Microsoft Access is a Windows desktop program. It is not available as a Mac app, and Microsoft’s free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint do not include Access.
On Windows 11, the correct download method depends on what you need:
| What you need | Use this option |
|---|---|
| You already subscribe to an eligible Microsoft 365 plan | Install the Microsoft 365 desktop apps |
| You want to own Access without a subscription | Buy standalone Access 2024 |
| You only need to open an existing Access application | Install the free Microsoft 365 Access Runtime |
| You own Office Home 2024 or Office Home & Business 2024 | Buy Access separately; these editions do not include it |
Do not download Access from unofficial software sites. Use Microsoft’s account, product, or support pages so that the installer and license match your Windows and Office installation.
Option 1: Download Access through Microsoft 365
Access is included with several Microsoft 365 subscriptions, including Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Business Standard, Business Premium, and Apps for business. It is also included in selected enterprise plans.

Installing Access through Microsoft 365 installs the Office desktop suite. The standard installer does not provide a normal screen where you can select Access alone.
Install Access with a personal Microsoft account
- Open m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Select Sign in.
- Use the Microsoft account connected to your Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Select Install apps.
- Select Install or Microsoft 365 apps, depending on which label appears.
- Open the downloaded installer when the download finishes.
- Select Yes when Windows displays the User Account Control prompt.
- Wait while Microsoft 365 installs.
When installation finishes, open the Windows Start menu and search for Access. Start the program and sign in if prompted.
Install Access with a work or school account
- Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Select Sign in and enter your work or school credentials.
- Select Install apps on the home page. If you do not see that option, select Apps in the left navigation pane and then select Install apps.
- Select Microsoft 365 apps.
- Open the downloaded setup file.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Your organization must assign an Access-eligible license. If your account has a plan that does not include Access, installing Microsoft 365 will not add the program. Contact your Microsoft 365 administrator if Access is missing from an otherwise successful installation.
Activate Access
The first time you open Access, sign in with the account that owns or was assigned the license. Microsoft 365 desktop applications need periodic internet access to remain activated. You can use Access offline for periods of time, but it must reconnect to Microsoft’s licensing service.
Option 2: Buy and download standalone Access 2024
Standalone Microsoft Access 2024 is a one-time purchase for one Windows PC. Microsoft lists it as compatible with Windows 11 and Windows 10. This is the appropriate choice if you do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Open Microsoft’s Access product page.
- Select Buy now.
- Complete the purchase using a Microsoft account.
- After payment, open your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page.
- Find the Access purchase and select Install.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.
- Open Start, search for Access, and launch it.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Access.
Access 2024 requires a 1.6 GHz or faster two-core processor, approximately 4 GB of available disk space, a 1024 × 768 or higher display, internet access, and a Microsoft account. Memory requirements are at least 4 GB for 64-bit Office or 2 GB for 32-bit Office.

Office editions that do not include Access
Buying an Office license does not automatically provide Access. Office Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook, but neither edition includes Access.
If you own either edition, install the included applications normally, then purchase standalone Access 2024 separately if you need the full database program.
Option 3: Download the free Access Runtime
Use the Microsoft 365 Access Runtime when you need to run an existing Access application but do not need to create or redesign databases. It includes the Access Database Engine and is available in 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions.
Install Access Runtime on Windows 11
- Open Microsoft’s Download and install Microsoft 365 Access Runtime page.
- Choose the required language.
- Choose either the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) download.
- In Edge, select Run; in Chrome, select Setup; or in Firefox, select Save File and open the saved installer.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
- Open your existing
.accdb,.mdb,.accde, or other Access application file.
Runtime is not a free full version of Access. Its design-related interface is removed or disabled. You cannot use it as the normal tool for creating tables, modifying forms and reports, redesigning a database, or editing VBA.
If another Office Click-to-Run installation is already on the computer, Runtime may install the matching version. For example, a PC with Office 2021 may receive Access 2021 Runtime rather than the newest Runtime build.
Choose 32-bit or 64-bit Access
A 64-bit Windows 11 computer can run either 32-bit or 64-bit Office. Windows architecture alone does not determine which Access version you should install.

Microsoft 365 and current Office installers normally install 64-bit Office unless they detect an existing 32-bit Office installation or a conflicting 32-bit standalone application such as Project or Visio.
| Choose 32-bit Access when the database uses | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 32-bit COM add-ins | 64-bit Access cannot load add-ins built only for 32-bit Office |
| 32-bit ActiveX controls or OLE servers | These components may not work in 64-bit Office |
32-bit .mde, .ade, or .accde files |
Compiled database components can be architecture-specific |
VBA Declare statements not updated for 64-bit Office |
API declarations may need PtrSafe and other 64-bit changes |
If you are installing Access for a known older database, ask its developer which architecture it requires. If there are no compatibility restrictions, 64-bit is the current default.
You cannot install 32-bit and 64-bit Office applications together. To change architecture, uninstall Microsoft 365 or Office, including compatible standalone Office applications, and then return to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps. Select Install apps, choose the language and required architecture, and select Install.
Fix common Access installation problems
Access does not appear after installing Office
Check these causes first:
- The Microsoft 365 plan does not include Access.
- You signed in with a different Microsoft account.
- Your work or school administrator has not assigned an Access-eligible license.
- Office activation or installation did not finish.
- Access is installed but has not yet appeared in the Start menu.
To update Office:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File, then Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Select Update Now.
- After the update completes, search for Access from the Start menu.
If it is still missing, reinstall Microsoft 365 from Microsoft’s Office installation page and verify that you are using the licensed account.

Microsoft does not support mixing the same Office version’s Click-to-Run and Windows Installer (MSI) technologies on one computer. This applies to standalone programs such as Access, Project, and Visio as well as the main Office suite.
Older volume-license Office installations may use MSI, while Microsoft 365 and most current retail products use Click-to-Run. Remove the conflicting installation before trying again. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for older Office, Access, Project, or Visio entries.

Access Runtime will not install
Microsoft 365 Access Runtime is not compatible with Office products installed through Windows Installer/MSI. Runtime is also architecture-sensitive: a 32-bit Runtime may not install alongside incompatible 64-bit Office.
Check both the installation technology and the bitness of your existing Office applications before selecting the Runtime download.

Preinstalled Office may be an edition that does not include Access, or it may not be activated. Open Word or Excel and follow the displayed Try, Buy, or Activate Office option. Confirm which Microsoft account and Office edition are active, then buy standalone Access if the edition does not include it.
Access disappeared after resetting Windows
A Windows push-button reset can remove Office applications or leave their activation incomplete. Reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office from m365.cloud.microsoft/apps, then sign in with the account that owns the license.

Can I use Microsoft Access in a web browser?
No. Access is a Windows desktop application. Microsoft’s free browser-based Office apps do not provide desktop Access.
Do I need 64-bit Access because Windows 11 is 64-bit?
No. Windows 11 can run either 32-bit or 64-bit Office. Choose 32-bit Access if your database depends on older 32-bit add-ins, controls, compiled files, or unupdated VBA declarations.
Can I install only Access instead of the whole Microsoft 365 suite?
The standard Microsoft 365 installer does not offer a normal option to select individual applications. An eligible Microsoft 365 installation installs the desktop suite, while standalone Access 2024 is purchased separately.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 users, install Access from m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with an eligible Microsoft 365 account. If you want a permanent license, buy Access 2024 from Microsoft. If you only need to run an existing database, download Access Runtime—but do not expect it to create or redesign databases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore installing, check your Office edition, account, installation technology, and whether the database requires 32-bit Access. Those four checks prevent most installation failures.
