Windows 11 and Windows 10 cannot use hardware-assisted virtual machines until virtualization is enabled in your computer’s UEFI/BIOS. The setting is usually called Intel Virtualization Technology, Intel(VMX) Virtualization Technology, or SVM Mode on AMD systems.
On ASUS motherboards, the change is normally made under Advanced → CPU Configuration. The exact wording and location can differ by model, firmware version, laptop, and processor.
Before you start
- Save your work and close Windows. You will restart the computer.
- Have your BitLocker recovery key available if device encryption is enabled. Firmware changes can occasionally trigger a recovery-key prompt.
- Do not change unrelated BIOS settings while looking for virtualization.
Enabling virtualization in firmware does not install Hyper-V, WSL, VMware, VirtualBox, or another virtual-machine application. It only exposes the processor’s virtualization capability to Windows and compatible software.
Enable virtualization on an ASUS motherboard
- Restart the PC. As soon as it begins powering on, repeatedly press Delete. On some ASUS systems, F2 also opens BIOS.
- If BIOS opens in EZ Mode, press F7 to switch to Advanced Mode. Some ROG motherboards open directly in Advanced Mode.
- Open Advanced → CPU Configuration.
- Find the setting for your processor:
Processor BIOS setting Value Intel Intel(VMX) Virtualization Technology Enabled AMD SVM Mode Enabled - Select the setting, press Enter, choose Enabled, and press Enter.
- Press F10. Confirm with OK. The computer saves the change and reboots.
The names and paths above are ASUS’s documented motherboard paths, but they are not guaranteed on every ASUS product. If the option is elsewhere, search the BIOS screens for virtualization, VMX, or SVM, and check the support page for the exact model.

Enable virtualization on an ASUS laptop
ASUS laptops can use a different BIOS layout from ASUS desktop motherboards. Intel models may call the option Intel Virtualization Technology; AMD models commonly use SVM Mode. The menu path depends on the laptop model and firmware version.
- Shut down or restart the laptop.
- Press F2 repeatedly during startup to enter BIOS. If that does not work, consult the laptop’s manual for its BIOS key.
- Switch to Advanced Mode if the firmware provides that option.
- Locate Intel Virtualization Technology on an Intel model or SVM Mode on an AMD model.
- Set it to Enabled, then use F10 to save and restart.
Check whether virtualization is enabled in Windows
You can verify the result without entering BIOS again:
- Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Performance, then CPU.
- Look for Virtualization in the CPU details. It should say Enabled.
If Task Manager still reports Disabled, the firmware setting was not saved, the wrong setting was changed, or the system has a model-specific BIOS implementation. Re-enter BIOS and check the setting again.

Intel VT-x, VMX, and VT-d are not the same setting
On ASUS Intel systems, the ordinary CPU virtualization switch is named Intel(VMX) Virtualization Technology. VMX is Intel’s terminology for the processor virtualization extensions commonly referred to as VT-x.

It can be useful for device assignment and other advanced workloads, but enabling VT-d is not a substitute for enabling the main VMX/VT-x setting. If a virtual-machine application asks for hardware virtualization, look for the VMX or Intel Virtualization Technology option first.
Do you need to enable Hyper-V?
Only enable Hyper-V if the software or workflow you intend to use requires it. BIOS virtualization and the Windows Hyper-V feature are separate:

To install Hyper-V where your Windows edition supports it, open Control Panel → Uninstall a program → Turn Windows feature on or off, select Hyper-V, choose OK, and restart when prompted. This step is not required merely to turn on Intel VT-x or AMD SVM, and Windows edition support varies.
What to do if the virtualization option is missing
- Confirm the processor. An Intel system generally uses a VMX or Intel Virtualization Technology label; an AMD system generally uses SVM Mode.
- Confirm the exact computer or motherboard model. ASUS BIOS options differ according to the supported hardware.
- Check the complete Advanced menu. The option may not be under CPU Configuration on a particular laptop or firmware release.
- Update BIOS only with the model’s official instructions. Do not flash firmware intended for a similar-looking model.
- Check whether virtualization is already enabled. Task Manager may show Enabled even if you cannot find the setting.
- Check for a business or managed-device restriction. Some administrator-controlled systems hide or lock firmware settings.
If the option genuinely does not exist, the processor, platform, or firmware may not support exposing it. Do not assume that every ASUS BIOS has the same menu structure.

Common mistakes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows still says virtualization is disabled | The BIOS change was not saved or the wrong option was changed | Return to BIOS, verify VMX or SVM is Enabled, then press F10 and confirm. |
| You enabled VT-d but the app still reports no virtualization | VT-d is not the primary CPU virtualization switch | Enable Intel(VMX) Virtualization Technology instead. |
| You cannot enter BIOS | The startup window is short, or Fast Startup interferes | Use Windows recovery options: Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings → Restart, if available. |
| Hyper-V installation failed | The Windows edition or feature requirements are not met | Check the edition and Windows optional-feature requirements. BIOS virtualization alone does not install Hyper-V. |
FAQ
What key opens BIOS on an ASUS computer?
Press Delete repeatedly while the computer starts. F2 also works on some ASUS systems. If Windows starts too quickly, use Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings, when that option is available.

What is the AMD BIOS virtualization setting called?
It is usually called SVM Mode. On documented ASUS motherboard paths, it is under Advanced → CPU Configuration → SVM Mode.
What is the Intel BIOS virtualization setting called?
ASUS may label it Intel(VMX) Virtualization Technology on motherboards or Intel Virtualization Technology on some notebooks. Set it to Enabled.
Is virtualization enabled by default on ASUS motherboards?
ASUS states that virtualization is enabled by default on the Intel motherboards covered by its January 2024 guidance. That is not a guarantee for every ASUS motherboard, notebook, workstation, server, or BIOS version, so verify it in Task Manager.

Will enabling BIOS virtualization turn on Hyper-V?
No. It enables the processor feature only. Hyper-V must be installed separately through Windows optional features, and it is not required for the BIOS change itself.
Can I enable virtualization from Command Prompt?
Not for the ASUS firmware setting described here. ASUS’s procedure uses BIOS navigation, F10, and confirmation with OK; no Command Prompt, PowerShell, DISM, or bcdedit command is required.
The Bottom Line
On an ASUS system, enter BIOS with Delete or F2, switch to Advanced Mode if necessary, and enable Intel(VMX) Virtualization Technology for Intel or SVM Mode for AMD. Press F10, confirm OK, then verify Virtualization: Enabled in Task Manager. Because ASUS changes menu names and locations between models and firmware versions, use the exact model’s manual when the documented path is not present.
