To enable virtualization in Windows 11, first check whether your PC already has it enabled; many Windows devices do. If it is off, use Windows Recovery to enter UEFI or BIOS and follow your PC maker’s instructions to enable processor virtualization. If your intended use requires it, enable Virtual Machine Platform separately in Windows.
Check before changing settings
Many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled, so you may not need to change anything. Check the status in the app or device you want to use. If you need to change the firmware setting, identify your PC’s manufacturer and exact model so you can follow its instructions.
Enable processor virtualization in UEFI or BIOS
Windows 11 can restart into your computer’s firmware settings. The interface may be called UEFI or BIOS. The setting’s name and location vary by manufacturer, model, and processor platform, so there is no universal menu path.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- In the Windows Recovery Environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Settings > Restart. Some devices may use different wording.
- In firmware setup, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to enable processor virtualization.
- Save the change and restart if the firmware prompts you to do so.
Consult the manufacturer’s support documentation for your exact PC model. Change only the setting you need; other firmware changes can prevent Windows from starting or being accessed.

Enable Virtual Machine Platform in Windows
Virtual Machine Platform is a Windows feature separate from processor virtualization in firmware. Enable it only if your intended use requires it. Microsoft notes that this step may apply to PCs upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
- Select Start and search for Windows features.
- Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
- Select Virtual Machine Platform.
- Select OK and restart Windows if prompted.
Virtualization and other firmware features
| Setting | What to know |
|---|---|
| Processor virtualization | A firmware setting whose name and location depend on the PC maker, model, and processor platform. |
| Virtual Machine Platform | A separate optional Windows feature; enable it when your intended use requires it. |
| Secure Boot and TPM | Separate security and system-requirement features. Do not change them just to enable processor virtualization. |
FAQ
