Estimate a Bitcoin miner’s electricity cost from its actual wall power, operating hours, and the all-in electricity rate you pay. Then compare expected mining proceeds with electricity, pool fees, and other operating costs. For investment payback, also include the hardware and installation costs. The result is an estimate—not guaranteed income—and can change as network conditions, Bitcoin’s price, and your operating costs change.
Calculate the miner’s electricity use and bill
Use power measured at the wall where possible: it captures the miner’s actual draw rather than relying only on a device specification. If you use separate cooling or ventilation, include that electricity too. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) notes that mining facilities consume electricity both to run machines and to cool equipment (EIA’s analysis of cryptocurrency mining electricity use).
- Find the all-in rate that applies to your usage. Use the marginal price per kilowatt-hour (kWh), including applicable delivery charges and taxes. Account separately for demand charges or time-of-use rates if they affect your bill. Your utility bill or tariff gives the relevant figures; there is no universal rate to use.
- Convert power to kilowatts. Divide watts by 1,000. For example, a miner drawing 3,000 watts uses 3 kW.
- Calculate energy use. For continuous operation, kWh per day = power in kW × 24. At 3 kW, that is 72 kWh per day. For partial operation, multiply by actual hours running instead of 24.
- Calculate the electricity cost. Daily cost = daily kWh × your all-in rate per kWh. Multiply the daily result by the number of operating days for a longer period, adjusting for downtime or changing rates.
The 3 kW example illustrates the arithmetic only; it does not assume or recommend a particular electricity price or mining result. If your site has cooling, ventilation, or other dedicated loads, include their consumption in the same calculation.
Estimate expected mining proceeds
Hashrate tells you how quickly a miner performs hashing work, but it does not by itself determine earnings. Expected proceeds depend on the miner’s share of total network work, the expected block subsidy and transaction fees, and—if you mine through a pool—the pool’s payout method and fees. Bitcoin developer documentation explains how pools use submitted shares and distribute rewards under their payout rules (Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining).

To estimate a miner’s share, compare its hashrate with the network hashrate over the same time period. A larger share of network work can mean a larger expected contribution, but actual results vary: block discovery and fees fluctuate, and pool payout rules affect how proceeds reach participants. Use dated, current inputs for any estimate that converts expected BTC into fiat currency; the BTC price and network conditions can change.

Expected fiat proceeds − electricity − pool fees − other recurring operating costs
Include any additional recurring costs that apply to your setup, such as cooling or site charges not already captured in the electricity rate. Do not count an expense twice: if a separate load is already included in your measured power, it is already reflected in the electricity calculation.

Operating profit is not the same as investment payback. To estimate whether the initial outlay might be recovered, account for the delivered hardware cost, shipping, installation, and other capital expenses as well. A mining calculator’s hardware-cost input should not be confused with its operating-cost estimate (NiceHash profitability calculator).
Build scenarios instead of trusting one forecast
Mining profitability is sensitive to assumptions. Recalculate with different values for the electricity rate, uptime, miner efficiency, pool fee, BTC price, network hashrate or difficulty, and transaction fees. Keep the assumptions dated and use a consistent forecast period so that you are comparing like with like.

Network estimates can also smooth short-term variation. The Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) uses a seven-day moving average to reduce short-term hashrate volatility; its monthly consumption estimates assume constant power use over 24 hours at the daily best-guess estimate (Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index). Those are model choices for industry estimates, not a substitute for your measured uptime or electricity bill.

The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 Digital Mining Industry Report estimates industry-wide SHA-256 ASIC efficiency at 28.2 joules per terahash (J/TH), as of June 2024, and reports a 24% year-over-year improvement. It also reports median industry electricity costs of $45/MWh and median all-in costs of $55.5/MWh (Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, 2025; report and methodology). These are industry medians, not household tariffs, a quote for a particular mining site, or universal break-even thresholds. Convert units carefully when comparing them with a retail bill: 1 MWh equals 1,000 kWh.

The EIA’s February 1, 2024 analysis estimated that cryptocurrency mining used 0.6%–2.3% of U.S. electricity consumption. That was a preliminary national estimate for cryptocurrency mining, not a current Bitcoin-only figure. The EIA later stated it discontinued its emergency collection of survey data for Form EIA-862 (EIA analysis and data-collection status). This national statistic describes scale; it does not tell an individual miner what electricity costs or whether mining is profitable.
What to compare when choosing between miners
For a meaningful estimate, use comparable operating assumptions for each device. Consider:
- Hashrate and rated versus measured wall power
- Efficiency in joules per terahash (J/TH), calculated as watts divided by terahashes per second
- Delivered purchase price, electrical requirements, and installation needs
- Expected uptime, cooling and ventilation requirements, and noise implications
- Warranty and support, plus the estimated cost per unit of mining output under your assumptions
A more efficient device uses less energy for a given amount of hashing work, but efficiency alone cannot establish profitability. The actual electricity rate, purchase cost, network competition, and proceeds assumptions still matter. No current ASIC models or listings are established by the figures above, so verify device specifications and delivered costs before using them in a comparison.
