Yes. If your router or mesh system supports guest Wi-Fi, you can usually turn it on in its app or administration page, give it a separate network name and password, and save. Guests can then use that network instead of receiving your household’s main Wi-Fi credentials. The exact separation and sharing options depend on the device, firmware, and operating mode.

What a guest Wi-Fi network does—and what it does not guarantee

A guest network gives visitors a separate way to connect to the internet without using the password for your main Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends using guest Wi-Fi for visitors when a router supports it, and also suggests it for non-essential smart devices that only need internet access (Microsoft Support: Be safer over wireless connections).

Guest Wi-Fi is an added separation measure, not a universal security guarantee. Whether guests can reach devices on the main network, whether they can see one another, and whether selected local devices can be shared depends on the router and how it is configured. For example, TP-Link says Deco networks are isolated in Router mode, while its AP-mode instructions include an “Allow Local Access” setting. Microsoft likewise notes that guest-network behavior varies, including whether guests can access shared devices (TP-Link: How to Set Up a Guest Network for TP-Link Deco; Microsoft Support: Be safer over wireless connections).

Check your router before considering a replacement

Many router and mesh systems already include guest Wi-Fi. Check the product’s app or administration page, or search its manual or support site for “Guest Network” or “Guest WiFi.” Feature names and options vary by model and software version; TP-Link, for instance, warns that Deco settings differ across models and software versions (TP-Link: How to Set Up a Guest Network for TP-Link Deco).

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

If you are choosing equipment, compare more than whether the feature exists. Check the available security modes and bands, whether guest-to-main isolation is automatic, how router versus access-point or bridge mode affects it, whether local access or selected-device sharing is possible, and whether you can set a time limit or bandwidth control.

Set up the network in your router or mesh app

The labels differ across products, but the general process is to open the guest-network control, enable it, choose a distinct name and password, review security and sharing options, and save. These manufacturer examples show why you should follow instructions for your exact model:

Google Home app

  1. In Google Home, go to Wi-Fi > Devices > Network settings > Guest Network.
  2. Enable the network and choose a name and password different from your main network.
  3. Choose any shared devices offered, then save.

Google’s instructions require a guest-network password and describe how to disable the network when it is no longer needed (Google: Create, edit & share a Guest Wi-Fi network).

Set it up through a router’s web interface

Some routers let you configure guest Wi-Fi in a browser instead of a phone app. NETGEAR’s documented Nighthawk example starts with a device connected to the router and uses the router’s local login page:

  1. Open the router’s local administration page and sign in.
  2. Select Guest Network.
  3. Choose the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band, enable SSID broadcast, enter a network name, select a security option, and apply the changes.

That interface uses WPA2 as its documented default; other routers may show different choices, so use the instructions for your model (NETGEAR: How do I set up guest WiFi using the Nighthawk app?).

Choose security and sharing settings deliberately

Use a separate password and an encrypted security mode

Choose a password that is not the same as your main Wi-Fi password. Google explicitly instructs users to set a different guest-network name and password; TP-Link warns that leaving its guest password blank means the network will not require one (Google: Create, edit & share a Guest Wi-Fi network; TP-Link: How to Set Up a Guest Network for TP-Link Deco).

Use an encrypted mode supported by the router and visitors’ devices. Microsoft advises using at least WPA2, while NETGEAR recommends WPA3 when the router supports it. Available modes and compatibility vary, so consult the router’s documentation rather than expecting a particular label on every device (Microsoft Support: Be safer over wireless connections; NETGEAR: How can I make my home network more secure?).

Decide whether guests need local devices

Before blocking local access, consider whether visitors need to print, cast to a screen, or use another device on your home network. Some systems let you allow local access or select shared devices; others isolate guest traffic. Check the setting and test the specific use you need, since the behavior is product- and mode-dependent.

Consider a time limit

If your router offers it, a duration or time window can switch guest access off automatically. NETGEAR documents an optional time window in its app, and some Deco models offer duration controls. Otherwise, disable the guest network in its settings when you no longer need it (NETGEAR: How do I set up guest WiFi using the Nighthawk app?; TP-Link: How to Set Up a Guest Network for TP-Link Deco; Google: Create, edit & share a Guest Wi-Fi network).

Use guest Wi-Fi for smart devices only when their needs fit

A guest network may suit an internet-only smart device, but moving it can disrupt features that rely on discovering or controlling other devices on your main network. Before changing networks, check how its app and integrations work, then test the functions you rely on. Router controls and smart-device behavior are not uniform, so do not assume every feature will continue working after the move.
