Microsoft Edge can sync open tabs between Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, but signing in is not enough by itself. You must enable Open tabs in the Edge profile’s sync settings, and the same Microsoft account must be used on each device.
Before enabling tab sync
Check these two requirements first:
- Use the same Microsoft account on every device.
- Use the same Edge profile, or configure the corresponding profile on each device.
Edge sync is profile-specific. A personal Microsoft account in one profile will not sync tabs with a different work account or another Edge profile. The profile icon may show account initials or a default avatar instead of the full email address.
Enable open-tab sync in Microsoft Edge on a computer
- Open Microsoft Edge on your Windows PC or Mac.
- Select the Profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select the Microsoft account you want to use. If it is not listed, select Add new account and complete the sign-in process.
- If Edge is already open to Settings, select Profiles > Sign in, choose the account, and select Continue.
- After signing in, select Sign in to sync data. Signing into the browser profile and enabling sync are separate steps.
- Open the Settings and more menu using the three-dot button, or press Alt+F.
- Go to Settings > Profiles > Sync.
- Turn on the Open tabs switch.
Depending on the Edge build and layout, the same control may appear at Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Your profile > Sync.
If Edge offers a Customize option immediately after sign-in, select it and enable Open tabs before completing setup. You can also use this page to decide whether other categories should sync.

Enable tab sync on Android or iPhone
- Open the Edge app.
- Select the Profile image.
- Select Accounts, then select the Microsoft account to use.
- Select Sign in to sync.
- To add a different account, select Add Account and follow the sign-in prompts.
- To check the individual sync controls, select More options (the three-dot button), then Settings.
- Select the profile image, then select Sync under Sync settings.
- Turn on Open tabs, then select Done.
The labels are different from the desktop version: mobile uses the profile image and Sync settings > Sync, while desktop uses Profiles > Sync.
Find tabs synced from another device
Once the feature is enabled on both devices, open Edge’s history or tabs view on the device where you want to continue browsing. Look for a section labelled Tabs from other devices, Recent tabs, or a device name. The exact label and placement can vary between Edge versions and platforms.
On a computer, you can also try opening the History pane with Ctrl+H on Windows. On macOS, use Edge’s History menu. If the other device does not appear immediately, leave Edge open on both devices for a short time and check that Open tabs is enabled in both profiles.

What Edge syncs with the Open tabs setting

These categories have separate switches. Turning on tab sync does not automatically mean that passwords, history, or payment information will sync. Conversely, enabling favorites can bring along saved Collections or reading lists, and Microsoft’s documentation also refers to tabs previously set aside in connection with favorites synchronization.

Why Edge tabs are not appearing on another device
1. The wrong Microsoft account or profile is active
Open the Profile menu on each device and compare the account. If one device is using a work account and another is using a personal account, they will not share the same synced tabs. Switch to the correct profile, or choose Set up a new profile for the account you need.
2. You signed in but did not start sync
Seeing Manage profile settings in the profile menu indicates that the profile is signed in. It does not prove that synchronization is active. Go to Settings > Profiles > Sync and confirm that sync is enabled and Open tabs is turned on.
3. Open tabs is disabled on one device
Each device can have its own sync-category settings. Check the switch on both the source device and the destination device. If other data, such as favorites, appears but open tabs do not, the Open tabs category is the first setting to check.

Tab sync is intended for tabs that remain open in Edge. If the source device was shut down before Edge synchronized its state, or the tab was closed, it may not appear as an available open tab. Reopen the page, keep Edge running briefly, and check again.

5. You are checking the wrong Edge view
Synced tabs are not necessarily added to the current tab strip automatically. Look in the history or recent-tabs interface for the device-specific list rather than expecting another device’s tabs to open beside the tabs already on screen.
Turn off tab sync or stop Edge synchronization
To stop synchronizing open tabs on a desktop:
- Open Settings and more > Settings > Profiles.
- Select Sync.
- Turn off Open tabs, or use the profile’s Sign out control if you want to stop sync for the entire account.
On mobile, open More options > Settings, select the profile image, and then either turn off Open tabs under Sync > Sync settings or select Sign out and turn off sync.
Be careful when deleting synced browsing data
Deleting data while Edge is signed in and synchronization is enabled can remove the synced item from all devices using that profile. Microsoft specifically identifies browsing history, passwords, and autofill data as categories that can be affected across synced devices.

To clear data in Edge on a desktop, go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data. On mobile, use More options > Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data.

If you want deletion limited to the current device, turn sync off first. On desktop, use Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Sync > Turn off sync, then clear the local data. Download history, cookies and site data, cached files, and site permissions are treated as device-stored items in Microsoft’s deletion guidance. Deleting data from the Microsoft privacy dashboard does not delete the corresponding data from the device.
Security and privacy considerations
Open tabs can expose the pages currently in use on another signed-in device. Avoid enabling sync on a shared computer unless the Edge profile is protected and you understand who can access it. Be especially careful with work or school accounts, where administrators may apply policies that restrict account use or synchronization.
You can enable only Open tabs and leave passwords, payment info, autofill, and other categories disabled. This is useful when the goal is simply to continue reading on another device without copying the rest of the profile data.

Does signing into Microsoft Edge automatically sync open tabs?
No. After signing in, select Sign in to sync data, then open Settings > Profiles > Sync and enable Open tabs.

Can Edge sync tabs between Windows and an iPhone?
Yes. Microsoft documents Edge sync across Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. The same Microsoft account and an enabled Open tabs switch are required on both devices.
Why do my favorites sync but not my open tabs?
Sync categories use separate toggles. Go to the profile’s Sync page and turn on Open tabs on both devices.
Will closing a tab remove it from my other devices?
Open-tab sync reflects the tabs available in the Edge profile. Closing a tab or failing to let the source device synchronize can make it disappear from the other device’s recent-tabs list.
Can I sync tabs without syncing passwords?
Yes. Leave password sync turned off and enable only Open tabs in the Sync settings.
How do I stop Edge from syncing tabs?
Turn off Open tabs under the profile’s Sync settings. To stop all synchronization, use Sign out on desktop or Sign out and turn off sync on mobile.
