To preserve the look and detail in 10-bit log footage, first identify the camera’s exact log curve and gamut, then choose a working space and delivery target—usually Rec.709 SDR or a specified HDR format—and make sure the export settings support that target. Log footage is designed for later processing, so its flat appearance is expected. Correct interpretation and a planned transform matter more than the source’s 10-bit label alone.

Why does log footage look flat or different after export?

Log is an input encoding, not usually the finished viewing format. It records image values in a way intended to retain information for grading, so the untransformed image can look low-contrast or muted. The editor needs to interpret the camera’s log curve and gamut, convert that input into a working space, and then map the result to the output color space.

Adobe describes this as a source-to-working-to-output pipeline: the clip’s assigned input color space is converted to the sequence working space, then the sequence is converted to its output space for monitoring and export. If the input is misidentified, the image can look washed out, too contrasty, or unexpectedly saturated. [Adobe: Color Management options in Premiere] [Adobe: Color Management in Premiere]

Do not assume the camera file’s metadata tells the editor everything it needs. Adobe notes that common QuickTime, MXF, and MP4 camera files may not include metadata identifying a vendor-specific log space. Check the assigned input color space in the editing application, and correct it manually if it does not match the camera profile.

Choose the delivery target before grading

Decide whether the finished master is SDR or HDR before you make substantial color adjustments. Rec.709 is the default output for Premiere’s shipped presets. Premiere also supports HDR outputs such as Rec.2100 HLG and PQ, subject to compatible export format and bit-depth settings. The sequence output controls both the Program Monitor presentation and the rendered sequence, so changing the working setup late can change how existing effects appear. [Adobe: Color Management in Premiere]

  • Rec.709 SDR: Use this for a standard SDR delivery when the client or platform does not specify otherwise. Premiere’s default preset uses Rec.709 processing and output, with input tone mapping for wide-gamut media.
  • HDR: Use the exact target requested, such as Rec.2100 HLG or PQ. Do not select an HDR tag merely because the source was recorded in log; log encoding and HDR delivery are different stages of the workflow.

For camera-raw-heavy grading, Adobe describes a Wide Gamut (Tone Mapped) setup that uses ACEScct as the working space, output tone mapping, and Rec.709 by default. This is an Adobe-specific workflow option, not a requirement for every editor or project. [Adobe: Color Management in Premiere]

How to edit 10-bit log footage without losing color or detail

  1. Protect and identify the originals. Keep a copy of the camera files and note the camera model, recording profile, log curve, gamut, codec, and bit depth. Different cameras can use different curves and gamut definitions even when footage is described as “10-bit log.”
  2. Set the project and sequence for delivery. Choose the color-management setup and sequence output that match the Rec.709 or HDR master. In Premiere, settle the workflow before substantial grading because a working-space change can alter the appearance of effects.
  3. Verify input interpretation. Check representative clips from every camera and recording profile. Confirm the assigned log and gamut before adding creative corrections. If the automatic assignment is missing or wrong, set the correct input color space manually.
  4. Correct exposure and white balance. Make these adjustments before applying a creative look, using scopes as well as the monitor image. Scopes help reveal levels and channel behavior that may be difficult to judge from a display alone.
  5. Apply tone and gamut mapping for the destination. Tone mapping compresses highlights when fitting a broader dynamic range into SDR; gamut compression fits a wider color gamut into a narrower one. Review bright and saturated areas, because mapping methods can produce different highlight brightness and color.
  6. Apply a creative look only after the technical transform is understood. Avoid adding a manual conversion LUT on top of an automatic input transform unless the workflow specifically calls for both. Duplicate transforms can create excessive contrast or saturation.

In Premiere, input mapping occurs before effects and adjustments; output mapping occurs afterward. Adobe notes that turning mapping off can clip values outside the destination range, including highlights and shadows. Its mapping algorithms can also differ in their treatment of bright, saturated highlights, so inspect the actual image rather than treating the options as interchangeable. How do I convert S-Log3, V-Log, F-Log, or N-Log to Rec.709?

Use a technical transform that matches both the camera’s log curve and its gamut, then target Rec.709 for an SDR delivery. The exact transform depends on the camera and recording mode; the names S-Log3, V-Log, F-Log, and N-Log do not describe one interchangeable encoding. In a color-managed workflow, correctly assigning the clip’s input space and the sequence’s Rec.709 output may provide the transform. If using a manufacturer LUT instead, confirm whether the project already performs an automatic conversion so you do not transform the image twice.

Nikon N-RAW recorded in N-Log: a specific Premiere example

Nikon’s Log-RAW Technical Guide, with information current as of October 2025, gives a particular workflow for N-RAW recorded in N-Log. Premiere opens these clips as RED Wide Gamut (RWG)/Log3G10. Nikon’s chain converts RWG/Log3G10 to Rec.2020/N-Log with Nikon’s log-conversion LUT, then applies the N-Log-to-Rec.709 technical LUT for Rec.709/BT.1886 output. Nikon recommends its 65-point conversion LUT; it lists a 33-point LUT for environments unable to use the 65-point LUT and says it may have lower color-conversion accuracy. This is specific to Nikon’s stated N-RAW/N-Log workflow, not a general recipe for other cameras. [Nikon Log-RAW Technical Guide]

Export settings: preserve the intended SDR or HDR output

Set the export color space to match the delivery specification and choose a format, codec profile, and bit depth compatible with it. The fact that the original was recorded in 10-bit does not establish that the rendered file will be 10-bit or correctly tagged. Adobe warns when an export format or bit depth is incompatible with the sequence output and may assign a convertible export color space. If Premiere flags a mismatch, change the format or raise the bit depth as appropriate for the destination. [Adobe: Color Management in Premiere]

Troubleshoot color or detail changes

What you see What to check
Flat, washed-out, or overly contrasty image Verify the clip’s input color space and check whether an automatic transform and manual LUT are both active.
Clipped or harsh highlights Check whether input tone mapping was applied before grading; compare the output mapping or manual adjustments. Mapping disabled can clip values beyond the output range.
Unexpected color shifts in highlights Compare tone-mapping algorithms and gamut-compression settings, especially in bright saturated areas.
Correct in the editor, wrong in the export Confirm that sequence output, export color space, format, and bit depth agree and that the selected format supports the intended output.
Different appearance on another screen Check whether the display and playback environment are suitable for evaluating the intended color space. A display cannot correct a misidentified clip input or an incorrect export transform.

What to compare when choosing an editing workflow

Before committing to an editor or project setup, check whether it can identify or manually override your camera’s exact log/gamut input, select a working space, target the required SDR or HDR output, control tone mapping and gamut compression, and export a compatible format and bit depth. Also check whether the camera manufacturer provides a LUT for the precise camera and recording mode. The cited Adobe and Nikon materials document their own workflows; they do not establish an independent performance ranking of editing applications.
