Telegram Desktop is available for Windows, macOS, and 64-bit Linux. Download it from the official Telegram desktop page at desktop.telegram.org, then sign in with a QR code or your Telegram phone number.
The desktop app works independently after sign-in. Your phone does not need to stay connected, although you still need access to your Telegram account when linking the computer.
Before you install Telegram Desktop
Check that your computer meets the current operating-system requirements:

Use only the official desktop page. As of August 7, 2026, the current stable desktop release is version 7.0.9. The direct downloads are named tsetup-x64.7.0.9.exe for Windows, tsetup.7.0.9.dmg for macOS, and tsetup.7.0.9.tar.xz for Linux.

How to download and install Telegram on Windows
Option 1: Install the normal desktop version
- Open desktop.telegram.org.
- Click Get Telegram for Windows x64.
- Open the downloaded installer. It is currently named tsetup-x64.7.0.9.exe.
- If Windows displays a security prompt, verify that you downloaded the installer from the official Telegram site, then allow it to run.
- Follow the installation wizard. Keep the default installation folder unless you have a reason to change it.
- Open Telegram Desktop from the Start menu or the desktop shortcut.
The regular installer adds Telegram to Windows like any other desktop application. It is the better choice for most users because shortcuts, updates, and startup options are handled in the usual way.
Option 2: Use the portable version
On the official download page, click Portable version instead of the normal Windows download. A portable build is an alternative way to run the desktop application without a conventional installation; it is not a different account or Telegram service.
Keep the portable files in a folder that you control, rather than running them from a temporary Downloads folder. If you store the folder on a USB drive, protect access to that drive because the local Telegram session and downloaded files may be accessible to anyone who can use it.
Windows settings worth checking
After signing in, open Telegram’s settings and look under the desktop and advanced options. Current settings include:
- Show tray icon — keeps Telegram available in the notification area.
- Show taskbar icon — controls its Windows taskbar presence.
- Launch Telegram when system starts — opens Telegram automatically after you sign in to Windows.
- Place Telegram in “Send to” menu — adds Telegram to Windows’ file-sharing menu.
- Interface Scale — changes the size of Telegram’s controls and text.
- Update automatically and Check for updates — control or manually start update checks.
How to download and install Telegram on a Mac
Option 1: Download Telegram directly
- Go to desktop.telegram.org.
- Click Get Telegram for macOS.
- Open the downloaded DMG file. The current direct download is tsetup.7.0.9.dmg.
- Drag Telegram into the Applications folder when prompted.
- Open Applications in Finder and double-click Telegram.
- Approve macOS security prompts if they appear, then continue to the sign-in screen.
The direct macOS build is the appropriate choice if you want Telegram’s desktop release from Telegram’s own website.
Option 2: Install from the Mac App Store
- Open the App Store on your Mac.
- Search for Telegram.
- Install the official app published by Telegram.
Telegram officially distributes two Mac App Store applications:

Both are official. They are different applications, so choose based on the features and layout you need rather than assuming one is fake.
How to install Telegram on Linux
Option 1: Install the Snap package
If Snap is enabled on your Linux distribution, open Terminal and run:

sudo snap install telegram-desktop
The official Snap package is named telegram-desktop. Its stable channel is latest/stable, and it supports x86_64 and aarch64 systems.
You can also open your distribution’s software store, search for Telegram, and install the package published by Telegram FZ-LLC. Graphical installation requires Snap support to be enabled in that store.
Option 2: Download the official Linux archive
- Visit desktop.telegram.org.
- Click Get Telegram for Linux x64.
- Download the current archive, currently tsetup.7.0.9.tar.xz.
- Open your file manager and extract the archive.
- Open the extracted Telegram folder and run the Telegram executable.
The desktop page also provides Flatpak. Use Flatpak if it is already part of your Linux setup and you prefer applications managed through that system. The archive, Flatpak, and Snap options are official distribution choices; avoid mixing several of them unless you have a specific reason.
Linux compatibility warning
The current desktop release supports 64-bit Linux. Telegram’s beta listing specifies glibc 2.28 or later; Telegram provides archived version v4.9.9 for Linux with glibc below 2.28.
There are also archived builds for 32-bit Linux, including v2.4.4. These are legacy versions and may not have the features, fixes, or security improvements of the current release.
How to sign in to Telegram Desktop
Sign in with a QR code
- Open Telegram Desktop.
- Choose Quick log in using QR code.
- On your phone, open Telegram.
- Go to Settings > Devices > Add Device. Depending on your language or app version, this may be labeled Link Desktop Device.
- Use the phone to scan the QR code shown on your computer.
- Confirm the new desktop session on your phone if Telegram asks you to do so.
The QR code must be scanned from the Telegram app, not from the phone’s ordinary camera app. Do not share a Telegram login QR code with another person.
Sign in with your phone number
- On the login screen, select Or log in using your phone number.
- Choose your country or enter the Country Code.
- Enter your mobile number in international format, including the country code.
- Click Next or Start Messaging.
- Enter the login code when Telegram displays the Code or Enter code screen.
- If your account uses two-step verification, enter the cloud password when prompted.
Use a mobile number in this format: +(country code)(city or carrier code)(your number)
Landline numbers are not supported for Telegram accounts. Telegram may send the login code to the verified Telegram chat on another logged-in device instead of by SMS. This is expected. If necessary, select Send code via SMS when that option becomes available.

What happens after you sign in?
Your cloud chats, groups, channels, contacts, and media begin synchronizing with the desktop app. Telegram Desktop is a standalone client, so the phone does not have to remain online after the computer has been linked.
There is one important exception: Secret Chats do not sync to a newly installed desktop session. They are tied to the two devices on which they were created and are not stored in Telegram’s cloud. Logging out also removes Secret Chats and their messages from that device. Ordinary cloud chats remain available.
To review or remove the computer later, open Telegram on your phone and go to Settings > Devices. This is also where you can terminate an old or unfamiliar desktop session.
Telegram Desktop not signing in? Try these fixes
“Invalid Country Code” or “Invalid phone number”
Re-enter the number in international format. Do not use a local dialing prefix when Telegram expects the full country code. Confirm that the number is a mobile number and that you selected the correct country.

That number is not associated with an existing Telegram account. Check for a typing error or use the number that is actually connected to your account.
The code did not arrive by SMS
Check the verified Telegram chat on another phone, tablet, or computer where you are already logged in. Telegram may send the code there first. The login screen may provide Send code via SMS as a fallback.
“This phone number is banned”
Use the Help option shown by the login flow to report the problem. Repeatedly attempting different sign-in methods will not remove an account restriction.
You forgot the cloud password
Use Forgot password? and follow Telegram’s recovery options. The login code alone is not sufficient when two-step verification is enabled.

Telegram says you deleted and recreated the account too many times
Telegram may temporarily block another sign-up attempt with the message: “Sorry, you have deleted and re-created your account too many times recently. Please wait for a few days before signing up again.” Wait for the stated period instead of repeatedly retrying.
You are considering an account reset
Do not reset the account merely because the desktop login is failing. An account reset irreversibly deletes Telegram cloud data. If you still intend to proceed, Telegram identifies the export path as Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram data. Export anything you need before deleting the account.
Updating Telegram Desktop
Telegram Desktop includes Update automatically and Check for updates controls. Keep automatic updates enabled where practical, or use Check for updates when troubleshooting an older installation.
Telegram also offers beta builds. A newer beta can be installed directly over an existing Telegram Desktop installation, but beta and stable are separate release channels. Stable releases are tested more extensively, so use the stable download unless you specifically need beta features.
Older computers and archived Telegram versions
If the current installer refuses to run, the operating system may be too old. Telegram lists these legacy options:

These versions are not the current release. If possible, upgrade the operating system and install the current Telegram Desktop build instead. Older versions may lack current fixes and account features.

Windows
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Telegram Desktop.
- Click the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
Uninstalling the program does not automatically delete your Telegram account or cloud chats. It also does not necessarily terminate every active session, so review Settings > Devices in Telegram if you want to remove the computer’s access.
macOS
Quit Telegram, open Finder’s Applications folder, and move Telegram to the Trash. For a Mac App Store installation, you can also remove it through Launchpad or Finder.

Linux
For a Snap installation, run: sudo snap remove telegram-desktop
For the downloaded archive, quit Telegram and delete the extracted application folder. Removing the application is separate from logging out or terminating the session.
Security checks after installation
- Open Settings > Devices on your phone.
- Confirm that the new desktop session is listed.
- Terminate any session you do not recognize.
- Enable two-step verification if it is not already enabled.
- Keep your account attached to a mobile number you control. Losing access to the old number can make future account recovery difficult.
Telegram Desktop is distributed under the GPL v3 license, and the official desktop page links to its source code on GitHub. Downloading from Telegram’s official page or the official app stores avoids installers modified by third parties.

Not with the current release. Telegram provides archived builds for 32-bit Linux and Windows XP/Vista, but these are legacy versions. The current build supports Windows 7 and later, macOS 10.12 and later, and 64-bit Linux.
Will my Secret Chats appear on Telegram Desktop?
No. Secret Chats are device-specific and are not stored in Telegram’s cloud. They do not sync to a newly installed desktop session.
