To make Microsoft Edge’s interface dark, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance, then choose Dark under Overall appearance. Or select system default in Edge and set your device’s appearance to dark. These settings change Edge’s browser interface; they do not necessarily change the colors of every website.
Method 1: Set Edge’s appearance to Dark
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the browser, then select Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Under Overall appearance, select Dark.
Edge applies its dark browser theme, changing its default bright background to a darker color. Microsoft describes this as easier on the eyes in low-light environments or for people who prefer less bright interfaces; that description is not a quantified or clinical health claim. Method 2: Make Edge follow your device’s appearance
- In Edge, open Settings > Appearance.
- If the option is available, choose system default for the appearance.
- Use your device’s operating-system settings to set its appearance to dark.
With system default selected, Edge follows the device’s appearance preference rather than forcing its own light or dark choice. The exact operating-system controls depend on your device and software version, so there is no single settings path that applies to every Edge user. Why a website may still look light
Edge’s browser theme and a website’s page design are separate. Choosing Dark changes the browser appearance, but a site may keep its own light background and colors.

Use Immersive Reader on eligible pages
Immersive Reader offers page themes on some webpages. If its button is not available for a page, that page does not support the feature. Microsoft documents these page-level color and contrast options in its accessibility guidance: Use color and contrast for accessibility in Microsoft 365.
Try Web Remix on supported websites

If the Appearance options do not match
Open Settings > Appearance and check the choices shown in your version of Edge. Labels and available options can differ by version, so the setting may not appear exactly as described above.
