Choose System Installer if VS Code must be available to all users and you have administrator access; choose the ZIP archive for a manually managed or portable installation.
Before downloading VS Code
The official download page offers Windows 10 and 11 downloads in x64 and Arm64 variants. Choose the architecture that matches your PC rather than assuming every Windows computer uses x64. To check your system type, open Start, go to Settings → System → About, and look under Device specifications.
Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code requirements documentation lists a download smaller than 200 MB, a disk footprint smaller than 500 MB, and recommends a 1.6 GHz or faster processor and 1 GB of RAM. Check the live requirements page if you use an older or managed system.
Which VS Code download should you choose?

How to download and install VS Code on Windows 11
- Open the official Visual Studio Code download page and find the Windows downloads.
- Select the User Installer for your system’s x64 or Arm64 architecture. User setup is recommended for most people.
- When the download finishes, run the
VSCodeUserSetup-{version}.exefile and follow the installer prompts. - Open VS Code from the Start menu, or open a new terminal window to use the command line. If a terminal was already open during installation, restart it so the PATH change is available.
To open a project folder from a terminal, change to that folder and run code .. The command opens the current folder in VS Code.

Other installation options
Choose System Installer when you need VS Code available to all Windows users and can provide administrator permissions. For a ZIP installation, download the Windows ZIP archive, extract it, and manage the app manually. The ZIP archive does not update automatically; Portable mode is available with this archive.
What VS Code does not install
VS Code is an editor, not a complete programming toolchain. Install Git separately if you want source control. Other runtimes, tools, and extensions depend on your language and workflow; they are not required simply to install and open VS Code.

Common installation problems
The installer causes trouble
The official Windows setup guide suggests trying the ZIP archive if the installer is unsuitable. Extract it under a folder in your user profile and launch VS Code from there. ZIP installations require manual updates.
The command-line change is not available
Close and reopen the terminal after installation, then try code . from a project folder. The installer adds VS Code to PATH, but an already-open console may not have the updated PATH value.

Does the VS Code User Installer require administrator access?
No. The official Windows setup guide recommends User setup for most people because it does not require administrator permissions. System setup requires administrator permissions and installs VS Code for all users.
