The safest practical approach is to embroider a separate, removable fabric cover—not a cushion while it is attached to the headphones. That keeps the original pad and its mounting parts intact and makes the decoration easier to remove. No manufacturer guidance or testing here establishes a universally safe embroidery method, so treat the cover as a model-specific project and keep it clear of acoustic openings and attachment points.
Choose a removable cover or replacement pads

For a reversible project, a separate cover is the more cautious starting point. If your goal is to renew worn pads, use compatible replacements; do not assume a cover or pad advertised for another headphone will fit.
Identify the pad attachment before removing anything
Find the exact headphone model and consult its manufacturer’s pad instructions before removal. Pad systems differ, and one model’s procedure is not a safe guide for another.
- Valco VMK20 and VMK25 pads twist off and on. Valco also notes that the VMK20 fabric cover wears differently from its faux-leather option; it does not give a general lifespan applicable to other pads.
- JBL’s instructions say removal varies by product and type. Its example cautions users to pull carefully to avoid snapping plastic hooks.
- The RØDE NTH-100 guide describes cushions that pull away and are reattached by aligning perimeter tabs and pushing them into place. Replacement pads are available through RØDE’s service centre.
These are examples, not interchangeable instructions. If you cannot identify the attachment system or the correct procedure for your model, leave the pads installed and make a cover that does not require their removal.

Prepare a cover without compromising the headphone
- Check your model and cover fit. Compare the cover’s shape and dimensions with the earcup. Make sure it will sit securely without pulling on seams or covering ports, openings, or controls.
- Keep the headphones out of the stitching process. Work on a detached cover or fabric piece, away from the headphone. Do not insert a needle into an installed cushion or a powered headphone.
- Plan around sensitive areas. Keep embroidery clear of speaker openings, inner acoustic fabric, seams, and attachment features. This is a cautious design choice; available sources do not validate a stitch pattern or prove how embroidery affects sound.
- Consider skin contact and care. Choose fabric and thread with the area that touches the wearer in mind. Check the care instructions for the actual materials; cleaning guidance for one pad material should not be applied to another.
- Test the separate cover first. Check that it stays in place and can be removed without stretching or obstructing the cushion. Try any care method on the cover material itself before using it regularly.
No established guidance here specifies a tested stitch, needle, fabric weight, pattern, acoustic impact, or expected wear life. Treat those choices as experiments on a separate cover, not as proven headphone-safe techniques.
Reattach or care for pads only as the maker specifies
If you removed a cushion, use the exact model’s installation procedure and make sure its tabs, hooks, or twist mount are properly seated before wearing the headphones. Do not force a part that does not align. If the pad or its attachment appears damaged, stop and consult the manufacturer’s guidance or support.

Care instructions are product-specific. For example, the RØDE NTH-100 guide says to clean its Alcantara cushions with a damp cloth and not to immerse them. That instruction applies to that product; it is not a general washing rule for embroidered covers or other headphone pads.

A removable cover offers a way to make the decoration reversible, but there is no comparative testing establishing that an embroidered cover preserves sound, comfort, hygiene, or durability. Fit, attachment, materials, and care all depend on the headphone and the cover. If any part blocks an opening, shifts during use, or prevents the cushion from attaching correctly, remove it rather than trying to force a fit.
