Windows gives you several ways to install software. The best option depends on where the app is distributed: use Microsoft Store for Store-listed apps, the publisher’s official website for traditional desktop programs, or WinGet when you want to install from the command line.

This guide covers Windows 11 paths, installer files, security warnings, S mode restrictions, web apps, troubleshooting, and how to remove an app afterward.

How To Download Apps In Laptop & PC Windows – Full Guide

Which method should you use?

Situation Best method What you usually install
The app appears in Microsoft Store Microsoft Store Store-managed app
The app is not in Microsoft Store Publisher’s official website .exe, .msi, or ZIP package
You want a repeatable command-line installation WinGet A package from the Windows package catalog
You only need a website in an app-like window Microsoft Edge web app Progressive Web App (PWA)
The PC is running Windows 11 in S mode Microsoft Store, or leave S mode Store apps unless S mode is changed

Method 1: Download an app from Microsoft Store

Microsoft Store is the simplest and safest starting point for many common apps and games. Store apps can update automatically, and apps you have previously obtained are linked to your Microsoft account.

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Microsoft Store.
  3. Select Apps or Gaming.
  4. Search for the app you want and open its product page.
  5. Select Get for a free app, or select the displayed purchase button for a paid app.
  6. Sign in with a Microsoft account if Store requests it.
  7. When installation finishes, open the app from Start > All apps.

You can find previously obtained apps by opening Microsoft Store, selecting your account picture, and choosing My Library. An app that is not currently installed normally has a Download icon beside it.

If Microsoft Store will not open

Reset the Store cache without deleting your installed apps:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK.

A blank Command Prompt window may appear. It normally closes after roughly 10 seconds, after which Microsoft Store should open automatically.

If a Store app will not run

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app, select its More button (three dots), and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair.
  4. If the problem remains, return to the same screen and select Reset.

Repair attempts to fix the app while preserving its data. Reset can remove the app’s local data and preferences, so use it second. Some apps do not offer these options.

Method 2: Download an app from the publisher’s website

Traditional Windows desktop programs often come directly from the developer. Examples include software supplied as an .exe or .msi installer. Only download these files from the publisher’s genuine website, not from an unrelated “free download” site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Go to the app publisher’s official website. Check the domain name carefully.
  3. Find the publisher’s download page and select the Windows download link.
  4. Choose Save or Save as in the browser prompt.
  5. Open File Explorer and go to Downloads, unless you selected another location with Save as.
  6. Double-click the downloaded .exe or .msi file.
  7. Read the setup screens, choose the available options, and allow the installer to run.
  8. If User Account Control asks whether to allow changes, verify the app name and publisher before selecting Yes.
  9. Launch the finished installation from Start > All apps, or search for it from Start.

What to do with a ZIP download

A ZIP file is an archive, not necessarily an installer. Right-click it in File Explorer and select Extract All. Open the extracted folder and follow the publisher’s instructions. It may contain a setup file, or it may be a portable app that runs directly without installation. Do not run an unfamiliar executable merely because it is inside a ZIP file.

When Windows blocks the installer

Windows Defender SmartScreen can warn about a suspicious website, download, or app. Do not disable SmartScreen just to force an installation through. First check that:

  • you are on the publisher’s real domain;
  • the file name and product name are what you expected;
  • the download came from the publisher rather than an advertisement or mirror;
  • the publisher provides a digital signature or checksum when appropriate.

If a trusted file has a Windows security warning, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the General tab. Windows may show an Unblock option for a file downloaded from another computer. Use that option only after verifying the source and file.

Allow apps from outside Microsoft Store

On a standard Windows 11 installation, you can install conventional desktop programs from the internet. Windows may still recommend Store versions or restrict app sources according to a setting.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Advanced app settings.
  3. Open the Choose where to get apps menu.
  4. Select Anywhere, or select Anywhere, but warn me before installing an app that’s not from the Microsoft Store.

Depending on your Windows version, you may also see Anywhere, but let me know if there’s a comparable app in the Microsoft Store. The wording can vary.

This setting does not make a download safe, turn off SmartScreen, or remove the need for administrator approval. It only controls Windows’ Store-source recommendation or restriction. If the menu is locked, the PC may be managed by an organization.

Install an app with WinGet

WinGet is Microsoft’s Windows Package Manager command-line client. It is included with App Installer on supported Windows 11 desktop editions and is useful when you know the software’s package name or want to repeat an installation.

Open Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell. Search first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
winget search <appname>

Then install the package:

winget install <appname>

Search results can contain multiple apps. For a more precise installation, use the package ID and require an exact match:

winget search <appname>
winget install --id Publisher.AppID -e

For example:

winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys -e

--id limits the search to a package ID, while -e (or --exact) prevents a loose name match. WinGet may request administrator elevation. If you decline the prompt, an installation that needs system-wide access will fail.

If “winget is not recognized” appears

App Installer may not be installed, or WinGet may not yet be registered after the first Windows sign-in. You can obtain App Installer through Microsoft Store. Microsoft also documents this PowerShell registration command:

Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe

Windows Sandbox does not include WinGet or Microsoft Store by default, so installing packages there requires additional bootstrapping.

Install a website as an app in Microsoft Edge

If a service works well in a browser, you may not need a native Windows program. Edge can install some websites as Progressive Web Apps. The result is an app-like shortcut and window, but it is still based on the website and may require an internet connection.

  1. Open the website in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select Settings and more (…).
  3. Select Apps > Install this site as an app.
  4. Confirm the app name and select Install if prompted.

If Install this site as an app is not available, that site may not support installation as a web app.

Windows 11 S mode: why an installer will not run

Windows 11 in S mode permits apps installed from Microsoft Store only. If an app is unavailable there, you must leave S mode before installing it from the publisher’s website.

  1. Open the Microsoft Store page named Switch out of S mode, or search Microsoft Store for that page.
  2. Select Get.
  3. Wait for the confirmation that the change is complete.

Leaving S mode is free, but it is permanent: Microsoft says the PC cannot be returned to Windows 11 in S mode afterward. S mode is available only with Windows 11 Home.

Common download and installation problems

Problem Likely reason What to check
The app cannot be found in Store It may not be distributed there Check the publisher’s official website. Availability can also depend on country, device, age restrictions, hardware, or account settings.
“This app can’t run on your PC” Wrong architecture, unsupported Windows version, or incompatible software Download the correct Windows version from the publisher and check its system requirements.
Administrator credentials are requested The program installs services, drivers, protected files, or system-wide components Confirm the publisher and ask the PC administrator to approve it if necessary.
The download is an unfamiliar file type The publisher may provide a package rather than a standard installer Read the publisher’s installation instructions; do not rename random files to .exe.
Several WinGet matches appear The search term is not unique Use winget install --id Publisher.AppID -e.
Store is stuck or will not launch Store cache or app data problem Run wsreset.exe, then try again.

How to check whether an app is safe

  • Prefer Microsoft Store or the software publisher’s own domain.
  • Ignore download buttons that redirect through unrelated advertising pages.
  • Check the publisher name in the User Account Control prompt.
  • Keep Microsoft Defender and SmartScreen enabled.
  • Be suspicious of “cracked,” pirated, or modified installers; they are a common malware delivery route.
  • Do not install browser extensions, antivirus programs, system cleaners, or drivers bundled as optional extras unless you specifically need them.
  • Scan an unexpected file with Windows Security before opening it.

How to uninstall an app in Windows 11

From Start

  1. Select Start > All apps.
  2. Right-click the app.
  3. Select Uninstall.

From Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the program and select its More button.
  3. Select Uninstall and follow the program’s removal wizard.

From Control Panel

Some traditional desktop programs appear only in Control Panel:

  1. Search for and open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Right-click the program and select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.

Some built-in Windows apps cannot be removed through Settings, and some programs require the publisher’s own uninstaller.

Outdated advice to avoid

  • “Every Windows app must come from Microsoft Store.” Standard Windows 11 editions also support .exe and .msi programs, WinGet packages, and supported web apps.
  • “Turn off SmartScreen to install software from the web.” This is unnecessary and weakens protection. App-source settings and SmartScreen are separate.
  • “Use Settings > Apps & features.” The current Windows 11 management page is Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • “Install Android apps through Amazon Appstore.” Microsoft ended support for Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore integration on March 5, 2025.
  • “Every ms-appinstaller: link installs with one click.” App Installer version 1.21.3421.0 and later disabled that protocol by default beginning in December 2023.

FAQ

Can I download apps on a Windows laptop without Microsoft Store?

Yes. Download the installer from the software publisher’s official website, then run its .exe or .msi file. You can also use WinGet for supported packages or install a compatible website as an Edge web app.

Where do downloaded apps go on a Windows PC?

The installer normally goes to Downloads when you choose Save in the browser. The installed program may place files in protected Windows folders, but you normally launch it from Start > All apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say I can only install Microsoft Store apps?

The app-source setting may be restricted to The Microsoft Store only (Recommended), or the PC may be running Windows 11 in S mode. Check Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings. Leaving S mode is permanent.

Is it safe to download an EXE file?

An EXE is a normal Windows executable, but its file type does not prove that it is safe. Download it only from the publisher’s official website, check the publisher in the security prompt, and do not bypass a SmartScreen warning without verifying the source.

Do I need a Microsoft account to install Windows apps?

A Microsoft account may be requested by Microsoft Store, especially for purchases or apps linked to your account. Traditional desktop installers from publisher websites commonly do not require one, although the software itself may require an account.

What should I do if an app is not available in Microsoft Store?

Check the publisher’s official website for a Windows download. Confirm that the app supports your Windows version and hardware. If the PC is in S mode, you must leave S mode to run a non-Store installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with Microsoft Store when the app is listed there. For software that is not in Store, use the publisher’s official website and verify every security prompt before running the installer. Use WinGet for command-line installations, and use Edge’s web-app option when a browser service is all you need. You do not need to disable SmartScreen to install legitimate software.
