To estimate how many homes a power plant can supply, divide its annual net electricity generation by the annual electricity use of one household. If you know only the plant’s rated capacity, first estimate its annual generation using an explicit capacity-factor assumption. The result is an annual energy equivalent—not a count of homes guaranteed continuous power.
Use annual electricity, not capacity alone
Plant capacity is measured in megawatts (MW), a measure of power at a point in time. Generation is measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh), which measure energy produced over time. A plant’s MW rating therefore cannot be divided directly by household electricity use; you need annual generation or an estimate of it.
For a plant’s actual annual output, use net generation: the electricity produced after subtracting electricity the plant uses to run its equipment. To estimate homes equivalent to electricity delivered to consumers, account for transmission and distribution losses too.

Equivalent homes = annual net generation (kWh) × (1 − delivery-loss fraction) ÷ annual household electricity use (kWh per home)
If the generation figure is already measured at the point relevant to your comparison, do not subtract delivery losses again. If you lack a suitable loss figure, report the result as an estimate before delivery losses rather than silently assuming none.

For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s calculator uses 10,260 kWh per American household per year, based on 2023 data attributed to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Dividing a plant’s annual net kWh by that benchmark gives a U.S. annual household-equivalent figure before any additional delivery-loss adjustment. EPA’s calculator methodology explains the benchmark and calculation.

Estimated annual generation (kWh) = capacity (MW) × 1,000 × hours in the period × capacity factor
For a non-leap year, use 8,760 hours. In a leap year, use 8,784 hours if you need the period’s exact maximum. The capacity factor is the plant’s actual output divided by the maximum it could have produced over the same period. Unless you have a plant-specific value, it must be stated as an assumption; a generic factor is not a guarantee for a particular plant.

Worked example: a 100 MW plant at an assumed 50%
- Maximum possible output in a non-leap year: 100 MW × 8,760 hours = 876,000 MWh.
- Estimated output at an illustrative 50% capacity factor: 876,000 MWh × 0.50 = 438,000 MWh.
- Convert to kilowatt-hours: 438,000 MWh × 1,000 = 438,000,000 kWh.
- Divide by EPA’s U.S. household benchmark: 438,000,000 ÷ 10,260 ≈ 42,690 equivalent U.S. households, before delivery losses.
The 50% capacity factor is an example assumption, not a reported operating figure for a real plant. EIA illustrates the capacity-to-energy conversion with a 100 MW generator operating at capacity for 24 hours: it would produce 2,400 MWh. Actual plants generally do not operate at full capacity at every moment. See EIA’s explanation of how much electricity a power plant generates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a household benchmark that fits the comparison
Household electricity use varies by geography and year, so use a local benchmark that matches the question. The EPA’s 10,260 kWh figure is for an average American household using 2023 data; it should not be treated as a universal household figure.

For an example outside the United States, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero methodology estimates equivalent homes using median annual household consumption for the relevant region. Its method applies to England, Scotland and Wales; its benchmarks should not be substituted for U.S. or other-country values. The methodology also incorporates standardised load factors and system losses in its renewable-generation estimates. Read the UK government methodology note.
Interpret “homes powered” as an annual equivalence
An equivalent-homes figure compares total annual electricity with annual household consumption. It does not mean the plant directly serves that number of identifiable homes, runs continuously, or can meet their peak demand. Electricity moves through an interconnected grid, and annual totals do not show whether generation is available at the same times households need it.
Actual plant output can vary with fuel costs, outages, operating conditions, weather, water availability and grid instructions. For renewable generation, curtailment and seasonal output can also affect what is produced or delivered. A capacity-based estimate compresses those operating realities into its capacity-factor assumption; actual annual net generation is preferable whenever it is available.
Keep comparisons consistent
When estimating or comparing two plants, align the period and assumptions rather than comparing unlike figures. In particular, check:

EIA defines net generation as gross electricity generation minus the electricity used to operate the power plant. For further definitions of capacity, generation, net generation and capacity factor, see EIA’s comparison of electric generation capacity and electricity generation.
