To estimate how much electricity your gaming PC uses, measure or estimate its average power draw in watts for each mode—gaming, idle, and sleep—then multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh). Multiply the total kWh by the electricity rate on your bill to estimate cost. For the most reliable figure, measure the whole setup at the wall during your usual routine.

What determines a gaming PC’s electricity use?

Power draw depends on the PC’s components, settings, workload, and operating mode. A demanding game can draw substantially more than a desktop sitting idle; sleep or shutdown uses less. Your monitor and peripherals add to the total if you are estimating the complete gaming setup rather than the tower alone.

Do not use the wattage printed on the power supply (PSU) as the PC’s continuous consumption. That figure is the PSU’s capacity rating, not a measurement of what the system draws from the outlet. A 2015 study by Nathaniel Mills and Evan Mills found peak power for its tested complete systems was about 50% below nameplate estimates, illustrating why specifications are not a substitute for measurement—not providing a universal adjustment factor. The study and the calculator guide discuss this distinction.

Energy (kWh) = average power (watts) × hours ÷ 1,000

Then calculate cost with:

Cost = energy (kWh) × electricity rate per kWh

Use the rate and billing period that apply to you; electricity prices vary by location and tariff. For a monthly estimate, a 30-day approximation is: (watts × hours per day × 30 × rate per kWh) ÷ 1,000. This is a simplified version of the same energy calculation, not a guarantee that every month has 30 days. Calculator Collection’s cost guide uses this monthly framing.

Worked example: gaming plus idle time

Suppose the tower averages 400 W while gaming for 3 hours a day and 80 W while idle for another 5 hours a day. Daily energy is (400 × 3 + 80 × 5) ÷ 1,000 = 1.6 kWh. At an assumed rate of $0.20 per kWh, that is $0.32 per day, or about $9.60 over a 30-day month. These are example inputs, not a typical-PC claim; substitute your measured power and local rate.

How to measure your actual gaming PC use

  1. Decide what you are measuring: the tower by itself, or the entire setup including display and peripherals. Plug only the devices you want counted into the meter.
  2. Connect a plug-in electricity meter between the outlet and the PC or setup. A Kill A Watt meter is one cited example; it is optional, not required. The guide’s measurement section describes this approach.
  3. Use the computer as you normally do. For a gaming reading, play representative games with your usual settings; record idle and sleep/off use separately if those hours matter to your estimate.
  4. Record accumulated kWh over a representative session or several days, along with the elapsed hours and operating modes.
  5. For each mode, calculate average watts as accumulated kWh × 1,000 ÷ hours. Multiply that mode’s average watts by the hours you expect to spend in it, divide by 1,000, and add the mode totals.
  6. Multiply the resulting kWh by your applicable electricity rate to estimate the cost.

CPU or GPU monitoring software can help compare component activity, but readings for those components may leave out other system draw and power-supply conversion losses. A meter at the wall measures the connected load more directly. If the monitor or peripherals are not plugged into the meter, their use is not included in its result. Calculator Collection’s measurement guidance notes these limitations.

How much electricity does a gaming PC use?

There is no established recent standardized average in the cited material for current gaming PCs, so a single wattage would be misleading. A historical estimate helps show the scale but should not be treated as a 2026 benchmark: Mills and Mills’ paper, published online in 2015 and in Energy Efficiency in 2016, modeled a typical 2014-era gaming computer with one display at about 1,394 kWh per year, assuming an average of 4.4 hours per day in gaming mode. The authors wrote: “The results indicate unit energy consumption of 1394 kWh/year (based on an average of 4.4 h/day in gaming mode), including the display.” Their base case recorded a 512 W peak during active gaming and a 212 W mode-weighted average while on. These are findings for that study’s measurements and assumptions, not universal figures for today’s machines. Read the paper.

A June 2026 RunWatts article illustrates how estimates change with assumed setup draw and electricity price: it uses 350 W for a mid-range setup and 500 W for a high-end setup, applying an April 2026 U.S. residential average rate of 18.05¢/kWh. Those are editorial examples, not a standardized survey or a default for your PC. See the dated illustration.

How to compare two electricity estimates fairly

  • Compare wall power measured during the same workload, rather than PSU capacity or component specifications.
  • Use the same number of gaming, idle, and sleep hours for each estimate.
  • Check whether the monitor and peripherals are included in both totals.
  • Apply the same local electricity rate and tariff period.
  • Keep measured readings separate from calculator examples and modeled historical estimates.
