You can start from a place search, a dropped pin, or the Offline Maps menu. The feature is available in Maps on iOS 17 or later, but offline-map availability and features vary by country and region.
Download an area in Apple Maps
Save the map before you lose service. Whichever route you use, check the selected boundary covers the places you need; a download covers a specific area, not an entire country or an automatic route across regions.

Start with a place search
- In Maps, search for a place or address and select a result.
- If Download appears, tap it. If it does not, tap More and then Download Map.
- Adjust the map area, then tap Download to save it.
Drop a pin on the map
- In Maps, touch and hold an unmarked spot in the area you want.
- Tap Download.
- Adjust the selected area and tap Download.
Add a map from Offline Maps
- Open Maps and tap your profile picture or initials.
- Tap Offline Maps, then Add.
- Search for an area or choose Current Location.
- Adjust the boundary and tap Download.
Apple documents these three ways to choose an area in its offline maps instructions; its iPhone User Guide also describes selecting an area by touching and holding the map.
Choose an area and manage storage
Before confirming, Maps shows the download’s estimated file size. Drag the boundary to include the necessary part of your trip; selecting a smaller area reduces the file size. Offline maps use storage on the iPhone.

To review a saved map, open Maps > profile picture or initials > Offline Maps. From there, you can open a map to rename it, resize its coverage, or delete it. Apple says downloads update automatically by default. The Offline Maps settings also include an option to download updates only over Wi-Fi and Optimize Storage, which removes unused maps after a period.
What works offline—and what does not
Apple lists place hours and ratings, estimated arrival times, and turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, and transit among the offline-map capabilities. This does not mean every Maps feature works without a connection: availability is limited to selected areas, and features differ by country and region. Confirm that the download option is available for your destination before relying on it.

If you want Maps to use downloaded data even while the iPhone has an internet connection, turn on Only Use Offline Maps in Offline Maps settings. This is different from simply downloading a map, which lets Maps use it when the phone is offline.

Apple’s support article specifies iOS 17 or later for offline maps. The downloaded maps do not sync across your devices, so download an area separately on each iPhone or iPad where you need it.

Apple’s documentation describes Apple Watch offline-map use differently: its support article says the iPhone must be on and within Bluetooth range, while the iPhone User Guide describes syncing maps to Apple Watch for use without the nearby iPhone. Check the guidance for your iOS and watchOS versions before relying on standalone Watch access.
