To use Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) in Microsoft Edge on a personal Windows 11 device, open edge://settings/defaultBrowser, set Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) to Allow if the control is available, and restart Edge. Then visit the legacy site and select Settings and more (…) > Reload in Internet Explorer mode. On Edge 141 or later on a non-enterprise device, Microsoft also documents adding the site under Internet Explorer mode pages.
IE mode is an Edge compatibility feature for legacy sites; it is not the standalone Internet Explorer browser. On an organization-managed device, policy may disable or control these options, so contact your IT administrator if a setting is unavailable.
Before enabling IE mode
Use IE mode for a legacy website that requires Internet Explorer compatibility, not as the default for ordinary modern sites. Microsoft says Internet Explorer support ended on June 15, 2022; IE mode is the compatibility option available inside Edge.
How to enable Internet Explorer mode in Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Enter edge://settings/defaultBrowser in the address bar and press Enter.
- Under Internet Explorer compatibility, set Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) to Allow, if the control is shown.
- Restart Edge.
- Visit the legacy website, open Settings and more (…), and select Reload in Internet Explorer mode.
An IE mode indicator appears when the page is using IE mode. The command and available controls can vary by Edge version and device management.

Add a site in Edge 141 or later on a non-enterprise device
For Edge 141 or later on a device that is not enterprise-managed, Microsoft also documents a site-specific route:
- Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Default browser.
- Under Internet Explorer compatibility, find Internet Explorer mode pages.
- Add the site, then visit or reload it.
This site-list route is version- and device-specific; do not assume it is available on every Edge installation. A user-remembered site entry is distinct from an organization’s Enterprise Mode Site List.
Leave IE mode
To return to ordinary Edge mode for the current page, select Leave in the IE mode information bar if it appears. You can also close the IE-mode tab and open the address in a new Edge tab.

How to disable Internet Explorer mode
Stop using IE mode for the current page
- Select Leave in the IE mode information bar, if shown.
- Alternatively, close the IE-mode tab and open the address in a new Edge tab.
Turn off user-initiated IE-mode reloads
- Open edge://settings/defaultBrowser.
- Where available, set Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) to Don’t allow.
- Restart Edge.
On the Edge 141+ non-enterprise site-specific path, manage or remove the entry under Internet Explorer mode pages. Organization policy may control these settings or continue to place a site in IE mode.
Why “Reload in Internet Explorer mode” or the setting may be missing
The reload command is documented for users after IE-mode reloading is allowed, but its availability depends on the Edge version and organizational settings. On a managed device, the setting may be greyed out, and policy may prevent users from reloading unconfigured sites in IE mode.
If your work or school device does not show the setting or command, contact your IT administrator. Users cannot override mandatory organization policy through the personal-device steps in this guide.

Enterprise configuration through policy
Organizations can configure IE mode centrally with Microsoft Edge policies and an Enterprise Mode Site List. The InternetExplorerIntegrationReloadInIEModeAllowed policy controls whether users can reload sites that are not already in the organization’s site list. When policy disables that action, users should contact their administrator rather than editing the registry.
Microsoft’s Enterprise Mode Site List guidance is separate from the site-specific entries a user may manage in Edge settings. An organization-managed device may therefore behave differently from a personal device.

Use IE mode only for trusted legacy sites that need it. Keep use limited to the sites required, and follow your organization’s guidance on legacy applications.

Is Internet Explorer still available in Windows 11?
The standalone Internet Explorer browser is retired. Microsoft says support for Internet Explorer ended on June 15, 2022. IE mode is a compatibility feature inside Microsoft Edge.
Why can’t I find “Reload in Internet Explorer mode” in Edge?
The command depends on Edge version and settings. Check edge://settings/defaultBrowser and allow sites to be reloaded in IE mode if the control is available. On managed devices, organizational policy may hide or disable the option; contact IT.
Do I need to add a site before reloading it in IE mode?
Microsoft documents a reload command after enabling the reload-sites setting. It also documents adding a site under Internet Explorer mode pages for Edge 141 or later on non-enterprise devices. The site-specific route is not universal.

How do I leave IE mode?
Select Leave in the IE mode information bar if it appears, or close that tab and open the address in a new Edge tab.
Can I disable IE mode on a managed work or school computer?
Not necessarily. An organization’s Edge policy or Enterprise Mode Site List can control the available settings and whether a site uses IE mode. Ask your IT administrator for help.
How long does a manually remembered IE-mode site remain?
Microsoft Learn describes a 30-day default period for remembering an individual page when that local site-list feature is enabled. The duration can be managed by policy; this does not mean every enterprise site-list entry expires after 30 days.

On a personal Windows 11 device, open edge://settings/defaultBrowser, allow sites to be reloaded in IE mode if the control is available, restart Edge, then visit the legacy site and choose Settings and more (…) > Reload in Internet Explorer mode. Edge 141 or later on a non-enterprise device also has a documented site-specific path. If a setting is missing or disabled on a managed device, contact your IT administrator.
