The current NVIDIA FPS overlay is configured in the NVIDIA app, NVIDIA’s successor to GeForce Experience, released on November 12, 2024. Open NVIDIA Overlay with Alt+Z, configure the Statistics view, then press Alt+R in a game to show or hide the display.
NVIDIA’s NVIDIA app overview documents the app and overlay, while its Statistics overlay instructions describe the current configuration path.
How to enable the FPS counter in the NVIDIA overlay
- Start the NVIDIA app from the Windows Start menu or notification area.
- Press Alt+Z to open NVIDIA Overlay. You can also click the overlay button in the top-right corner of the NVIDIA app window.
- Select Statistics in the overlay sidebar.
- Open Statistics View.
- Select Custom. Choose DLSS only if you want a DLSS-status view; it is not the general FPS-counter layout.
- In the Custom statistics options, include the frame rate or FPS statistic. NVIDIA documents Custom as the place to configure displayed statistics but does not specify a universal checkbox label.
- Close the overlay and launch a game.
- Press Alt+R to display the configured statistics overlay. Press it again to hide it.
The counter reports the current frame rate; it does not change the game’s graphics settings or frame-rate limit.
What the NVIDIA Statistics overlay can show
NVIDIA says the Statistics overlay can display frame rates, GPU utilization, system temperatures, and other data points. Depending on your app version and selected Custom layout, it may also offer 1% low FPS.

- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
NVIDIA added selectable 1% low FPS support in NVIDIA app version 10.0.2, according to its release highlights. This differs from the ordinary real-time FPS value and can help reveal periods of poor frame-time performance and stutter.
Change the counter’s appearance and location
The Statistics overlay provides options for its position, color, size, and displayed statistics. Open Alt+Z, return to Statistics, and adjust the available layout or appearance controls.
Put the counter in a corner that does not cover a minimap, health bar, or subtitles. A small, high-contrast display can be easier to read without distracting from the game.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm NVIDIA app is running. The hotkey depends on the app and its overlay service being active.
- Open the overlay manually. Press Alt+Z. If that does not work, open NVIDIA app and use its top-right overlay button.
- Check the selected view. Go to Statistics > Statistics View > Custom and make sure frame rate/FPS is included.
- Try the shortcut after launching the game. The statistics display is intended to be toggled in-game.
- Check for a shortcut conflict. Another application or overlay may be using Alt+R. Temporarily close competing overlay tools and test again.
- Update NVIDIA app. Updates can change overlay behavior and controls.
- Restart NVIDIA app and the game. Close the game, exit NVIDIA app completely, reopen it, and test the overlay again.
A protected-content notification relates to ShadowPlay recording restrictions, not to the basic FPS statistic. NVIDIA’s release highlights describe this restriction; it is not a requirement for enabling the counter.
NVIDIA app versus old GeForce Experience instructions
Search results may still call this feature the GeForce Experience overlay, ShadowPlay overlay, or Share Overlay. Those are legacy names. NVIDIA’s current interface is called NVIDIA Overlay and opens with Alt+Z.

Do not follow the old Preferences > Overlay path as the current NVIDIA app procedure. That menu belonged to older GeForce Experience instructions. NVIDIA is directing remaining GeForce Experience users to migrate to NVIDIA app and has warned that critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off; its migration notice does not give an exact shutdown date.
Is there a command to enable the NVIDIA FPS counter?
No command is needed. NVIDIA’s current documentation describes enabling the counter through the app interface and keyboard shortcuts:
Recommended Free Tools
| Action | Method |
|---|---|
| Open NVIDIA Overlay | Alt+Z |
| Configure the statistics | Statistics > Statistics View > Custom |
| Show or hide configured statistics in-game | Alt+R |
NVIDIA does not document a Command Prompt command, PowerShell command, registry edit, or configuration-file command for enabling this counter in the cited current documentation. Be cautious with guides that recommend undocumented commands or registry changes.

Do not confuse NVIDIA app Statistics with FrameView
NVIDIA FrameView is a separate application with its own overlay and configuration. It is not required for the NVIDIA app FPS counter.
FrameView release notes describe limitations involving Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO), OpenGL/Vulkan applications, and legacy fullscreen flip. These restrictions apply to FrameView’s overlay, not the NVIDIA app Statistics overlay. See NVIDIA’s FrameView release notes.

Can I enable the FPS counter without NVIDIA app?
The current NVIDIA overlay method requires NVIDIA app. NVIDIA app succeeded GeForce Experience as the current application for these features. Other games and utilities may provide their own FPS counters, but those are separate from NVIDIA’s overlay.
Why does the NVIDIA overlay show DLSS instead of FPS?
You probably selected DLSS under Statistics View. Return to Statistics > Statistics View > Custom and include frame rate/FPS in the displayed statistics.
Does NVIDIA’s overlay show 1% low FPS?
Yes. NVIDIA added a selectable 1% low FPS statistic in NVIDIA app 10.0.2. It is separate from the ordinary real-time frame-rate value and may require a sufficiently recent app version.
Is FrameView required for the NVIDIA FPS counter?
No. FrameView is a separate NVIDIA application. The NVIDIA app has its own Statistics overlay, opened with Alt+Z and toggled with Alt+R.
The Bottom Line
Use the current NVIDIA app workflow: press Alt+Z, open Statistics > Statistics View > Custom, add the frame rate/FPS statistic, and press Alt+R in-game. The old GeForce Experience Preferences path and undocumented command-line fixes are not needed.
