To embed a video on your website, copy the embed code from its hosting platform—such as YouTube or Vimeo—and paste it into your page’s HTML or embed block. If you host the video files yourself, use the HTML <video> element instead. Choose the hosted option for a quick player; choose native HTML when you need to serve the files and manage their formats yourself.
Choose an embed method
| Method | Who supplies the video | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube or Vimeo embed code | The video platform | A video already hosted on that service; the platform supplies the player. |
HTML <video> |
Your website | Video files you host and want to serve through a native browser player. |
| YouTube IFrame Player API | YouTube | Pages whose JavaScript needs to control playback or respond to player events. |
For a normal playable video, platform embed code is usually the simplest route. Use the IFrame Player API only if your page needs programmatic control; a plain iframe is simpler when visitors just need to play the video. The API uses browser postMessage and documents player construction, methods, events, and options in the YouTube IFrame Player API reference.
How to embed a YouTube video
- Open the video on YouTube on a computer and select Share, then Embed.
- Copy the HTML code YouTube provides.
- In your site editor, open the page’s HTML editor or add a custom HTML, embed, or code block, then paste the code. The exact block name depends on the site builder.
- Preview the page on desktop and mobile. Make sure the player is large enough for its controls.
These steps follow YouTube’s embed instructions. The common iframe address has this form: https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID, where VIDEO_ID is the video’s identifier. Google’s current player documentation sets a minimum viewport of 200 × 200 pixels and recommends 480 × 270 pixels for a 16:9 player; these are player-size requirements and recommendations, not study results. See YouTube player parameters.
Optional YouTube player parameters
YouTube documents parameters for supported behavior, including a starting point, captions, autoplay, playlist selection, and API enablement. For example, start=90 requests playback from 90 seconds, cc_load_policy=1 requests captions, and cc_lang_pref=fr specifies French as the preferred caption language. Check YouTube’s current parameter reference for supported options rather than relying on older or deprecated parameters.

Some controls vary by account plan, so consult Vimeo’s embedding-features-by-plan documentation rather than assuming every account has the same options.

Use the native <video> element when your site supplies the video files. This example assumes the files are at the listed paths; replace them and the MIME types with values that match your actual files.

YouTube Privacy Enhanced Mode
YouTube’s Privacy Enhanced Mode uses youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube says views in this mode are not used to personalize the viewer’s YouTube experience or ads outside your site, and ads shown in the player are non-personalized. This is not a guarantee that no data is processed, and YouTube’s API terms still apply. Websites and apps directed at children must still self-designate as required, even when using this mode. YouTube explains the mode in its embed help.

Embedding restrictions
A YouTube video owner can disable embedding, and age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites; viewers may be redirected to YouTube. On Vimeo, a Private video cannot be viewed by others through an embed, and other privacy settings determine where embedding is allowed.
Autoplay and loading hints
Do not rely on autoplay as a dependable default. MDN says modern browsers often block autoplay when a video has sound or an unmuted audio track. YouTube also says autoplayed embedded videos do not increment video views. For self-hosted media, the preload attribute offers hints, not a guarantee about browser behavior; autoplay takes precedence over preload. See MDN’s video-element documentation and YouTube’s embed help.

Troubleshoot a video that will not play
- Check embedding permission. Confirm that the YouTube owner allows embedding. For Vimeo, check whether the video is Private and whether its embed privacy allows your domain.
- For YouTube error 153, check the Referer. YouTube requires embedders to provide an HTTP Referer. Its player is intended to run inside an enclosing webpage, not as a standalone URL opened directly. Make sure the embed is on a webpage and requests include the Referer YouTube requires.
- Verify the iframe and dimensions. Check the video ID and embed URL, then confirm the viewport is at least 200 × 200 pixels. YouTube recommends 480 × 270 pixels for 16:9 playback.
- For native video, check paths and formats. Confirm each file URL resolves and that the browser supports at least one supplied format. Keep fallback content inside the
<video>element. - Check account-specific options. If a Vimeo setting is missing, consult its current plan documentation; some embedding features depend on the account plan.
YouTube describes error 153 and the Referer requirement in its embed help; its player-parameters documentation covers player dimensions. Vimeo’s embedded-video FAQ covers privacy-related playback problems.
