Before you install Minecraft
- Use a Windows 11 PC connected to the internet.
- Have access to the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed Minecraft for PC.
- Choose an edition based on the platforms your friends use and the input method you prefer; Java and Bedrock have different cross-play compatibility and requirements.
- Check that your PC meets the applicable edition’s system requirements.
If you already own Minecraft for PC, sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. The official product listing says the purchased game should appear in your library, where you can download and install it. If you do not own the PC game, the official product is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC.
Which Minecraft edition should you choose?
Minecraft for Windows is the Bedrock Edition, and Java Edition is also available on Windows. Choose based on who you want to play with, your preferred controls, and whether your PC meets that edition’s requirements.

How to install Minecraft Launcher from the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store from the Windows 11 Start menu.
- Search for Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the official listing and select Get or Install.
- After installation, select Open, or launch Minecraft Launcher from Start.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Select the PC edition you want and install or launch it through the Launcher.
How to download Minecraft Launcher from Minecraft.net
- Open the official Minecraft download page.
- Choose the Windows 10/11 download option.
- Select Download Launcher and run the downloaded installer.
- Follow the installer’s prompts. The Minecraft.net Launcher download still requires a Microsoft Store login to install properly.
- Open the Launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Select the edition you want and install or launch it through the Launcher.
The official download page lists Windows 10/11 as the supported Windows download family, so Windows 11 users do not need a separate Windows 11-only installer.
Why won’t Minecraft Launcher install?
If installation fails, first check which account is signed in to the Microsoft Store. Use the account intended for the Launcher and the one associated with the game purchase.

- Confirm that the Microsoft Store is signed in to the intended Microsoft account.
- If Store installation fails, install the Xbox app for Windows PC, sign in to the Xbox app, search for Minecraft Launcher, and select Get or Install.
- You can also download the Launcher from Minecraft.net, but make sure the Microsoft Store is signed in to the intended account because the installer still requires a Store login.
- If the Minecraft.net installation fails, check the Store account and switch to the intended account if needed.
- Reset the Microsoft Store cache by pressing Windows key + R, entering WSReset, and pressing Enter.
- If these steps do not resolve the problem, use official Minecraft support rather than third-party installer sites.
FAQ
Can I install Minecraft on Windows 11 without downloading it from the Microsoft Store?
Yes. Get the Launcher from the official Minecraft download page and run its installer. The installation still requires a Microsoft Store login.
Which Microsoft account should I use?
Use the same Microsoft account that purchased Minecraft for PC. The purchased game should appear in that account’s library for download and installation.

Do I have to buy Minecraft again on a new PC?
If the Microsoft account you use owns the PC game, sign in with that account and check your library to download and install it. If it does not appear, confirm you are using the account associated with the purchase.
Should I install Java or Bedrock?
Choose Java if you want to play with friends on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Choose Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock) for cross-play with supported consoles and mobile platforms, or if you want controller or touch input. Check the official compatibility details and system requirements for your preferred edition.
