To enable Hibernate in Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Control Panel’s power-button settings, unlock the settings if needed, and select Hibernate under Shutdown settings. To switch hibernation on or off from an administrator Command Prompt, use powercfg /hibernate on or powercfg /hibernate off. If Hibernate is missing, your PC may not support it.

Show Hibernate in the power menu

The Control Panel route works in both Windows 11 and Windows 10. In Windows 11, open Control Panel from taskbar Search; the Windows 10 Settings layout differs, but the power-button settings are also in Control Panel.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable. Approve the prompt if Windows asks for administrator permission.
  4. Under Shutdown settings, select the Hibernate checkbox if it appears.
  5. Select Save changes.

To use it, select Start > Power > Hibernate. You can also open the Win+X menu and choose Shut down or sign out > Hibernate. On the same power-button settings page, you can assign hibernation to closing the lid or pressing a power or sleep button, where those options are available.

Enable or disable hibernation with a command

Use an elevated Command Prompt: search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Then enter the command you need:

Goal Command
Enable hibernation powercfg /hibernate on
Disable hibernation powercfg /hibernate off

The switch can also be written /h. To check which sleep states your PC supports and see reasons a state may be unavailable, run powercfg /a in the elevated prompt. This reports the PC’s support; it cannot make unsupported hardware support hibernation.

What changes when you disable hibernation?

Hibernate saves the current session to a hibernation file so you can return to it later. Microsoft says it uses less power than Sleep, but takes longer to resume. It recommends Hibernate for longer periods away from a laptop or tablet when you will not be able to charge it. Sleep uses very little power and resumes faster, so it is more suitable for short absences. Microsoft’s comparison of shutdown, Sleep, and Hibernate covers these behaviors.

Turning hibernation off with powercfg /hibernate off removes the hibernation feature and its file. That also affects Fast Startup, which uses a hibernation file. Fast Startup is not the same as resuming a hibernated user session: it logs off the user session while saving Windows kernel state, creating a hybrid shutdown path.

Microsoft documents two hibernation-file types: a full file supports Hibernate, hybrid sleep, and Fast Startup; a reduced file supports Fast Startup only. If you want Fast Startup without the standard Hibernate option, do not use the off command casually. Advanced users can consult the Microsoft powercfg command documentation for powercfg /hibernate /type reduced. Microsoft notes that changing to reduced may require resetting a custom file size first with powercfg /hibernate /size 0. The hibernation file is on the Windows system drive, and its configured size varies; there is no universal size to expect.

State Power use and return What happens to the session Hibernation file
Sleep Uses very little power; resumes faster than Hibernate. Returns to the active session. Not identified as requiring a hibernation file in Microsoft’s comparison.
Hibernate Uses less power than Sleep; resumes more slowly. Saves the current session for later restoration. Uses the full hibernation-file type.
Full shutdown Shuts down Windows rather than keeping the PC in Sleep or Hibernate. Tears down the user session. Does not use Fast Startup’s hybrid transition.
Fast Startup A hybrid shutdown path, not a resume of the hibernated user session. Logs off the user session and saves kernel state. Uses a hibernation file; reduced files support Fast Startup only.

For the technical distinction between full and reduced hibernation files and Fast Startup, see Microsoft Learn’s description of system power states.

Why Hibernate may be missing

  • The PC may not support it. Hibernation is unavailable on some PCs; Microsoft gives devices with InstantGo as one example. A missing checkbox can therefore be a platform limitation rather than a missed setting.
  • The settings may still be locked. Return to the power-button settings and select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • The command prompt may not be elevated. Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator, then try the command again.
  • Check reported sleep-state support. Run powercfg /a in an elevated prompt and review the available states and any listed reasons a state is unavailable.

If a device does not work correctly after resuming, Microsoft advises disconnecting and reconnecting the affected peripheral or restarting the PC, and checking that the device drivers are current.

Windows 10 support status

These hibernation instructions apply to Windows 10 as well as Windows 11. However, standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; that does not by itself mean the power-setting steps have stopped working. See Microsoft’s Windows power-mode support page for the support notice.
