To estimate Claude Haiku API cost, identify the exact model, multiply input and output tokens by their respective per-million-token rates, and add the results. For Claude Haiku 4.5, Anthropic’s cited base rates are $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Caching, batch processing, and tools can change the total, so treat this as a token-cost estimate—not a guaranteed invoice.

Identify the exact Haiku model first

“Claude Haiku” alone is not enough to choose a rate: pricing differs by generation, and model availability changes. Anthropic’s migration documentation lists Haiku 4.5 at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Anthropic’s model-status documentation lists Haiku 4.5 as active and Haiku 3 and Haiku 3.5 as retired. Check the model name in your request or usage record, then confirm current rates and availability on Anthropic’s model migration guide and model status documentation.

Calculate standard input and output costs

For an uncached request using standard token rates, calculate input and output separately. Divide each token count by 1,000,000, multiply by that token type’s per-million rate, and add the two costs.

  • Input cost: input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate per million tokens
  • Output cost: output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate per million tokens
  • Estimated token cost: input cost + output cost

Example: Haiku 4.5

Suppose a request uses 100,000 input tokens and produces 20,000 output tokens. At the cited Haiku 4.5 base rates:

  • Input: 100,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $1 = $0.10
  • Output: 20,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $5 = $0.10
  • Estimated total: $0.20

This arithmetic applies the cited base rates; it is not a tested request or a prediction of a particular account’s bill.

Use the usage categories that match the request

For a completed request, use the actual usage figures returned for it when available. Anthropic’s pricing documentation distinguishes input tokens, output tokens, cache-creation input tokens, and cache-read input tokens. Do not simply add cached tokens to standard input and price the whole amount at the uncached input rate; account for each category under its applicable current rate. See Anthropic’s pricing documentation for usage categories and pricing guidance.

Before sending a request, token totals are estimates unless you count the exact request for the exact model using Anthropic’s supported workflow. A rough word or character conversion is not an exact token count.

Adjust for caching, batch requests, and tools

  • Prompt caching: Include cache-creation and cache-read usage separately and apply the current model-specific rates. The cited information does not establish reliable current Haiku 4.5 prices for each cache duration, so verify the live pricing page rather than borrowing a rate from an older model row.
  • Batch processing: Check the current batch rate for the exact model and request type. Do not assume that a batch discount or a rate shown for an earlier Haiku generation applies to Haiku 4.5.
  • Tools: Tool definitions and tool-use content can add tokens. Server-side tools may also have separate usage-based charges.
  • Web search: Anthropic says web search is charged in addition to token usage, and search results become input tokens. Confirm the current fee on Anthropic’s web search tool documentation.

Reconcile the estimate with billing

The formula estimates token-related API costs. Reconcile it against the request’s usage data and your account’s billing records. Account-specific negotiated terms, taxes, and separately billed features can affect the final amount.
