For example: https://host/path/service.asmx?wsdl. This convention is common, but it does not work for every service; use the endpoint and access method documented by the service provider.
What a WSDL file is
WSDL (Web Services Description Language) is an XML description of a web service. It identifies available operations and describes their inputs and returned data, which compatible development tools can use to create or configure a client. Microsoft explains the role of WSDL and shows an endpoint example in its SOAP API documentation.
Download the WSDL from the service URL
- Find the SOAP endpoint. Use the service URL provided by its owner or official documentation. A website’s home page is not necessarily the SOAP endpoint.
- Add the WSDL query. Append
?wsdlto the endpoint, preserving its path. For example, an endpoint ending inservice.asmxmay useservice.asmx?wsdl. Oracle documents the patternhttp://host:port/context-root/service?WSDLand notes that either capitalization is accepted for its documented server behavior. Microsoft examples also use both?WSDLand?wsdlin service URLs. See Oracle’s web services client documentation and Microsoft’s SSIS Web Service Task documentation. - Request the URL. Open it in a browser or use an HTTP client. If the service makes metadata available at that address, the response should be WSDL XML.
- Save the response. Save the XML as a file ending in
.wsdl. If you use Microsoft SSIS, its Web Service Task includes a Download WSDL action: choose or create a local.wsdlfile, set overwrite permission as required, and download it. - Check the saved file. Confirm it contains XML WSDL definitions rather than an HTML sign-in screen, an error page, or an unrelated response. A file extension alone does not establish that the download succeeded.
If adding ?wsdl does not work
Check the exact endpoint path
Services can use distinct paths for different SOAP APIs. Microsoft’s Reporting Services documentation gives endpoint-specific WSDL paths, so verify the service name and endpoint against the provider’s documentation rather than trying the website’s root address.
Check metadata access and authentication
The service might not publish metadata at the guessed URL, or it may require authentication or configuration. In Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), WSDL is generated when metadata endpoints are published; Microsoft describes this behavior in its ServiceDescription and WSDL reference. If the response is a sign-in page or an access error, use the credentials and metadata instructions supplied for that service.

Look for a vendor-provided download
Some providers distribute WSDL separately instead of exposing it through the endpoint query. Oracle NetSuite directs users to its SOAP documentation page to download the current WSDL as a ZIP. NetSuite also distinguishes production and sandbox SOAP URLs, so select the WSDL and endpoint for the environment you intend to use. See the NetSuite SOAP Web Services FAQ.
Check for imported documents
A WSDL can refer to additional schemas or documents. If your client tool reports missing definitions after importing the file, consult the service’s documentation and the tool’s instructions for handling linked resources; one downloaded file may not contain everything the client needs.

What to verify before using the file
- The URL corresponds to the intended SOAP service and environment, such as production or sandbox.
- The response is WSDL XML, not an HTML page or an HTTP error response.
- The file is saved with a
.wsdlextension and opens in the client tool you plan to use. - If the service or client reports unresolved references, check whether the WSDL imports additional schemas or documents.
