Many freedivers learn the Frenzel maneuver, which uses the tongue and throat to move a small amount of air toward the Eustachian tubes instead of relying on forceful pressure from the lungs. If an ear will not clear, stop descending, rise a little, and try gently once more. If it still will not clear, end the dive—never push through pain or a blockage.
Why your ears need to equalize
As you descend, the surrounding water pressure rises. Equalization helps balance pressure in the middle ear; air reaches it through the Eustachian tubes. If the pressure difference builds and a tube does not open, you may feel discomfort or pain, and continuing to descend can cause injury. Divers Alert Network (DAN) describes this pressure-related risk in its How to Equalize and Ears & Diving guidance, accessed October 7, 2026.
Start before pressure becomes uncomfortable and repeat as needed during descent. DAN’s advice to equalize early and frequently is written for scuba divers; the timing principle is useful for freediving, but scuba procedures should not be transferred wholesale to a breath-hold dive. There is no single depth at which every freediver should expect a maneuver to work: anatomy, orientation, skill, and conditions differ.
How to try the Frenzel maneuver
Frenzel is commonly taught to freedivers because it uses tongue and throat control rather than depending on a forceful push from the lungs. DAN describes closing the nostrils and throat and making a K-like movement; PADI notes that freedivers often use this method.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Practice on land first. Gently close your nostrils with your fingers. Check that you can make a small, controlled movement without straining or blowing hard.
- Close the back of your throat. Keep the throat closed so the movement does not turn into a forceful exhalation from the chest.
- Use a small tongue movement. Make a K-like motion to move air toward the openings of the Eustachian tubes. The aim is controlled movement, not a hard push or a loud pop.
- Check that it feels easy. If you cannot tell whether you are using tongue-and-throat control or forceful lung pressure, do not try to learn the distinction underwater. Ask a qualified freediving instructor to assess your technique.
The Freediving Association of India’s equalization guide describes staged dry practice, including an optional nose clip for hands-free practice. A nose clip is only a practice aid; it does not clear a blocked ear or make it safe to continue a dive. The guide’s specific practice timelines and depth claims should not be treated as universal standards.
What to do when an ear will not clear underwater
- Stop descending. Do not keep going down while waiting for a blocked ear to clear.
- Rise a little. Ascending reduces the pressure difference that has built during descent.
- Try gently again. Avoid repeated rapid attempts, forceful blowing, or straining.
- End the dive if it remains blocked. Return to the surface rather than trying to get past the blockage. DAN warns that failed equalization and forceful Valsalva attempts can cause injury; PADI’s freediver guidance likewise advises returning to the surface if the ears do not equalize easily.
Do not treat an ear “pop” as proof that continuing is safe. Comfort and the ability to equalize without strain matter; if equalization is not working reliably, stop the dive.

How common equalization methods differ
Different methods use different movements. Being able to produce a pop does not establish that a method is appropriate for you, and the sources do not support ranking these methods by a guaranteed depth limit.
| Method | Basic action | What it relies on |
|---|---|---|
| Frenzel | Close the nostrils and throat, then use a small tongue movement, often cued by a K sound. | Tongue and throat control rather than forceful lung pressure. |
| Valsalva | Make a gentle exhalation against closed nostrils. | Lung pressure. Do not force it; DAN warns that forceful Valsalva can contribute to injury. |
| Voluntary tubal opening | Use throat muscles and jaw movement to open the tubes. | Muscular control and coordination. |
| Toynbee | Close the nostrils and swallow. | Coordination of nose closure and swallowing. |
DAN catalogs these methods but does not say every method suits every freediver. If Frenzel is unreliable or you cannot distinguish it from a forceful Valsalva, get practical coaching from a qualified freediving instructor instead of trying to solve the problem by descending farther.

When to postpone a dive
Congestion, an upper respiratory infection, allergies, or existing ear symptoms can interfere with equalization. Postpone the dive if you cannot equalize comfortably on the surface, or if you have an unresolved ear injury or symptoms. PADI says relevant ear, sinus, respiratory, or heart conditions call for individual medical assessment.
Do not depend on decongestants or nasal sprays to make a dive possible. They do not establish that equalization will remain safe, and DAN’s ear guidance notes cautions, including possible rebound effects with nasal sprays. Ask a clinician about medication and fitness to dive rather than using a product to push through a problem.

Symptoms after a dive that need medical attention
Do not dismiss ear fullness, pain, tinnitus, hearing loss, dizziness, or vertigo after a dive as routine. Stop diving and seek medical advice, particularly if symptoms persist. Sudden hearing loss or severe vertigo warrants prompt medical assessment. DAN’s Ears & Diving injury guidance discusses potentially serious inner-ear injury and recommends prompt physician evaluation when one is suspected.
Where to get help with the technique
If you cannot perform Frenzel reliably, learn it with a qualified freediving instructor. PADI describes formal freediving training and advises returning to the surface when ears do not equalize easily. Freediving Manual’s guidance on Frenzel and hands-free equalization also cautions that online training cannot replace instruction with a qualified instructor. A lesson can help distinguish a controlled tongue-and-throat movement from straining; it cannot make an unsuccessful equalization attempt underwater safe.
