You can edit a DOCX in LibreOffice Writer and save it as DOCX, but no workflow can guarantee that every Word layout detail will remain unchanged. The safest approach is to keep the original, make only necessary edits, save a separate DOCX copy, then compare the saved file—especially if it contains complex tables, graphics, forms, or page layouts.
How to edit a DOCX in LibreOffice with less risk
- Keep an untouched original. Make a working copy before opening the file. That gives you a reference and a way to recover the source if the saved copy changes in an unacceptable way.
- Open the copy in Writer. In LibreOffice, choose File > Open and select the DOCX. LibreOffice Writer can open Word .doc and .docx files, and LibreOffice can save Microsoft Office formats, including Office Open XML formats. See LibreOffice Help: Using Microsoft Office and LibreOffice.
- Make only the edits you need. Avoid unnecessary changes to styles, margins, spacing, or object placement when the output must resemble the original. Minimal editing is a cautious workflow, not a guarantee of identical formatting.
- Save a new DOCX. Choose File > Save As, select a Microsoft Office format, and confirm that the chosen file type is DOCX before saving. Do not assume the extension alone confirms the format.
- Inspect the saved file. Reopen the DOCX in Writer and compare it with the original or a PDF preview. If the recipient will use Microsoft Word, check the saved file in Word when possible; how it renders in Writer does not establish how it will behave in the recipient’s environment.
Why Word formatting can change in LibreOffice
DOCX support does not mean every Word feature is represented identically. LibreOffice Help explains that some layout features and formatting attributes in more complex Microsoft Office documents are handled differently or are unsupported. It also says the amount of reformatting to expect is proportional to the complexity of the source document’s structure and formatting. The documentation does not give a preservation percentage or guarantee for an individual file. See LibreOffice Help: About Converting Microsoft Office Documents.

LibreOffice lists potential conversion challenges including Word AutoShapes, revision marks, OLE objects, some controls and form fields, indexes, tables, frames, multi-column formatting, hyperlinks, bookmarks, WordArt, and animated text. This is a checklist of areas to inspect, not a claim that every instance will change.
What to check before returning the DOCX
Prioritize the elements whose changes would affect the document most. Compare the saved copy with the original or a PDF preview, and check the actual content as well as appearance.
#1 Best Overall
- Editor
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Page geometry and text flow: page count, margins, page breaks, columns, paragraph and table spacing, and line spacing.
- Tables and frames: widths, row heights, borders, text wrapping, and position on the page.
- Objects and graphics: AutoShapes, OLE items, WordArt, image anchors, and text wrapping around objects.
- Review and navigation features: tracked revision marks, indexes, hyperlinks, and bookmarks.
- Forms and controls: confirm that controls and fields are present and behave as expected, not just that they look right.
Think of the comparison in four ways: visual fidelity (such as breaks, spacing, fonts, tables, and graphics), content integrity (text, links, fields, and objects), editability (controls, review marks, and indexes), and compatibility with the recipient’s software. The last check matters when the file will be edited or finalized in Word.

Writer has a Compatibility panel for adjusting behavior when importing Word documents. In the current LibreOffice Help, the route is LibreOffice > Preferences on macOS or Tools > Options on other systems, then LibreOffice Writer > Compatibility. Labels can vary by operating system, release, and language. Some settings apply only to the current document, so they may need to be set individually.
Use the panel to investigate a specific mismatch rather than applying a blanket set of changes. Its options address issues such as paragraph and table spacing, spacing at page tops and breaks, table-cell spacing, tab stops, line spacing, floating-object position and wrapping, trailing blanks, and font metrics. If you change a setting, note its previous value first, then check whether the change improves the affected document. Some options describe older LibreOffice behavior, and the documentation does not promise that a particular toggle will fix a particular file.
