Frija is a third-party Windows utility that can retrieve Samsung Galaxy firmware packages from Samsung’s Firmware Update Server (FUS). It downloads firmware; it does not install it. If you only want a routine supported update, use Samsung Smart Switch first. If you need a full package for manual installation, Frija may help—but the exact model and compatible CSC/region must match, and a separate flashing utility is required.
What Frija does—and what it does not
Frija queries Samsung’s firmware service for a package associated with a Galaxy device. The firmware source is described as Samsung’s FUS; Frija itself is third-party software, not a Samsung product. The Frija project’s release notes describe an Auto mode that can retrieve firmware information for a connected device, using Samsung drivers to collect device details.
A successful download leaves a firmware package on your computer. Frija does not flash that package onto the phone. Guides discuss using a separate utility such as Odin for manual installation, but the exact process and files depend on the device and firmware path. Do not treat a Frija download as an update already applied to the phone.

Samsung’s Smart Switch support instructions describe connecting a supported Galaxy device to a computer, opening Smart Switch, and following any update prompts. Keep the phone connected during the process, use a stable cable, and check that the computer has enough free storage.

The Samsung Gulf support page lists Android 4.3 or later, Windows 7 or later, and macOS 10.9 or later as requirements. These are the requirements listed on that regional page, not a guarantee for every Smart Switch release or region.
Before looking up firmware in Frija
Find the complete model code
Use the device’s full model code, not just its marketing name such as “Galaxy S” or “Galaxy A.” Variants of the same phone can use different firmware. Check the device information in its settings or on its original packaging, and confirm the model code before searching.

Identify the appropriate CSC or region
CSC identifies a sales or regional configuration used in Samsung firmware distribution. Select the CSC that applies to your device and intended firmware path. A package for a different carrier or region is not automatically suitable just because it shares the same phone’s marketing name.
Understand availability limits
A package may not be retrievable for every model, carrier, or region. A third-party guide by AndroidSage, dated November 3, 2023, notes that access may vary by region and that additional device information can be needed. Samsung’s public support interface is described by a third-party guide dated August 7, 2026 as lacking a general-purpose page for downloading full Odin-style packages; that is the guide’s characterization, not an official Samsung statement.

Download a firmware package with Frija
The interface can change between Frija releases, so treat these as the general lookup flow rather than a guarantee of current button names. A 2023 AndroidSage guide describes the following steps:
- Prepare the device details. Record the complete model code and the appropriate CSC/region. For Auto mode, connect the phone to the computer and install the relevant Samsung drivers so the utility can collect device information.
- Choose the lookup method. Enter the model and CSC manually, or use Auto mode with a connected device if the installed Frija release offers it.
- Check the returned firmware information. Confirm that the result corresponds to the intended model and CSC before downloading. If no result appears, verify the inputs; the package may also be unavailable for that combination.
- Download the package to the computer. Keep track of the saved file and wait for the download to complete before handling it.
- Stop before flashing unless you have a model-specific installation plan. The downloaded archive may need to be extracted, after which a separate flashing process is required. Installation instructions, required files, and the risk of data loss differ by model and firmware path.
The Frija project’s release page is the primary place to check its release information, but its current release number and Windows/runtime prerequisites are not established here. Do not rely on an older guide’s download link or runtime instructions as proof that they are current.

If Frija says firmware information was not found
A failed lookup does not establish a single cause. First recheck that the model code is complete and that the CSC/region is appropriate; then consider whether a package is available for that combination. The reviewed guides do not provide an exhaustive error diagnosis, so a “not found” result should not be treated as proof that the phone has no firmware or that the utility is broken.
- Compare every character of the model code with the device’s own information.
- Check that the CSC/region is not simply copied from a different variant or carrier.
- If using Auto mode, confirm the phone is connected and the Samsung drivers needed for device information are available.
- Try Smart Switch if the goal is an ordinary supported update rather than retrieving a full package for manual installation.
Why exact firmware matching and security policy matter
Samsung Knox documentation for Android 8 Galaxy devices explains that updates are signed for device/carrier combinations. It says a Galaxy S9 on Verizon and a Galaxy S9 on AT&T would not have updates signed with the same key. That statement comes from Samsung’s Samsung Android 8 on Galaxy Devices Administrator Guide v4.3, section 6.2, and should be understood in that document’s scope rather than generalized to every current device or manual-flashing scenario.

The same guide says that when CC Mode is enabled, only FOTA updates may be installed and methods such as ODIN or Samsung KIES are blocked. This is a restriction documented for that specific CC Mode configuration, not a universal rule for all Galaxy phones.
Manual flashing is therefore not just another way to click “update.” A model mismatch, unsuitable CSC, device security setting, or incorrect installation path can prevent the process or cause problems. The reviewed material does not establish universal flashing steps or data-loss consequences; consult instructions specific to your exact model and firmware before proceeding.
