Microsoft calls the feature Energy saver in Windows 11 version 24H2 and later; earlier Windows 11 releases and Windows 10 call it Battery saver. Use the steps for your Windows version to turn it on, configure automatic activation, or turn it off.
To check your Windows version, press Windows+R, type winver, and press Enter.
Enable or disable Energy saver in Windows 11 24H2 and later
In Windows 11 24H2 and newer versions, find Energy saver under Settings > System > Power & battery.
Turn Energy saver on automatically
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Expand Energy saver.
- Under Turn energy saver on when battery level is at, select the desired battery level.
Energy saver activates automatically when the battery reaches the selected level. Available controls may vary by Windows build and device.

Turn Energy saver on immediately
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Energy saver.
- Set Always use energy saver to On.
This keeps Energy saver enabled until the next time you plug in the PC.
Use Quick Settings
Select the Battery icon in the taskbar notification area, then select the Energy saver quick setting. Select the active setting again to turn it off.
Disable Energy saver
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver.
- Set Always use energy saver to Off.
If Energy saver still activates automatically, review Turn energy saver on when battery level is at. Microsoft documents choosing a battery level but does not specify a universal Never option for every build. If your version has a control to disable automatic activation, turn it off; otherwise, select the highest available threshold or use the taskbar toggle as needed.

Earlier Windows 11 releases use the name Battery saver.

Configure automatic Battery saver activation
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Power & battery.
- Expand or select Battery saver.
- Choose the battery level at which Battery saver should activate.
Some builds label the control Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below:. Clear or turn off that setting to prevent automatic activation.
Turn Battery saver on now
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Find Battery saver.
- Select Turn on now.
This temporary activation remains in effect until the next time you plug in the PC.
Turn Battery saver off
Select the Battery icon in the taskbar notification area and select the active Battery saver quick setting. Plugging in the PC also ends the temporary activation.
Enable or disable Battery saver in Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > System > Battery.
Set automatic activation
Under Battery saver, use Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below: and select the desired percentage. Turn off that setting to prevent automatic activation.

Turn it on until the next charge
Turn on Battery saver status until next charge. Windows keeps Battery saver active until the PC is connected to AC power.
Turn it off
Return to Start > Settings > System > Battery and turn off Battery saver status until next charge. Connecting the PC to AC power also ends the temporary session.
Windows 10 Battery saver can restrict automatic email and calendar synchronization, live-tile updates, and activity from apps that are not currently being used. This may save power, but notifications and background updates may be delayed.
What Energy saver and Battery saver change
These features reduce power use; they are separate from the selected Power mode. In Windows 11, Microsoft lists Power mode and Energy saver as separate settings. Depending on the Windows release and device, the saver can dim the screen and limit background processes while managing system processes and power usage. That may extend battery runtime, but background tasks and notifications may happen less promptly.

Can you control it with powercfg?
Microsoft documents enabling and disabling Battery saver or Energy saver through Settings or the taskbar quick setting, not with a direct powercfg.exe toggle. Microsoft documents powercfg for power schemes, sleep states, device power states, energy analysis, and battery reports.
To create an HTML report about battery usage, run:
powercfg /batteryreport
To choose the output location, use:
powercfg /batteryreport /output “C:\path\batteryreport.html”
Do not confuse these commands with the saver feature:
- powercfg /hibernate off disables hibernation. It does not disable Battery saver or Energy saver.
- powercfg /setactive … changes the active Windows power plan. It does not directly change the saver state.
If the setting is missing
- Run winver to check your Windows 11 release.
- Look under System > Power & battery on Windows 11. The Windows 10 path is System > Battery.
- Check the taskbar’s Battery icon for the corresponding Energy saver or Battery saver quick setting.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart the PC if Settings and Quick Settings show different states.
- Remember that Power mode is separate; changing it does not necessarily turn Energy saver or Battery saver on or off.
Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of support on October 14, 2025; specific LTSC releases follow their own lifecycles. Windows 11 Home and Pro are currently supported, but Windows 11 23H2 Home and Pro ended support on November 12, 2025, and 22H2 ended support on October 9, 2024. Is Battery saver called Energy saver in Windows 11?
Yes. Windows 11 version 24H2 and later calls the feature Energy saver. Windows 11 version 24H1 and earlier, and Windows 10, use Battery saver.

How do I turn off Energy saver permanently?

No. It disables hibernation only; it does not change the Battery saver or Energy saver setting.
Why can’t I find Battery saver under Settings > System > Battery in Windows 11?
That is the Windows 10 path. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery. On version 24H2 and later, look for Energy saver rather than Battery saver.
