Steam works on Windows 11. Download the Windows installer from Valve’s official Steam website, run it with administrator permission, and sign in to your Steam account. You do not need to install Steam through the Microsoft Store.
Steam supports Windows 10 and later. Support for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 ended on January 1, 2024, and support for 32-bit Windows ended on January 1, 2026. A supported Windows 11 installation is 64-bit, meeting Steam’s operating-system architecture requirement.
Download Steam on Windows 11 from the official website
Use Valve’s website rather than a third-party download site to avoid modified installers, fake download buttons, and outdated client versions.
- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or another browser.
- Go to store.steampowered.com/about.
- Select Install Steam.
- Save the file when the browser asks where to download it. The installer is named SteamSetup.exe.
- Open File Explorer > Downloads and double-click SteamSetup.exe.
The official download link serves the installer from Valve’s Steam distribution domain. If the address, file name, or download page looks unexpected, cancel the download and return to the official About Steam page.

Install Steam
- Run SteamSetup.exe from your Downloads folder.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks whether to allow the installer to make changes. Only approve it if you downloaded the installer from Valve’s official site.
- Choose the installation language.
- Read and accept the licence agreement.
- Keep the default installation location unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Select Install and wait for setup to finish.
- Start Steam from the Windows 11 Start menu or the desktop shortcut created by the installer.
Steam Support advises being logged in to Windows with an administrator account when installing Steam. If Windows does not allow the installer to make changes, right-click SteamSetup.exe and choose Run as administrator. Only do this with an installer downloaded from Valve’s official site.
Where Steam is installed
Steam normally installs its client here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\
Games installed in the default library usually go here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\
Steam itself does not need to be installed on the same drive as Windows. After opening the client, select Steam > Settings > Storage, select the + button, and add another drive or folder as a Steam Library location.
For example, you can keep the Steam client on the Windows drive and install large games on a second internal SSD. Steam advises against installing the client itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance problems.

Microsoft Edge warns about SteamSetup.exe
Edge and Windows Defender SmartScreen inspect downloaded files and websites. A warning does not mean you should disable SmartScreen. Cancel the download, return to Valve’s official Steam download page, and download the installer again.
Do not use a random “Steam download” mirror or disable Windows security because a third-party page tells you to.
Windows says the file is blocked
If Windows reports that the installer came from another computer and may be blocked, check that it came from Valve before unblocking it:

Smart App Control blocks the installer
Windows 11’s Smart App Control settings are under Windows Security > App & browser control > Smart App Control settings. Do not turn Smart App Control off simply to install Steam. Verify the download source first and try downloading the installer again. Microsoft notes that switching Smart App Control off may prevent it from returning to Evaluation mode without resetting or reinstalling Windows.

Steam installation can fail when security software or the network blocks its connection. Common causes include:
- A firewall blocking steaminstall.exe or steam.exe
- Antivirus or other security software interfering with Steam
- A university, business, or school network restricting Steam traffic
- A proxy, router, or ISP connection problem
- An unstable internet connection
- Another background application interfering with Steam
If Windows Firewall displays a permission prompt, allow legitimate Steam programs on the required TCP and UDP traffic. Steam’s firewall guidance specifically references steaminstall.exe, steam.exe, steamTmp.exe, hl.exe, and hl2.exe.
On a managed school or workplace network, you may need the network administrator to allow Steam. Steam’s required ports cannot simply be remapped to HTTP or replaced with an arbitrary custom range.
