Google Photos on the web can send a Pixel RAW photo to Adobe Lightroom on the web, Adobe Photoshop on the web, or Photopea. You can also download the original RAW file and open it in a third-party editor. If you choose to edit in Google Photos instead, it converts the RAW image to JPEG.
Choose how to edit the RAW photo
Google’s December 8, 2025 announcement describes three routes in Google Photos on the web. Choose based on whether you want Google Photos to convert the image, want to keep the original RAW file, or prefer a third-party web editor.
| Route | What happens | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Edit in Google Photos | Google Photos converts the RAW image to JPEG for editing. | Editing in Google Photos when a JPEG output is acceptable. |
| Open in a third-party web editor | Google names Adobe Lightroom on the web, Adobe Photoshop on the web, and Photopea as editors that support RAW in this workflow. | Working in one of the named web editors. |
| Download the original | Downloads the original RAW file so you can open it in a third-party editor. | Keeping the original RAW file for editing elsewhere. |
Google says you can set Google Photos as the default RAW editor to skip the choice dialog in future. Its announcement does not say that choosing a default changes the file format or editing capabilities. The named web editors reflect Google’s announcement at that date; the list may change. Read Google Photos’ announcement.
Open a Pixel RAW photo in Lightroom on the web
- Open Google Photos on the web and select the RAW photo.
- Choose the option to edit with a third-party editor, then select Adobe Lightroom on the web.
- Continue in Lightroom’s web editor to work on the RAW image.
Google’s announcement identifies Lightroom on the web specifically. It does not establish that Lightroom desktop or mobile has the same Google Photos handoff or behavior. If you instead download the original RAW file, open that file in the editor you prefer.

Set a default editor on a Pixel
Google’s Pixel Camera Help also documents editing RAW files with a preferred editor and setting a default RAW editor in Google Photos. Those device instructions are a related workflow, not proof that Pixel app menus or behavior match the Google Photos web process. For the current device-specific steps, use Google’s Pixel Camera Help.
What Adobe compatibility does—and does not—confirm
Adobe’s supported-camera list includes a Google Pixel profile and a specific Pixel 8 Pro Telephoto Camera entry, with version information in its compatibility table. That supports only the listed entries. It does not confirm compatibility for every Pixel 8-series camera sensor, every RAW file, or every Lightroom edition and platform. Check Adobe’s current supported-camera list for the exact entry and version context relevant to your file.

Do you need a Pixel 8 Pro?
No. The editing routes described here are for Pixel RAW photos and do not require buying a new phone. Google’s Pixel 8 Pro launch material describes Pro Controls, including shutter speed and ISO settings, as camera features; those controls are capture context, not a prerequisite for RAW editing.
