You can return from a macOS beta while preserving data that exists in a usable Time Machine backup made before the beta—but Apple’s documented downgrade process erases the Mac first. Turning off beta updates only stops future beta releases; it does not roll back the macOS already installed. Before erasing, copy any irreplaceable files created or changed since your pre-beta backup to another safe location.
Choose between stopping beta updates and going back now
| Your goal | What to do | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop receiving future beta versions | Turn off Beta Updates in System Settings > General > Software Update. | Future beta delivery stops; the beta already installed remains. When the next public version is available, Apple says you can install it through Software Update. Apple’s unenrollment instructions give version-specific steps. |
| Return to a previously released macOS now | Erase and reinstall macOS, then restore from a Time Machine backup made before installing the beta. | The Mac’s current contents are erased. Data preserved in the older backup can be restored, but changes made only under the beta may not be recoverable. Apple’s Restore Shipping Software instructions |
On Ventura 13.4 or later, Apple’s instructions use the Beta Updates control in Software Update; Ventura 13.3 or earlier uses enrollment details and Restore Defaults. Check Apple’s current instructions for your macOS version rather than assuming every release has the same labels.
Check that you have a usable pre-beta backup
The key restore point is a Time Machine backup completed before you installed the beta. Apple’s instructions specify that the backup’s macOS version must precede the beta. A backup made while running the beta is useful as a separate source for current files, but it does not replace the required pre-beta restore point.
- Confirm the older backup is complete and that you can browse it or restore an important file. Apple’s Time Machine restore guide explains how to recover selected items and earlier file versions.
- Copy files created or changed since that backup to a separate safe destination. Apple’s beta terms warn that data created or changed using prerelease software may not be restorable or recoverable. Apple Beta Software Agreement
- Keep the current beta-era backup separate; do not overwrite the pre-beta restore point. You may be able to retrieve selected files from the newer backup later, but app libraries or other beta-era changes may not work with the earlier macOS.
- If you use an encrypted backup, make sure you know its password. Have your Apple Account credentials available if the restore or setup process requests them.
- If you do not yet have a current safety copy, make one on storage separate from the Mac’s internal disk, such as an external hard drive, and verify it completed. Apple recommends keeping a backup outside the internal disk. Apple’s backup guide
Do not erase the Mac if you need data that exists nowhere else. Apple cautions that erasing permanently deletes files. Apple’s erase guidance

Know which restore route applies to your Mac
| Mac type | Apple’s beta-return route | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Mac | Apple’s beta instructions describe Internet Recovery, erasing the startup volume group, reinstalling macOS, then choosing the pre-beta Time Machine backup during Setup Assistant. | The instructions include Option-Command-R or Option-Shift-Command-R and direct users to turn off Find My Mac and sign out before proceeding. Confirm which macOS the chosen Recovery combination will install for your model. |
| Apple silicon Mac | Apple’s beta instructions point to restoring with Apple Configurator 2, followed by restoring the pre-beta backup in Setup Assistant. | Do not apply Intel Recovery key combinations. Follow Apple’s current device-specific restore instructions. |
Apple’s general Recovery guidance distinguishes Apple silicon startup options from Intel key combinations, and the macOS offered can depend on the Mac and selected Recovery option. Verify that the route will install a compatible version that meets your goal before erasing. Apple’s macOS Recovery guide
Erase, reinstall, and restore the earlier backup
- Prepare first: complete the checks above, keep the pre-beta backup available, and separately protect newer files. If your chosen Apple procedure requires it, turn off Find My Mac and sign out as directed.
- Start the correct recovery process: use Apple’s current instructions for your Mac’s architecture and model. The Intel beta workflow uses Internet Recovery; Apple silicon follows its Apple Configurator restore procedure.
- Erase the startup volume group: proceed only when you are ready for the Mac’s current contents to be deleted. Apple’s beta workflow calls for erasing before reinstalling.
- Reinstall macOS: complete the installation offered by the appropriate Apple restore route. If it offers a release other than the one you intend to use, stop and check Apple’s instructions for your model before continuing.
- Restore the pre-beta backup: during Setup Assistant, select the Time Machine backup made before the beta. If you have already completed setup, use Migration Assistant to transfer content from that backup. Apple’s Migration Assistant guide
- Recover newer items selectively: after the older system is running, use Time Machine to retrieve individual files or earlier versions from a separate newer backup where possible. Avoid assuming that beta-era app state can be imported intact.
Apple says a Time Machine migration can transfer personal files, apps, and a user account. For a full system recovery, macOS must be installed first; Migration Assistant is for transferring content, not replacing that installation step. Large transfers may take hours, according to Apple’s Migration Assistant guidance.

If you do not have a pre-beta backup
Apple’s documented downgrade workflow depends on restoring a backup created before beta installation. Without one, that workflow cannot return the Mac to its pre-beta data and system state. You can still protect and later recover files you copied separately or can extract from a newer backup, but this does not guarantee that beta-era app data or the prior system configuration can be recovered. If your priority is only to avoid future beta builds, turn off Beta Updates instead of erasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why reinstalling macOS in place is not the downgrade method
Apple’s general reinstall guidance says reinstalling macOS without erasing preserves apps and personal data. That is not the documented procedure for returning from a beta to an earlier release: Apple’s beta instructions call for erasing, reinstalling, and restoring a pre-beta backup. Do not treat an in-place reinstall as a substitute for that workflow. Apple’s reinstall and Recovery guidance
