You do not need to enable a separate Smart Copy feature in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft currently documents this functionality as improved copy and paste of URLs: by default, pasting a copied address-bar URL inserts a hyperlink labeled with the page title, while a plain-text paste inserts the web address.
To change the default, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Share, Copy & Paste and choose Link or Plain text. You can also use the paste menu in compatible apps and websites in Edge.
What Edge’s URL copy feature does
When you copy a page address from Edge and paste it with the normal paste command, Edge’s default format is Link: a hyperlink whose visible text is the page title. Choosing Plain text as the default instead makes a normal paste insert the web address.
This URL-copy behavior is sometimes described online as Smart Copy, but Microsoft’s current documentation calls it improved copy and paste of URLs in Microsoft Edge. It does not require a separate enable step.

How to copy a URL in Microsoft Edge
- Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
- Click the address bar, or press Ctrl+L to select the current address.
- Right-click the selected address and choose Copy, or press Ctrl+C.
- Move to the app, document, message, or website where you want to paste the address.
How to paste a copied URL as a link or plain text
When pasting into a compatible app or website in Edge, right-click and look for Paste as. Choose one of these formats:

For a copied address-bar URL, Ctrl+V pastes using the configured default format. Ctrl+Shift+V pastes the web address as plain text on Windows; on Mac, use Command+Shift+V.
These URL-specific commands should not be confused with the general shortcut labels: Microsoft’s Edge keyboard-shortcuts page describes Ctrl+Shift+V as “Paste without formatting” on Windows and Command+Shift+V as “Paste format free text” on Mac. Microsoft’s URL-copy instructions specify that, for a copied address-bar URL, the commands paste the web address.

Change Edge’s default URL-paste format
- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Share, Copy & Paste.
- Choose Link to make a titled hyperlink the default, or Plain text to make the web address the default.
You can open the settings page directly by entering edge://settings/sharecopypaste in Edge’s address bar.
Choose Link when you want pasted URLs to appear as clickable page titles. Choose Plain text when you need the complete address to remain visible, such as in technical notes, support tickets, or command lines.
Why you may not see “Paste as”
The Paste as menu is contextual. Microsoft documents it for compatible apps and websites in Edge; it is not guaranteed to appear in every editable field or external application.

Applications can override Edge’s enhanced copy-and-paste behavior. For example, when you paste into Word for desktop, Ctrl+V follows Word’s paste-format settings. Right-clicking there may show Word’s context menu rather than Edge’s Paste as menu. Other apps may accept only the web address or apply their own formatting.

What happened to the Smart Copy setting?
Current Microsoft Edge support documentation does not list Smart Copy as a separate feature to enable, and it provides no Smart Copy toggle or settings page. Instructions such as Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Smart Copy are not current instructions for Edge.

The documented controls are Link and Plain text under Share, Copy & Paste. Microsoft’s support page says the feature applies to Microsoft Edge but specifies no minimum version, operating-system edition, enterprise license, or account requirement.

Do I need to enable Smart Copy in Microsoft Edge?
No. Current Edge documentation does not describe a separately enabled Smart Copy feature. URL copying and the Link and Plain text paste choices are available without an enable step.
How do I paste a full URL instead of the page title?
Copy the address-bar URL and press Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or Command+Shift+V on Mac. You can also choose Plain text from Edge’s Paste as menu or make it the default under Settings > Share, Copy & Paste.

How do I make Edge always paste a hyperlink title?
Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Share, Copy & Paste, then select Link. You can also open edge://settings/sharecopypaste.
Why does Smart Copy not appear under Edge Appearance settings?
Because current Microsoft Edge does not expose Smart Copy as an Appearance setting or separate command. Microsoft documents improved copy and paste of URLs instead.
Does this work in Microsoft Word?
You can paste a copied URL into Word, but Word for desktop may apply its own paste behavior and settings. Edge’s Paste as menu is not guaranteed to appear in external applications.
