You can download a YouTube Short for offline playback with YouTube’s Download feature, or save it as a regular video file with yt-dlp if you own it or have permission. YouTube’s official download stays encrypted inside YouTube; yt-dlp can save an accessible Short to a folder on your computer.
Only save Shorts that you uploaded or have permission to download and reuse. Downloading a file does not transfer copyright or permission to republish it.

Method 1: Download a Short for offline viewing in YouTube
YouTube’s official Download feature is not a normal file export. The downloaded video is encrypted on the device and can only be watched through YouTube; it will not normally appear as an MP4 in Files, Photos, or your phone’s gallery.

- You have a YouTube Premium membership.
- You are in a country or region where mobile video downloads are available.
- The Short is one you uploaded yourself.
Premium downloads are supported on mobile devices and computers where the feature is available.
Steps
- Open the YouTube app or YouTube on your computer and open the Short.
- Select Download if the option is shown.
- Choose a quality if YouTube presents a quality menu.
- Open YouTube’s Downloads area to watch it offline.
If you cannot find the Download option, the account, region, or video may not be eligible. A valid Short URL alone does not guarantee that YouTube will offer an offline copy.
Why the Short is not in your gallery
This is expected behavior. YouTube stores official downloads in its encrypted offline-storage system rather than as ordinary user-accessible video files. You cannot use that download as a normal MP4 in a video editor, attach it from your file manager, or move it to another player.
YouTube also states that its app cannot download audio, music, or MP3 files. The official Download button is for offline playback, not audio extraction.
Save YouTube offline downloads to an Android SD card
If your Android device has an SD card, YouTube provides this setting:
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Background & downloads.
- Turn on Use SD card.
This setting affects new offline downloads. YouTube does not provide a command to move downloads already stored in internal storage to the SD card. Delete the existing download, enable Use SD card, and download the Short again.
Method 2: Save a Short as a video file with yt-dlp
yt-dlp is a command-line downloader. It accepts a YouTube Short directly; there is no special Shorts mode or separate command.
You can use either URL form:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
Replace VIDEO_ID with the ID from the Short’s URL.

What you need
- A current yt-dlp standalone executable or a supported Python installation.
- The FFmpeg executable and FFprobe. These are required when yt-dlp needs to combine separate video and audio streams.
- For full current YouTube support, yt-dlp also requires yt-dlp-ejs and a supported JavaScript runtime. Deno is the recommended option in the project documentation; Node.js, Bun, and QuickJS are also listed.
Do not install the unrelated Python package named ffmpeg and expect it to solve merging. yt-dlp needs the FFmpeg program itself.
Basic download command
Open Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt, change to the folder containing yt-dlp, and run:
yt-dlp “https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID”
On Windows, if the executable is in the current folder, use:

Keep the URL in quotation marks. YouTube URLs can contain characters such as ? and & that have special meaning to some shells.
With no format option, current yt-dlp behavior generally attempts the best available quality. When YouTube supplies separate video and audio streams, yt-dlp uses FFmpeg to merge them.
Choose the destination and filename
To place the result in a particular directory, use:

To control the filename, use:
yt-dlp -o “~/Videos/%(title)s.%(ext)s” “https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID”
The title and extension are filled in automatically. On Windows, replace the path with a location such as C:UsersYourNameVideos; quote the path if it contains spaces.
Force an MP4 output when possible
yt-dlp –merge-output-format mp4 “https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID”

This requests an MP4 container when post-processing permits it. It is not a guarantee that every source codec can be placed into MP4 without conversion. FFmpeg may need to remux or convert the streams.
Limit the video to 1080p
yt-dlp -f “bestvideo[height<=1080]+bestaudio/best[height<=1080]” “https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID”
This selects the best video stream no higher than 1080p, plus the best available audio, with a fallback to a combined format.
Inspect formats before downloading
Format IDs vary by video. List the formats available for one particular Short with:
yt-dlp -F “https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID”

When using separate streams, FFmpeg must be installed and available to yt-dlp.

YouTube changes its delivery systems regularly, so an old downloader can stop seeing usable formats even when the Short opens normally in a browser. The official update command for a standalone release binary is:
yt-dlp -U
yt-dlp has stable, nightly, and master release channels. Stable is the default, but the project documentation notes that it can become stale when external sites change. Nightly is the recommended channel for regular users and is a sensible first update when YouTube downloads begin failing:
yt-dlp –update-to nightly
For a pip installation, the documented command for the nightly package is:
python -m pip install -U –pre “yt-dlp[default]”
Current documentation supports CPython 3.10 or newer and PyPy 3.11 or newer. yt-dlp warns when the running version is more than 90 days old. You can suppress that warning with:

yt-dlp –no-update
Suppressing the warning does not fix an outdated extractor; it only hides the update notice.
Fix common download problems

Be careful with browser cookies
Some restricted videos may require authentication, but browser-cookie extraction is sensitive. Cookies can contain authentication tokens for more than YouTube. Treat any exported cookie file as a credential: protect it, do not upload it to a downloader website, and delete it when it is no longer needed.
Which method should you use?
- Use YouTube’s Download button when you only need offline playback and do not need a file outside YouTube.
- Use yt-dlp when you own the Short or have permission to save it as a file, and you need to edit, back up, or transfer that file.
- Do not use a random YouTube downloader website for private or signed-in content. Besides access and copyright concerns, you would be handing the URL or account-related information to a third party.
FAQ
Can I download a YouTube Short directly to my phone gallery?
Not with YouTube’s official Download feature. It stores an encrypted copy for playback inside YouTube, so it may not appear in Files, Photos, or the gallery. A normal video file requires an authorized file-downloading method such as yt-dlp.
Is there a special yt-dlp command for YouTube Shorts?
No. Pass the normal /shorts/VIDEO_ID URL to yt-dlp, or use the equivalent /watch?v=VIDEO_ID URL.

Why did yt-dlp download video without audio?
