You can send ordinary messages by satellite on supported iPhones, but the Android instructions covered here are for Pixel emergency texting—not routine messages to friends and family. On either device, eligibility depends on the model and region, and you need an unobstructed view of the sky to connect.
Can you text without cell service?
Yes, in specific circumstances. Apple’s Messages via satellite lets eligible iPhones send limited messages to friends and family when cellular and Wi-Fi service are unavailable. Google’s documented Pixel feature, Satellite SOS, connects eligible phones to emergency services; it is not general Android-to-Android or Android-to-iPhone texting.
These are different services with different purposes. Apple says Messages via satellite should not be used in emergencies. If you need emergency help, use Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone or Satellite SOS on a supported Pixel.

Apple supports Messages via satellite on iPhone 14 or later, all models, with an active SIM. The minimum software and listed availability vary by region:

Apple says satellite connectivity is subject to regulatory approvals in other regions. It is not offered on iPhone models purchased in Armenia, Belarus, mainland China, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Models purchased in Hong Kong and Macao require iPhone 16e or later. Check Apple’s current Messages via satellite requirements and availability for your location and model.
- Before going off-grid, confirm your iPhone model, iOS version, and active SIM. Turn on iMessage while you still have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage; Apple requires this in advance for iMessage via satellite.
- To practice, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Satellite Connection Demo.
- When you are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, open Messages and tap Use Messages via Satellite when prompted.
- Follow the onscreen directions to position your iPhone and connect. Stay outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon; Apple says you can hold the phone naturally rather than raising it overhead.
- Compose and send the message. Follow the connection-status prompts until it sends.
What iPhone satellite Messages can send
Messages via satellite supports text, emoji, and Tapbacks. It does not support photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, or group messages. Apple says sending may take over a minute under light or medium foliage, or a few minutes in the sending flow; obstructions such as heavy foliage can prevent a connection. These are Apple’s operational guidance, not measured average delivery times.

iMessage messages remain end-to-end encrypted between devices in transit. If iMessage is unavailable, SMS may be used, but satellite SMS depends on your network provider and provider fees may apply. See Apple’s Messages via satellite guidance for current details.

iPhone: Emergency SOS via satellite
When an emergency call cannot connect because cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, follow the satellite emergency option shown on your iPhone and its onscreen instructions. This is separate from Messages via satellite and is the appropriate Apple feature for contacting emergency services. You need a clear view of the sky and horizon. Apple recommends setting up Medical ID and emergency contacts and trying the Emergency SOS demo before a remote trip. See Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite instructions.

Pixel: Satellite SOS
Google documents Satellite SOS for Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Its stated availability is the United States, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. The feature is for contacting emergency services, not ordinary texting with friends and family. Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS instructions provide current eligibility details.
- Set Google Messages as the default messaging app. Changing the default disables Satellite SOS.
- If you cannot connect to a mobile or Wi-Fi network during an emergency, dial the local emergency number.
- Choose Satellite SOS, then tap Use Satellite SOS and Start.
- Complete the emergency questionnaire, choose whether to notify your emergency contacts, and follow the positioning prompts.
- Stay outside with a clear view of the sky so you can receive replies. Google says emergency providers should reply by text within a few minutes, but connection and response times vary with location, site conditions, and other factors.
You can preview the process at Settings > Safety and emergency > Satellite SOS. Google’s instructions establish support for the specified Pixel models and region; they do not establish general satellite texting on other Android phones.

What affects a satellite connection?
- Sky visibility: Buildings, terrain, and foliage can obstruct the connection. Follow the phone’s positioning prompts and remain outdoors.
- Time to send or receive: Satellite messages can take longer than ordinary texts. Apple’s and Google’s timing guidance is not a comparative speed test.
- Eligibility: Check the exact model, software, country, and—where SMS is involved—carrier support. Feature availability is not universal across iPhone models, Android manufacturers, or regions.
- Preparation: Enable iMessage before leaving coverage for Apple’s iMessage satellite use, and keep Google Messages as the default app for Pixel Satellite SOS.
