To enable zram on a systemd-based Linux distribution, first check whether your distribution already configures it, then use systemd-zram-generator or your distro’s supported method. To confirm it is active, run zramctl and swapon --show. A zram swap device stores compressed pages in RAM; its reported capacity is not additional physical memory.

What zram does—and what its size means

zram is a Linux kernel compressed-RAM block device. When configured as swap, pages moved to it are compressed and kept in memory. This can reduce memory pressure for some workloads, at the cost of CPU work; results depend on the workload, how compressible its data is, available memory, CPU, kernel, and configuration. It does not guarantee a particular compression ratio or performance improvement.

The device’s logical size is not extra physical RAM. Its capacity describes the block device, while the actual memory occupied by compressed pages is a separate measure. For kernel details and manual setup guidance, see the Linux kernel zram documentation.

Check whether your distribution already manages zram

Before installing a manager or creating a device, inspect your distribution’s current setup. Some distributions enable zram or provide their own configuration. Avoid running a second zram manager against a device already managed by a distro service.

Package names, defaults, and configuration precedence vary. As specific examples—not a complete package guide—the systemd-zram-generator project README says Debian 12 Bookworm or later provides the package in its official repositories and documents installation for Arch. Consult your distribution’s current documentation and the systemd-zram-generator project README for the method that fits your system.

Enable zram with systemd-zram-generator

On a systemd distribution where this generator is supported and not superseded by distro-specific management, it creates zram devices and generated systemd units from configuration. Its configuration manual documents per-device sections and settings such as device size, compression algorithm, swap priority, host-memory limit, and optional writeback device. Check the installed manual because project behavior and distribution integration can change.

1. Install the generator using your distribution’s instructions

Use the package or installation method documented for your distribution. Do not assume that package names, defaults, or repository availability are identical across Linux systems.

2. Add a device configuration

A minimal project-documented example is:

# /etc/systemd/zram-generator.conf
[zram0]
zram-size = ram / 2

This is an example, not a universal recommended size. The project documentation also describes a default size expression when a configuration section exists, but distribution-provided settings may differ. Select a size appropriate to your system and check your distro’s configuration before overriding it. See the zram-generator configuration manual for supported expressions and options.

3. Check the compression algorithm available on this machine

Do not copy an algorithm name from another guide without checking the running kernel. Inspect the available choices with:

cat /sys/block/zram0/comp_algorithm

The available list depends on kernel support. If the generator is configured to use an unsupported algorithm, its documentation says setup continues with a warning; check the service logs and resulting device rather than assuming the requested algorithm took effect.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

4. Apply the configuration

The generator runs early during boot, so rebooting is the straightforward way to apply a new configuration. The project README also recommends reloading systemd and starting the generated device unit:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl start dev-zram0.device

Generated unit names and behavior can depend on the installed version and system. Check the unit on your machine and follow the installed project manual; the generator’s README documents the setup workflow.

Alternative: configure zram manually

The kernel documents direct configuration through sysfs, and zramctl provides a higher-level utility interface. This can suit systems without the generator, but accepted options and exact steps depend on the running kernel and util-linux version. Follow the kernel documentation and the local zramctl --help or man page.

Confirm zram exists and is being used

Run both checks:

zramctl
swapon --show

zramctl reports zram device characteristics and utilization counters; its columns can vary with util-linux version. swapon --show lists active swap devices, so it confirms whether a zram device is activated as swap. The generator README recommends these utilities for checking setup.

A configured device or nonzero capacity alone does not prove swap pages are currently stored there. Look for a zram device in swapon --show to confirm it is active, then compare its counters over time if you want to see whether usage changes.

Interpret the counters carefully

Depending on the tool version, output may expose values such as data size, compressed data size, memory used, and compression algorithm. These describe different things: the logical device capacity is not the amount of physical memory consumed, and compressed-data measures are not interchangeable with memory-used measures. For kernel-exposed attributes and their meanings, consult the documentation for your running kernel under /sys/block/zram0/.

A changing usage counter indicates activity over the interval you observe. There is no universal target utilization or optimal compression ratio established by the documentation; judge the readings in the context of your workload and memory pressure.

Change or disable a generator-managed device safely

Recreating a device can affect active swap: pages may need to move from compressed swap into other memory. If zram backs a temporary filesystem rather than swap, unmounting or resetting it loses that filesystem’s contents. Understand what the device currently holds before restarting or stopping its setup service.

Apply a configuration change

Rebooting is the simplest documented way to apply generator configuration changes. A runtime restart of systemd-zram-setup@zramN.service recreates the device; use the actual instance name and instructions applicable to your system. If generated unit structure changes, reload systemd with systemctl daemon-reload. When removing a device, stop its unit before reloading.

Disable zram

For generator-managed zram, remove or override the relevant local configuration according to your distribution’s configuration precedence, then stop or deactivate the generated device cleanly. Confirm the result with swapon --show. There is no safe universal deletion command: another manager or vendor-supplied configuration may still enable zram.

Choosing between the generator and manual setup

Consideration systemd-zram-generator Manual setup
Distribution support Depends on the distribution’s package and systemd integration; check its documentation. Depends on kernel and utility support; follow local documentation.
Device lifecycle Managed through generated systemd units and generator configuration. Managed through the commands or service you configure; avoid overlap with another manager.
Persistence across boots Configuration is stored in the generator configuration and processed during boot. Requires a persistent mechanism appropriate to the distribution; the kernel’s manual setup steps alone do not establish distro-specific persistence.
Verification zramctl and swapon --show. zramctl and swapon --show.

These are operational differences, not evidence that either approach delivers better compression or performance. Use the route supported by your distribution and keep one manager responsible for the device.
