For routine dust on an assembled LEGO display model, use a clean, dry, very soft brush with a light touch, working from the top down and supporting fragile sections. Wash only separated pieces that need more than dust removal: LEGO recommends hand-cleaning them in water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), with a soft cloth or sponge.
Dust an assembled LEGO set without taking it apart
LEGO’s official cleaning guidance covers bricks and pieces, not a specialized procedure for dusting fragile assembled displays. Collector guidance supports a soft brush or gentle moving air for loose surface dust; a brush is usually easier to control around small parts.
- Stabilize the model. Move it only if necessary. Support the base or a sturdy structural area rather than lifting by a thin appendage.
- Choose a clean, dry, very soft brush. A soft-bristled makeup or artist’s brush is an option, not a LEGO-endorsed product.
- Work from top to bottom. Use short, gentle strokes to lift dust from studs and narrow gaps. Keep pressure light; scrubbing can push pieces loose.
- Take extra care around delicate details. Brush lightly around transparent pieces, printed details, stickers, clips, antennas, and loose accessories. If a part feels unstable, leave it in place and dust around it.
Gentle moving air is another collector-suggested way to shift loose dust, but strong air can dislodge small or lightweight parts. Avoid directing forceful air at fragile details.
When to wash pieces instead
Washing is for separated pieces that need more than routine dust removal; it is not a shortcut for cleaning a delicate assembled model. LEGO recommends hand-cleaning pieces with water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), using a soft cloth or sponge. A mild detergent is optional, but rinse it away thoroughly with clear water. LEGO cautions that hotter water may affect brick quality.

- Disassemble only as much as needed. Separate ordinary bricks from electronic hardware and sensitive or metal-containing parts. Joined elements may not clean effectively, according to LEGO Education.
- Hand-clean ordinary pieces. Use water at or below 104°F (40°C) and a soft cloth or sponge. If needed, add mild detergent, then rinse with clear water.
- Air-dry at room temperature. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight while drying. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, microwave, dishwasher, or washing machine; LEGO advises against these methods.
Clean electronics and sensitive parts separately
Do not submerge or spray electronic hardware. Unplug sensors and motors from power before cleaning them. LEGO’s guidance is to wipe electronic components and other sensitive pieces containing metal with a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil. Use only a lightly moistened cloth rather than wetting the part directly.
What to avoid
- Heat-based drying and machines: avoid direct sunlight, hair dryers, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, and washing machines.
- Strong cleaners: do not use bleach or alcohol-based disinfectants as routine LEGO cleaners. LEGO Education warns these can damage elements, decorations, and transparent pieces, or cause cracking or crazing.
- Excessive force: do not scrub delicate built details or blow forceful air at small accessories.
Reduce dust between cleanings
A display case or dust cover can help limit dust settling on a displayed model. It is an optional display solution rather than a cleaning requirement; choose one that fits the model and display space.
