To check immediately, use the manual update option in the same settings area; to confirm what is installed, check Console Information. System updates do not necessarily add graphics features, so verify changes in Sony’s update notes.
Turn on automatic PS5 system updates
- On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Turn on Download Update Files Automatically.
- Turn on Install Update Files Automatically.
- If you want updates to run while the console is idle, enable the option to stay connected to the internet in rest mode under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, and leave the console in rest mode. Sony says automatic system software updates run during rest mode when these conditions are met. See Sony’s PS5 system software update instructions.
Check for an update manually
To check now rather than wait for an automatic update, return to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software. Sony says “Update Available appears if a newer version is available.” Follow the on-screen prompts to install it. Sony’s update instructions cover the manual check as well.
Confirm the installed system software version
Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony indicates that Up to date appears when the latest version is installed. This is a separate check from looking for an update: use the update settings to check for an available download, and Console Information to verify the installed software status. Find out whether an update adds graphics features
Check the feature notes linked from Sony’s PS5 system software update page. Look for a dated release note that explicitly describes the feature; do not assume that an update includes a graphics change just because it updates system software. Sony’s live page is the place to verify the current release details, which can change over time.

Graphics options already documented by Sony include 1440p HDMI video output, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). They are not universal enhancements activated by an update alone: the display must support the relevant feature, and VRR also depends on the game. Sony’s PS5 features information provides the compatibility details.

When checking a display for one of these options, match the feature first, then confirm the display’s resolution, refresh rate, and HDMI support. A display upgrade is not required for system updates, and a compatible display does not mean every game uses every feature.

Use USB only if the normal update route fails
If the console cannot update over the internet, Sony documents a computer-and-USB method. Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, create a PS5/UPDATE folder, and save Sony’s official update file there as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Then follow Sony’s on-screen-safe-mode update instructions at the official system software support page. This is a fallback, not a requirement for ordinary automatic updates; use only Sony’s official file and procedure.
Do not interrupt installation: Sony warns, “Don’t turn off your console during the installation.” Repeated download failures have separate retry and USB troubleshooting guidance on Sony’s update support page. Reinstalling system software is a distinct recovery operation that deletes console data, so it is not a routine update step.

Stable updates and beta software are different
Sony’s beta program can provide early access to features, but it is separate from the stable update route and is limited to eligible, approved adult accounts. Beta enrollment uses a separate menu option, and Sony advises backing up before using beta software. Eligibility and availability can change; check Sony’s PS5 beta program information for current terms.
