To download the right Realtek HD Audio driver for Windows 11, first check Settings > Windows Update. If Windows does not provide a suitable update, get the driver from the official support page for your exact PC or motherboard model. Realtek’s general download is not guaranteed to include the customizations your computer maker added.
How do I download the Realtek HD Audio driver for Windows 11?
- Check Windows Update. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install any available audio driver update and restart the PC. Microsoft says Windows Update is the recommended way to get current audio drivers; an audio update may appear as an optional or recommended update. - Check Device Manager. Search for and open Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, choose Update driver, and select Search automatically for drivers. If Windows says the best driver is already installed, that does not rule out a newer package on your PC maker’s support page.
- Find your exact computer or motherboard model. Use the manufacturer’s official support site, search for the model, and choose an audio driver listed for Windows 11. Follow the maker’s installation instructions and restart. Microsoft also directs users to their PC manufacturer for Windows 11 audio drivers.
- Use Realtek’s general download only when appropriate. Realtek’s Audio Drivers download page provides general drivers for its audio ICs. Realtek Semiconductor Corp. cautions that these downloads may not include system- or motherboard-maker customizations, so they are not a universal replacement for an OEM driver.
Where can I get the Realtek audio driver for my PC?
For a driver tailored to your computer, start with the official support page for the exact PC or motherboard model. The relevant package depends on the machine and its Windows 11 support, not merely on the fact that it uses Realtek audio hardware. A general Realtek package may lack OEM customizations. Without your model, it is not possible to responsibly name one universal package or version.
What to do if the driver update does not fix the sound
Save your work before restarting or changing drivers. Microsoft documents several recovery options; choose based on what happened rather than assuming every sound issue is caused by the driver.
Reinstall the audio device
If the device is present but not working, use Device Manager to uninstall the audio device, then restart Windows so it can prompt to reinstall a driver. If the audio device is missing, Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps include showing hidden devices and scanning for hardware changes. Try Windows’ generic audio driver
If the manufacturer’s driver is unavailable or does not work, Device Manager can offer the built-in High Definition Audio Device driver among drivers already on the PC. It is a generic alternative, not a guarantee that every OEM feature will be available.
Roll back a driver after a new problem
If sound trouble began immediately after a driver update, try rolling back the audio driver in Device Manager. Microsoft also recommends installing current Windows updates and restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services for sound that stops after a Windows update. If audio is distorted or crackling
A driver update may not address every cause. Microsoft lists audio enhancements, the default audio format, driver problems, and stopped audio services among possible causes of distorted or crackling audio. Test with audio enhancements turned off and try a different default audio format using Microsoft’s crackling-audio troubleshooting steps.
