For an existing C or C++ project, start with an opt-in AddressSanitizer build: compile and link with -fsanitize=address under Clang or GCC, or /fsanitize=address under a supported MSVC configuration, then run your tests with the instrumented executable. Add other sanitizers only for the bug classes they cover, and pair runtime detection with safer buffer APIs.

What memory-safety tools can—and cannot—catch

Sanitizers add runtime checks that can report certain bugs when an instrumented program reaches the faulty code. They do not prove a program is safe, and a test run cannot report a path it never exercises. Choose a tool for the defect you want to find:

Tool Primary target Key qualification
AddressSanitizer (ASan) Out-of-bounds memory accesses and use-after-free Available in documented Clang and GCC configurations and in supported MSVC configurations. Check the relevant compiler manual for target and runtime details.
UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer (UBSan) Selected undefined operations, including signed integer overflow and invalid shifts Checks can be selected individually; coverage is not a general memory-bounds check.
MemorySanitizer (MSan) Uses of uninitialized values Clang’s documented implementation requires broad instrumentation, including dependent libraries where possible, for reliable reports.
ThreadSanitizer (TSan) Data races It is not a general-purpose bounds or lifetime sanitizer.

Sanitizer combinations and supported platforms vary by compiler and version. For example, GCC documents configurations in which AddressSanitizer cannot be combined with ThreadSanitizer or Hardware-assisted AddressSanitizer; check the GCC instrumentation options for the version you use.

Enable AddressSanitizer in the build

Clang or GCC

Add -fsanitize=address to both compilation and linking. Use the compiler driver for the link step so it can supply the sanitizer runtime. Apply the option consistently to the project libraries and test executables involved in the run, rather than instrumenting only one source file.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a direct compiler invocation, the shape is:

clang++ -fsanitize=address -g source.cpp -o app

Use g++ in place of clang++ for a GCC build. The example is a minimal invocation, not a replacement for the project’s normal source files, include paths, libraries, or build settings. In a larger build system, create an opt-in sanitizer configuration and add the flag to the relevant compile and link options. Consult the Clang AddressSanitizer manual or GCC’s instrumentation manual for current runtime options and target support.

Microsoft Visual C++

For a supported MSVC configuration, enable AddressSanitizer with /fsanitize=address. Microsoft documents /Zi for debug information that can improve stack traces. Its documentation also describes optimization-level and CRT compatibility, and lists Profile-Guided Optimization as unsupported. Confirm the Visual Studio/compiler version and target details in Microsoft’s C++ AddressSanitizer documentation; the cited guidance says not to use this configuration in production.

Run the instrumented program against useful tests

  1. Make a separate development or test configuration. Keep sanitizer flags opt-in rather than silently applying them to every release build. Ensure the relevant libraries and test binaries are built consistently.
  2. Build and link with the compiler driver. Use the toolchain’s documented flags, and check its requirements for the project’s operating system, architecture, and runtime.
  3. Run unit tests, integration tests, and representative workloads. Exercise the code paths most likely to use buffers, object lifetimes, or complex allocation behavior.
  4. Make diagnostics actionable. Configure CI to capture sanitizer output and, according to project policy, fail the job when a sanitizer finding is reported.
  5. Investigate and fix each finding, then rerun. Sanitizer reports identify problems on exercised paths; a clean run is not proof that untested paths are safe.

Instrumentation can affect runtime, memory use, and binary size, and toolchains differ in their options and compatibility. Keep sanitizer builds distinct from production hardening decisions unless the documentation for the specific tool and intended deployment explicitly supports that use.

Add UBSan for selected undefined behavior

When you also want checks for selected undefined operations, add -fsanitize=undefined in a Clang or GCC configuration compatible with the project. Clang documents checks such as signed integer overflow and invalid shifts, as well as individually selectable checks. Its manual explains that using the compiler driver at link time links the UBSan runtime unless trap mode is used. Review the Clang UBSan documentation and the relevant GCC instrumentation options for supported checks, combinations, and runtime behavior for your compiler version.

UBSan addresses selected undefined behavior; it does not replace ASan when the goal is to detect out-of-bounds accesses or use-after-free. Run a compatible combined configuration or a separate UBSan job, based on your toolchain’s documented combinations.

Use MemorySanitizer only when broad instrumentation is practical

Clang’s -fsanitize=memory detects uses of uninitialized values, but it is harder to deploy than ASan. Clang recommends instrumenting all program code and dependent libraries where possible; incomplete instrumentation can make reports unreliable. Its manual lists Linux, NetBSD, and FreeBSD support and says the runtime is intended for testing, not production executables. Clang documents memory overhead of 2× real memory without origin tracking and 3× with origin tracking; those estimates apply specifically to its MemorySanitizer documentation, not to sanitizers generally. See the Clang MemorySanitizer manual before adopting it.

Reduce unsafe buffer operations in the source

Runtime checks find exercised failures; safer interfaces can make bounds more explicit in the code. Clang’s Safe Buffers guidance explains that a raw pointer does not inherently carry formal bounds information, so a compiler cannot automatically verify that every raw-pointer access stays within its intended object.

  • Use bounds-carrying containers, views, and iterators where practical instead of raw-pointer indexing or pointer arithmetic.
  • Review Clang’s -Wunsafe-buffer-usage warnings. They can flag raw-pointer indexing, pointer arithmetic, and bounds-unsafe functions such as std::memcpy() for investigation.
  • Review custom containers, views, and dependencies too. Their safety depends on consistent use and suitable hardening; changing one call site does not establish that an entire program is safe.

See Clang’s C++ Safe Buffers guidance for its programming model and the warning’s scope.

Choose a rollout that fits the project

  • Start with ASan when the immediate goal is finding out-of-bounds accesses or use-after-free in supported builds.
  • Add UBSan when selected undefined operations are also in scope, checking your compiler’s supported checks and combinations.
  • Consider MSan when you can instrument the program and enough of its dependencies, and can accommodate its documented test-oriented runtime and memory overhead.
  • Use TSan for race detection when that is the problem being investigated; it is not a substitute for a memory-bounds sanitizer.
  • Keep source-level prevention in the plan. Sanitizers detect certain runtime faults on exercised paths; bounds-aware APIs and review of unsafe operations address a different part of the problem.
