To turn on dark theme in the YouTube Android app, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > General > Appearance and select Dark. On Android 10 or newer, choose Use device theme instead if YouTube should follow your phone’s system setting.
Turn on dark theme in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Appearance.
- Select Dark to keep YouTube dark regardless of your phone’s theme. Google documents this path in its YouTube Help instructions. [c001]
Choose whether YouTube follows your phone’s theme
On Android 10 or newer, the Appearance screen offers Use device theme. Choose it to have YouTube follow the Android system’s light or dark setting. To control YouTube independently, choose Light or Dark instead. [c001]
On older Android versions, the theme control appears directly under Settings > General; turn on the app’s dark-theme option there. [c001]
Enable dark theme in YouTube Studio
YouTube Studio has its own setting, separate from the main YouTube app. In Studio, tap your profile picture, then Settings, and turn on Dark theme under Device. [c003]
