If a familiar spool starts printing rougher than usual, with more stringing, weak layer adhesion, blobs, or bubbling at the nozzle, moisture may be the cause. Compare it with that same filament’s earlier results, then follow the filament maker’s drying temperature and time: there is no single schedule that safely applies to every material and spool.
How to tell whether filament needs drying
Filament can absorb moisture from the surrounding air. During extrusion, that moisture may contribute to defects such as poor surface quality, weak layer adhesion, blobs, bubbling, or smoke. Jabil also identifies rough finishes, more stringing than usual, and unexpected mechanical performance as possible signs.
These are clues, not a definitive moisture test. Start by comparing the spool with its own previously successful prints, ideally using the same printer and settings. Stringing alone is weak evidence: it varies by material and can have causes unrelated to moisture. Prusa Research and Jabil describe the relevant symptoms in their filament-drying guidance and FFF filament guide.
- Look for a change from the spool’s normal print behavior, not just a defect that has always been present.
- Several signs appearing together make moisture worth investigating, but still do not prove it is the cause.
- Prioritize dry storage for highly moisture-sensitive materials. Prusa names polyamide, polypropylene, PVA, and BVOH among the highly hygroscopic materials and recommends dry storage or drying before each print for them.
How to dry filament safely
- Find the exact filament maker’s instructions. Check the spool label or the manufacturer’s documentation for both temperature and duration. Do not assume that a setting for a material category applies to every brand or formulation.
- Check the spool’s heat limit as well as the filament’s. A cycle that suits the polymer may still warp a plastic spool. Make sure the dryer can reach and reliably hold the specified temperature without exceeding either limit.
- Use a controlled filament dryer where possible. Some dryers allow filament to feed directly to the printer while the spool stays in the dryer. When choosing a method, consider temperature range and stability, spool fit and heat tolerance, whether the device actively dries or only stores filament, and whether it supports printing from a dry environment.
- Treat a household oven cautiously. Prusa warns that household ovens may have imprecise temperature readings and may not operate at a low enough temperature for some filaments. If using one, verify the temperature with an external thermometer and ensure the oven can safely maintain the maker’s required setting.
- Store the spool dry after the cycle. Put it in a closed box or vacuum bag with desiccant, or keep it in a suitable dry environment while printing. Both Prusa and PrintDry recommend sealed storage with desiccant.
Too much heat can soften filament, cause turns on the spool to stick together, or warp the spool. Do not increase temperature or duration simply because a print still looks imperfect; first check whether the prescribed cycle was followed and investigate other causes.

- Setting Notes - Set the temperature and duration after turning on the filament dehydrator. The machine will work only when the work state is displayed on the screen. If the work mode is not displayed, the motherboard will automatically shut down after 3 minutes. If you have any unsolvable problems with the COMGROW filament dryer box, please feel free to contact us, our after-sales technical team will provide you with detailed solutions within 24 hours.
- Filament Dryer and Remove Moisture - Comgrow 3d printer filament dryer box is designed to keep filament dry and remove moisture from kinds of filaments. Internal heating during printing provides a dry storage environment for 3D printer filaments and keeps the filament dry. Avoid entanglement, clogging, poor adhesion, and layer migration caused by the dampness of the printing wire. (Note: Only used for the drying of 3D printer Filament)
- Real-time Monitoring of Temperature and Humidity - Adjustable temperature range 40°~ 50 °C, the maximum temperature is only 50°C,。setting time from 6 hours to 12 hours. A 2-inch LCD screen and touch buttons make it easy to operate, it is more comprehensive and clear of the information display. Press the power button to start, and hold the function button(M) to change the dry time and the temperature setting.
- Great Sealed Filament Dry Box -The outlet structure adopts a silicone cable sheath and Teflon tube, the outlet is smooth and can be covered with a plug when not in use. The upper cover has a snap button structure, and the sealing performance is good. When the drying box is working, the sealing hole needs to be opened to allow moisture to drain out. When not in use, the sealing hole needs to be closed to keep the consumables dry.
Drying times and temperatures vary by source and spool
The figures below illustrate why a universal chart is unsafe. Prusa’s figures apply to Prusament materials. PrintDry’s separate 2020 manual gives starting recommendations under specified test conditions. These values are examples, not interchangeable settings; use the current instructions for the exact spool and confirm that the spool can tolerate the cycle.
| Material | Prusa Research: Prusament example | PrintDry manual example |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | 45 °C for 6 hours (PLA/rPLA) | 55 °C for more than 3 hours |
| PETG | 55 °C for 6 hours (all versions) | 65 °C for more than 3 hours |
| TPU/TPE | TPU: 60 °C for 4–6 hours | 55 °C for more than 4 hours |
| ABS | Not stated in Prusa’s cited table | 65 °C for more than 3 hours |
| Nylon | PA11 Carbon Fiber: 90 °C for 6 hours | 75 °C for more than 12 hours |
| PC | PC Blend: 85 °C for 5 hours | 75 °C for more than 6 hours |
PrintDry specifies its example conditions as 50% ambient relative humidity, 25 °C ambient temperature, and an original 500 g filament spool. The manual says actual duration varies with additives, initial water content, and ambient temperature and humidity; filament exposed for weeks may need substantially longer. Its recommendations are not a substitute for the filament maker’s current instructions.

More examples from Prusament
Prusa’s table also lists PVB at 45 °C for 8 hours, ASA at 80 °C for 4 hours, and PEI at 150 °C for 8 hours. Prusa cautions against exceeding its listed values because filament can soften and stick. Check spool compatibility before using any of these temperatures.
Why industrial schedules should not be copied blindly
Jabil’s 2023 guide lists typical values of 80 °C for 4 hours for PLA, 70 °C for 6 hours for PETG, and 80 °C for at least 6 hours for nylon 6/12. The guide also warns that excessive heat can warp spools or degrade filament. These industrial examples differ from consumer-material recommendations and should not be generalized to an arbitrary spool.

What to do if drying does not fix the print
If the symptoms remain after a correct drying cycle, moisture may not be the only cause—or may not be the cause. Check the printer’s settings and nozzle condition, and consider whether the material naturally behaves differently from another filament. The cited guides do not establish a universal moisture test or guarantee that drying will resolve every defect.
