To enable Wi-Fi airtime fairness, sign in to your router or access point, open its wireless advanced settings, turn on Airtime Fairness (or a similarly named control), then save or apply the change. The exact menu and availability depend on the model, hardware revision, and firmware, so check your device’s manual before following model-specific steps.

What airtime fairness changes

Wi-Fi airtime fairness manages how transmission time is shared among wireless clients. It is intended to limit how much airtime slower clients consume so faster clients can transfer more data. It does not give every device equal internet bandwidth, and enabling it is not a guarantee that every device or application will become faster. The precise policy can vary by vendor and implementation.

For example, NETGEAR’s RAX5 manual says the feature aims to prevent the slowest Wi-Fi clients from controlling network responsiveness. TP-Link describes its access-point feature as sacrificing some time on slower devices so faster devices can receive better service. These are vendor descriptions, not a universal performance guarantee.

Before you change the setting

  • Find the exact model number and hardware revision on the device label or in its administration interface.
  • Use that model’s official manual or support page to confirm the feature is supported and locate its menu. A path for one product family may not apply to another.
  • Identify whether you are configuring a router or a separate access point; their interfaces can differ.
  • Make a note of the setting’s current state so you can restore it if a device or application works worse afterward.

These are verified examples for specific products, not universal instructions. Labels and paths can differ with hardware revision and firmware.

NETGEAR RAX5 router

  1. Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
  2. Go to ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings.
  3. Select Enable AIRTIME FAIRNESS, then click Apply.

The RAX5 manual says the option is enabled by default for the configuration it describes. If you administer the router over Wi-Fi, applying a change may disconnect your device on some variants; reconnect if necessary. See the NETGEAR RAX5 User Manual.

NETGEAR access points covered by NETGEAR’s support article

  1. Connect to the access point on the same subnet or through Ethernet.
  2. Open the access point’s IP address in a browser and sign in.
  3. Go to Management > Wireless > Advanced.
  4. Select Air Time Fairness, choose Enable, then click Apply.

NETGEAR’s article lists the WAC540 and certain WAX access points; check the article and your model’s current support page to confirm coverage. It says this setting cannot be activated through Insight, even when the access point remains in Insight mode. See NETGEAR’s access point instructions.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

TP-Link Archer C4000 router

  1. Open Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings.
  2. Select the band you want to configure: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz-1, or 5 GHz-2.
  3. Check Enable Airtime Fairness, then click Save.

The Archer C4000 guide describes this as a tradeoff: slower devices may receive less network time so faster devices can get better service. See the TP-Link Archer C4000 User Guide.

ASUS routers and TP-Link EAP/CAP access points

ASUS includes Airtime Fairness among its professional wireless settings, but its support page does not give one path for every model. TP-Link says supported EAP/CAP products expose the feature in Wireless Advanced settings, with support dependent on hardware version. In both cases, check the exact model’s manual or support page for its menu path and availability: ASUS Professional Wireless settings and TP-Link EAP/CAP Airtime Fairness FAQ.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Check whether the change helps your network

After saving, use the devices and applications that matter in your home and watch for changes in responsiveness, transfer performance, or connectivity. Benefits depend on the mix of clients and the router’s implementation; there is no universal result established for every network.

TP-Link’s FAQ, updated July 23, 2024, reports an example test in which an 802.11g client measured 28.075 Mbps and an 802.11n client 18.521 Mbps with airtime fairness disabled; with it enabled, the reported results were 12.214 Mbps and 116.538 Mbps respectively, while aggregate throughput rose from 46 Mbps to 128 Mbps. These are TP-Link’s vendor-reported example results, not an independent test or a prediction for a household network.

If the option is missing or causes a problem

The setting is not listed

Do not assume the router is broken. Availability depends on model and firmware. Confirm the exact model and hardware revision, then consult its official support page or manual; avoid borrowing instructions from a different model family. For example, ASUS warns that features can vary by model and firmware, while TP-Link’s EAP/CAP support is hardware-version specific.

A device disconnects or performs worse

  1. Return to the same wireless settings page.
  2. Disable Airtime Fairness and save or apply the change.
  3. Reconnect affected devices if needed, then check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for your exact model.

Do not assume a particular type of smart-home or legacy device is incompatible without model-specific evidence. Airtime fairness is also distinct from WMM QoS, MU-MIMO, and OFDMA; ASUS documents these as separate wireless controls.
