To turn a Windows capability on or off, use the control designed for that feature: search Start for Turn Windows features on or off for classic Windows components, or open Settings > System > Optional features for features managed there. Before changing anything, confirm the feature and your Windows version, check for prerequisites, and prepare a way to recover if the change causes trouble.
Find the right Windows feature control
Windows features are not all managed in one place. The appropriate control depends on the feature, Windows version and edition, device capability, and—in a work or school environment—organizational policy. Some settings may be unavailable on managed PCs.
- Classic Windows components: Open Start, search for Turn Windows features on or off, and open the matching result. This opens the Windows Features dialog, where components are represented by checkboxes.
- Optional features in Settings: Open Settings > System > Optional features. Use the add or remove controls shown for the feature you need.
- Feature-specific controls: Some capabilities have their own settings page. For example, Recall snapshot capture is controlled through its feature-specific privacy settings.
- Firmware prerequisites: Some Windows capabilities depend on a device setting in UEFI/BIOS. Virtual Machine Platform is one example; follow the device maker’s instructions if hardware virtualization needs to be enabled.
If you cannot find a control, check whether your Windows version and edition support the feature, whether the device has the required hardware, and whether an administrator manages the PC. Windows Media Player legacy features, for example, may be offered only in certain editions.
Prepare before making a change
First identify the outcome you want and note the feature’s current state. Change only the relevant control, rather than applying a batch of unexplained “debloat” changes. The fewer unrelated settings you alter, the easier it is to identify and undo a problem.

- Back up important files before higher-impact changes.
- If System Protection is available, open Start and search for Create a restore point. On the System Protection tab, configure protection if needed and create a restore point manually. A restore point is a safeguard, not a backup; it may not exist unless protection has been configured, and availability depends on disk space and system behavior.
- If drive encryption is enabled, locate and make sure you can access the BitLocker recovery key before changing settings that could lead to recovery. Some recovery routes require the key.
- For a last-resort recovery option, Microsoft recommends creating a recovery drive on a USB drive while the PC is working. It is preparation for recovery, not a requirement for ordinary feature toggles.
Turn a feature on or off
Use the Windows Features dialog
- Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- In the Windows Features dialog, select the checkbox for the component you want to enable, or clear its checkbox to disable it. Change only the component you intend to manage.
- Select OK and follow any prompts. Windows may need to apply changes or restart before they take effect.
Use Settings or the feature’s own page
For a feature listed under Settings > System > Optional features, use the add or remove control shown there and follow the prompts. For a feature with its own settings page, use that page rather than assuming its controls are in Windows Features. Read any notice about data deletion or other side effects before confirming.
Example: enable Virtual Machine Platform
Microsoft’s documented steps are to open the Windows Features dialog, select Virtual Machine Platform, choose OK, and restart if Windows prompts you. If the feature requires hardware virtualization and it is not enabled, consult the device maker’s instructions for the UEFI/BIOS change. Microsoft cautions: “Only change what you need to in the UEFI (or BIOS). Adjusting other settings might prevent you from accessing Windows.” (Microsoft Support: Enable Virtualization on Windows.)

Consider the consequences of security and privacy changes
Security controls protect different parts of a PC, so disabling one is not a general-purpose performance fix. Decide based on a specific need and understand what protection or data access could be affected.
- Memory Integrity: Windows Security provides information about this device security feature. Turning it off changes a security protection; do not treat that as a routine optimization.
- Secure Boot: This helps prevent malicious software from loading when the PC starts. Changing firmware settings can also affect startup, so avoid changing adjacent options.
- Device Encryption and BitLocker: These protect data on the drive. Keep the recovery key accessible because some recovery tools may request it.
- Recall: Microsoft says Recall can be removed through Turn Windows features on or off on supported devices. Removing Recall deletes previously saved snapshots, so consider that data consequence before proceeding.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10. Feature settings may still be present, but changing them does not restore those support services. (Microsoft Support: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.)

Undo a change or recover if Windows has trouble
If a feature toggle causes an issue, use the least disruptive recovery option that applies. If Windows still works, return to the same control and restore the previous setting; a restart may be needed. For broader system problems, System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, installed programs, and settings without affecting personal files. It can reverse recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings, so review the changes before confirming.
System Restore is available only when a suitable restore point exists. If Windows cannot start normally, use the applicable Windows recovery or troubleshooting options; some recovery methods may cause data loss. Encrypted devices may require the BitLocker recovery key to access Windows Recovery Environment tools. Microsoft recommends backing up important files before recovery actions and having the key available where encryption is enabled.
