If a website says “JavaScript is disabled” or “A site requires the use of scripts,” turn JavaScript on in that browser’s settings, then reload the page. The steps depend on your browser and device. Chrome on iPhone and iPad has JavaScript on by default, while Safari has a separate switch in the iPhone or iPad Settings app.
Find the JavaScript setting for your browser and device
Use the row for the browser and device where the website is failing. Menu labels can change with browser or operating-system updates; the linked official help pages provide the documented routes.

Enable JavaScript in Google Chrome
On a computer
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu) > Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security > Site settings > Content > JavaScript.
- Select Sites can use JavaScript. Google also supports leaving the default block in place and allowing JavaScript for selected sites instead. See Google’s Chrome instructions.
On Android
- In Chrome, select More > Settings > Site settings > JavaScript.
- Turn JavaScript on, then return to the affected site and reload it. Google’s instructions for Chrome cover this setting.
On iPhone or iPad
Google says JavaScript is turned on by default in Chrome for iPhone and iPad. If a site still reports that it is disabled, check the site’s loading and connection rather than looking for a Chrome JavaScript switch. Google’s Chrome help
Enable JavaScript in Microsoft Edge
On Windows 11
- Open Edge and select More (…), then Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > JavaScript.
- Check that Allowed (recommended) is on. Microsoft’s Edge instructions describe this setting.
If Edge’s setting is unavailable or keeps changing back
An organization may manage JavaScript through Edge policy, rather than leaving the choice to the person using the browser. Microsoft documents policies that can allow or block JavaScript for all sites; support varies by platform and Edge version: Windows and macOS from Edge 77, Android from Edge 138, and iOS is not supported for this policy. If the setting is locked or reverts, contact your organization’s device administrator. Administrators can also use URL-pattern allow lists for site-specific exceptions, as described in Microsoft’s default JavaScript setting policy and JavaScript URL allow-list policy.

Enable JavaScript in Safari
On a Mac
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings.
- Open Security and select Enable JavaScript. Apple notes that JavaScript supports buttons, forms, and other website content, and that some sites may not work properly when it is disabled. See the Safari User Guide.
On an iPhone or iPad
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Go to Apps > Safari > Advanced.
- Turn on JavaScript. This is the route in Apple Support’s Safari guidance.
If the website still says JavaScript is disabled
- Reload the page. The site may not recognize the changed setting until it loads again.
- Verify the setting for that site. In Chrome, check whether JavaScript is allowed globally or for the particular site. In Edge, check that JavaScript is allowed and that an organization policy has not overridden the setting.
- Check for changes to the browser setup. Google notes that browser upgrades, security software, or patches can affect JavaScript settings. Revisit the browser’s setting and confirm it remains enabled. Google Help
- For broader Safari loading problems, test the connection. If JavaScript is enabled but the site still will not load, Apple’s general Safari troubleshooting includes trying another network and checking VPN settings. These steps address broader loading issues, not the JavaScript switch itself. Apple Support
