To edit an AI-generated image without changing its subject, work from the existing image, specify one localized change, and clearly name the details that must stay the same. Use a selection or mask when the editor offers one, then inspect the result and undo or refine it if the subject drifts. A selection helps constrain an edit; it cannot guarantee that nothing outside the selected area will change.
Use a focused, repeatable editing workflow

Open the image you want to preserve
Upload or open the existing generated image and continue editing that image rather than asking a generator to recreate the entire scene from a fresh description. OpenAI recommends passing the previous output into the next edit and requesting one change at a time. OpenAI’s image-generation guide covers this iterative approach.

Describe the change and the invariants
Name the specific feature to change and what it should look like or do. Then state which subject traits must remain fixed: for example, identity, face, shape, pose, expression, colors, or composition. OpenAI’s concise guidance is to identify both what should change and what must stay the same, in its image-generation guide.

Select or mask the area when possible
Use the editor’s selection or mask tools to focus the edit on its intended region. This gives you more spatial control, but does not guarantee that generated changes will respect the boundary. OpenAI’s API documentation describes mask-based editing for local edits that require a mask: Images guide.

Make one edit and inspect it
Keep each request to one change when preserving the subject matters. Review the generated result, especially around the selection boundary and the subject’s defining features. If something has drifted, undo or refine the selection and prompt; restate any preservation constraint that matters. OpenAI recommends deliberate iteration, while Adobe advises reviewing variations and refining the prompt or selection in its Photoshop Generative Fill instructions.

Adapt this template to the editor you are using:
Change only [specific feature or selected area]. Preserve [the subject’s identity, face, shape, pose, expression, and other relevant details]. Keep everything outside the selected area unchanged. Match the original lighting, perspective, and style. Make no other changes.

Replace the bracketed text with concrete details. For instance, specify “replace the red mug with a blue ceramic mug” rather than “make the image better.” Include only the subject traits relevant to your image, and avoid piling several unrelated edits into one request.

Compare editors by the controls they actually offer: selection or mask precision, reference-image support, whether you can return to the working image and undo, and how easy it is to review variations and iterate. Official feature documentation describes capabilities, not a universal ranking for preserving identity.

What to do if the subject changes
- The edit spread beyond the target: Undo it, tighten or redraw the selection, and state what must remain unchanged outside it. Even a carefully drawn selection may not contain every generated change.
- The face, pose, or shape drifted: Return to the previous image, make a smaller edit, and explicitly restate the relevant preservation constraints.
- The result is close but not right: Review another variation if available, or refine the prompt and selection before generating again. Change one thing at a time so it is easier to identify what caused the drift.
What these tools can—and cannot—promise
Selections and masks help direct an edit, but they are not guarantees that the subject or every unselected detail will remain identical. ChatGPT’s editor help specifically notes that highlights are not always precise and edits can spill beyond them. Adobe likewise frames selection as a way to help control the rest of the image, with review and refinement still part of the workflow.
OpenAI’s image-generation guide describes GPT Image 2.5 Flare as optimized for speed and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst as the higher-quality option; those are OpenAI’s descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Adobe’s model picker and supported reference-image options can also change, so confirm what is available in your current version and account.

The official documentation cited here does not establish a measured success rate for preserving a subject or a benchmark comparing these tools on that task. Treat claims of guaranteed identity preservation or a universally best editor with caution.
