To change Chrome’s appearance on Android, open More (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Theme, then choose Dark, Light, or System Default. Choose Dark or Light to set Chrome’s appearance directly; System Default lets Chrome respond to your device’s dark-theme setting or Battery Saver.
Change Chrome’s theme on Android
- Open the Chrome app on your Android device.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu) at the top right, then tap Settings and Theme.
- Select the appearance you want:
- System Default: Chrome uses its dark theme when Battery Saver is on or your device is set to dark theme.
- Dark: Chrome uses a dark theme.
- Light: Chrome uses a light theme.
These are the choices in Google’s Android instructions for Chrome’s dark theme.
Which Chrome theme should you choose?
| Chrome setting | What it does | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| System Default | Uses Chrome’s dark theme when Battery Saver is on or the device is set to dark theme. | You want Chrome to follow those device conditions. |
| Dark | Uses a dark theme in Chrome. | You want Chrome dark regardless of the system-following choice. |
| Light | Uses a light theme in Chrome. | You want Chrome light regardless of the system-following choice. |
Change your Android device’s dark theme
To change the phone’s system appearance, open the device’s Settings app, tap Display, then turn Dark theme on or off. Google notes that Battery Saver may enable Dark theme automatically on some phones, so the precise behavior can depend on the device. See Google’s Android instructions for dark theme and color scheme.
What Chrome’s dark theme changes
Google says Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages can appear dark when Chrome is using its dark theme. The setting does not guarantee that every website will change its appearance; a site may remain light. Chrome can also look dark in Incognito mode, which may explain a dark browser screen even when you did not select Dark.

Troubleshoot an unexpected appearance
Chrome turns dark with System Default
System Default can make Chrome dark when Battery Saver is active or the device’s dark theme is enabled. Check Chrome’s selection at More > Settings > Theme and review the phone’s setting under Settings > Display > Dark theme.
A website stays light
Chrome’s theme affects its own interface and some pages, but Google does not say it forces all websites to render in dark colors. A light website does not necessarily mean Chrome’s theme setting failed.
