On Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later, enable the hidden Compatibility tab by registering slayerui.dll as an Administrator and restarting Windows. Then set a mode for the program’s shortcut: the documented choices are Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.
Make the Compatibility tab appear
- Sign in to Windows 2000 with an Administrator account.
- Open the Run dialog, enter
regsvr32 %systemroot%apppatchslayerui.dll, and run the command. - Restart Windows. After the restart, the Compatibility tab should be available in the properties for a program shortcut.
The tab is not exposed by default in the Windows 2000 instructions. Registering the component enables the interface; it does not yet select a mode for any program. The archived step-by-step instructions and a support-tools mirror describe this registration-and-restart procedure.
Set a compatibility mode for a program
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run in Compatibility Mode, then choose Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
- Click OK to apply the setting to that shortcut.
The Windows 2000 SP2 readme describes these environments for applications designed for Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0. It says that applications that have problems after migration “might function better” when started in one of them; it does not promise that either choice will fix every program. The Windows 2000 SP2 readme reproduced by Hexagon identifies the supported environments. Choose the one that matches the program’s intended target; the cited sources do not establish that one mode is generally better.
Use caution with installers for system-level software
Period guidance warns against using compatibility mode to bypass version checks in setup programs for system-level software. Such installers may run at a low level, and forcing them past their checks can cause serious problems. Do not treat compatibility mode as a safe workaround for those checks. Windows 2000 procedure versus current Windows
These steps describe the Windows 2000 SP2-era interface, not verified instructions for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Current Windows compatibility guidance addresses mechanisms such as executable manifests, compatibility databases, and application-specific fixes. For a modern PC, use the instructions for that Windows version rather than assuming this DLL-registration command or the Windows 2000 tab applies.
