To load images from URLs into an Android GridView, supply the grid with items through a ListAdapter and bind each item’s image to an ImageView in the adapter. Use an image-loading library such as Glide to fetch, decode, cache, and display images asynchronously; request thumbnails close to the size of each cell so scrolling stays responsive and memory use stays manageable.

How an image GridView works

GridView is an Android View that displays items in a two-dimensional scrolling layout. Its contents come from an associated ListAdapter, which provides the data and the view for each grid item. The grid’s layout controls include column count, column width, horizontal and vertical spacing, alignment, and stretch behavior. See the Android GridView API reference.

For a remote-image grid, the adapter connects each data item—typically an image URL plus any caption or accessibility description—to a cell containing an ImageView. The image library handles the network and bitmap work; the adapter’s job is to bind the right image request to the right cell.

Load URL images without blocking scrolling

Do not download an image or decode a full bitmap synchronously while binding a cell. Binding happens as the grid creates and reuses item views, so slow network or decoding work there can make the interface unresponsive. Android’s guidance recommends Glide for most bitmap fetching, decoding, and display use cases; its bitmap-caching guide also discusses collections of images and recycled child views.

  1. Prepare your data. Keep each image’s stable source, such as its URL, alongside any text and accessible description the cell needs.
  2. Create a cell layout. Include an ImageView, and optionally a caption. Choose a consistent cell aspect ratio and an image scale type that suits the content.
  3. Bind with an image-loading library. In the adapter’s binding method, start a library request for the current item’s image and target the cell’s ImageView. Configure an appropriate placeholder or error image if the interface needs one.
  4. Handle view reuse. A grid recycles item views as the reader scrolls. Each bind must replace the previous item’s image state with a request for the current item; otherwise an old image can appear briefly or be associated with the wrong cell.
  5. Check real conditions. Verify the grid at representative screen widths and while scrolling a large image set, including when the network is slow or unavailable.

The exact library setup and adapter code depend on the project’s Android and library versions. Consult the chosen library’s current documentation for its dependency, request syntax, and lifecycle integration rather than assuming a sample for another version will compile unchanged.

Request thumbnails at the size the grid displays

A small cell rarely benefits from decoding the full-resolution original. A bitmap larger than the view needs consumes more memory and requires extra scaling, while a correctly sized thumbnail can look just as good at the grid’s display size. When available, use a server- or CDN-generated thumbnail; otherwise, downsample during decoding. Android explains this approach in Loading Large Bitmaps Efficiently.

Android’s bitmap-handling guidance illustrates the potential memory cost with one 4048 × 3036 ARGB_8888 bitmap: 48 MB. That is an example for that bitmap configuration and dimensions, not a universal size for every image. Large images can exhaust an app’s memory budget, and image work on the UI thread can harm responsiveness; caching is also important on image-heavy screens.

Choose GridView columns and spacing for the screen

Set the grid’s layout properties to match the cell design and available width. A fixed column count gives you direct control over how many items appear per row; an auto-fit arrangement can let the grid adapt its columns to the available width and configured column width. Neither is universally best: choose based on whether the design calls for a stable number of columns or a layout that adjusts to different widths.

  • columnWidth sets the width used for columns.
  • Horizontal and vertical spacing control the gaps between cells.
  • The stretch mode determines how available space is distributed.

These settings affect layout, not image-fetch performance. Keep the image request sized for the resulting cell dimensions, particularly when column widths change across devices.

For Compose, use a Compose grid instead

GridView belongs to Android’s View toolkit. In a screen built with Jetpack Compose, use a Compose grid such as LazyVerticalGrid rather than trying to treat it as the same component. Android’s Compose image-loading codelab demonstrates remote images with AsyncImage inside a LazyVerticalGrid, including adaptive columns. That is an alternative implementation path for Compose screens, not a requirement to migrate an existing View-based grid.
