Adobe PDF Embed API lets you put an interactive PDF viewer inside your web application and shape the experience around your product. Register for a Client ID, load Adobe’s viewer script, initialize AdobeDC.View, and call previewFile with the document details and an embed mode. You can then add the annotation tools and event handling your workflow needs.
What Adobe PDF Embed API does
Adobe PDF Embed API is a JavaScript API for displaying PDFs inside a web page rather than sending readers to a separate viewer. Adobe describes it as a way to embed a PDF viewer with only a few lines of code and offers controls for presentation, collaboration, annotations, and analytics. It is most useful when a PDF is part of a larger web experience—for example, a review screen, course page, or document library—and the application needs to manage how the viewer appears or respond to reader actions. It does not, by itself, decide which interactions your product should expose or how your application should store an approved document.
How to embed a PDF
Adobe’s onboarding flow is to obtain credentials, add the viewer script, initialize a viewer, and preview a file. A Client ID is required; Adobe provides JavaScript code and React and Angular samples in its getting-started guide.

previewFilewith the PDF URL or another supported content source, file metadata, and the chosenembedMode. - Add only the features your workflow needs. Configure annotation capabilities and event callbacks as appropriate, then test the viewer in the browsers and document conditions your users rely on.
The steps describe the integration flow, not a complete production implementation. Your application still needs to provide the actual document source and metadata, choose a container, and decide how to handle user actions and any saved changes.
Which embed mode should you choose?
Adobe documents four presentation modes: full window, sized container, inline, and lightbox. The right choice depends on how central the PDF is to the task and how much surrounding application UI must remain visible. The trade-offs below are implementation guidance rather than guarantees about a particular layout’s dimensions or responsiveness.

Choose a mode based on the reader’s task, then test the result at the screen sizes and page layouts your application supports. A mode name alone does not establish how much usable page area a particular implementation will have.
Can users comment, highlight, or edit a PDF?
The API supports annotation import, creation, deletion, update, and export. Adobe’s broader Acrobat Services overview also names commenting, drawing, highlighting, and text-editing tools. These capabilities can support review, approval, education, and other collaborative workflows, but the tools available to users depend on what the application enables.

Plan the annotation lifecycle before presenting these tools. Decide which annotation types users may create, whether existing annotations are imported, how edits are exported or otherwise retained, and what your application considers the authoritative document. The existence of annotation events or export support does not establish that your product automatically saves changes to its original PDF.

The guide also describes viewer and rendering lifecycle events, as well as annotation events for added, clicked, updated, deleted, selected, and count changes. This makes it possible to connect viewer activity with application behavior—for example, responding to a user action or measuring how a document is used—without assuming that every event is appropriate to collect.
sendAutoPDFAnalytics is true by default, and Adobe documents configuration for Adobe Analytics and Google Analytics. Text-copy events depend on the PDF permitting text copying; secured or encrypted files may not emit that event. Review the event configuration, telemetry, consent practices, and data minimization needs of your organization before deployment. The API documentation describes technical settings, not your legal obligations.

Is Adobe PDF Embed API free?
Adobe’s pricing page states that PDF Embed API has “Unlimited access at no charge.” That applies to the Embed API; it should not be confused with the separate PDF Services API, whose free tier is 500 Document Transactions per month. Adobe’s usage-limits page says Document Transaction limits do not apply to PDF Embed API. Check Adobe’s pricing page for current product terms.
What to check before launch
- Credentials: confirm the registered application’s Client ID is configured for the site where the viewer will run.
- Document access: verify that the configured PDF source works in the intended deployment and with the supported content source you use.
- Interaction scope: test the annotation tools, import/export flow, and application behavior users will actually receive.
- Events and privacy: decide which events are needed, review automatic analytics settings, and align collection with organizational requirements.
- Browser coverage: Adobe’s sample repository requires registration and a Client ID, includes runnable examples, and lists Windows Chrome, Firefox, and Edge Chromium; Mac Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge Chromium; Android Chrome; and iOS Chrome and Safari. Browser support can change, so verify the current support information against your target devices before relying on a compatibility matrix.
For alternatives, compare the qualities that matter to your workflow: rendering fidelity, layout control, annotation depth, event coverage, browser support, privacy and network behavior, credential setup, pricing, and framework examples. A basic viewer may be sufficient for reading, but it may not provide the annotation and event surface needed for an integrated review or measurement workflow.
