Microsoft Edge does not normally restore an older version when you uninstall the browser. To downgrade Chromium-based Edge, use one of Microsoft’s supported rollback methods: install an older Edge MSI with ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1, or configure Microsoft Edge Update to roll back to a specified version through Group Policy.
Both methods require administrator access. The Group Policy rollback feature is intended for managed Windows PCs joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain and supports Microsoft Edge 86 or later. Before changing versions, turn on Edge Sync and back up important bookmarks, passwords, and other profile data.
Before you downgrade Edge
Check the version currently installed by opening Edge and navigating to edge://settings/help. Record the complete version number, including all four components, for example 124.0.2478.67.

Older Edge releases are not recommended for normal use because Microsoft provides security and servicing updates only for the latest Stable and latest Beta releases. Use a downgrade temporarily to test compatibility or to work around a known regression, then return to a supported release as soon as possible.
Protect your Edge profile
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (
Alt+F). - Open Settings > Profiles > Sync.
- Turn on Sync, or at least synchronize the data you need.
- Close Edge before installing the older version.
Microsoft says Edge creates a version-stamped user-data snapshot during an upgrade. A rollback can use a matching snapshot, but if one is unavailable, Sync may be needed to repopulate the profile. Without Sync or a usable snapshot, browsing data can be lost. Edge retains three snapshots by default; administrators can change this with the UserDataSnapshotRetentionLimit policy, which accepts values from 0 through 5.
Method 1: Install an older Edge MSI
This is the direct method when you have the required MSI installer. The ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 property is essential; without it, Windows Installer will not perform the downgrade.
1. Stop Edge updates temporarily
On Windows editions that include Local Group Policy Editor:

Windows+R, typegpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge Update > Applications > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Update policy override.
- Select Enabled.
- Under Options, set Policy to Update disabled, then select OK.
If the Edge Update policy templates are not listed, install Microsoft’s administrative templates first. The relevant update policies are contained in msedgeupdate.admx; browser policies use msedge.admx.

2. Download the required MSI
Use the older-version selectors on Microsoft’s Edge Enterprise download page. Choose the correct channel, build, and Windows platform. Save the MSI somewhere easy to reference, such as your Desktop.
3. Run the rollback command
- Open Command Prompt by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Change to the folder containing the MSI, or use its full path.
- Run the following command, replacing the filename:
msiexec /I FileName.msi /qn ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1For example:
msiexec /I C:UsersusernameDesktopMicrosoftEdgeEnterpriseX64.msi /qn ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1The /qn switch runs the installer without a normal user interface. If the command returns without an obvious message, wait for Windows Installer to finish before opening Edge.
4. Confirm the result
- Close and reopen Edge.
- Open Settings and more (Alt+F) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Confirm that the displayed version is the target release.
If the MSI does not downgrade, check that ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 was included and that the Install update policy has not been disabled. If the Install policy is disabled, Edge channels cannot be installed and the MSI rollback will not occur.

This method tells Microsoft Edge Update to install a precise target version. Microsoft documents this rollback feature for Windows devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain and for Microsoft Edge 86 or later. It is not a general-purpose downgrade switch for every unmanaged Windows PC.
1. Install the policy templates if necessary
The policies appear only when the correct administrative templates are installed. For a standalone local-policy installation, copy:

Install the matching msedgeupdate.admx and language file as well, because the rollback and update settings belong to the Edge Update template.
2. Configure the target version
- Press
Windows+R, entergpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Open Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge Update > Applications > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Roll back to Target version, select Enabled, and select OK.
- Open Target version override, select Enabled, enter the complete version, and select OK. Example:
83.0.499.12. - Open Update policy override, select Enabled, and choose an update-enabled option such as Always allow updates or Automatic silent updates only.
- Select OK.
Do not choose Updates disabled for this method. Edge Update must be allowed to process the rollback. Manual updates only is also an enabled policy state in the current policy documentation, although Microsoft’s rollback procedure specifically lists Always allow updates and Automatic silent updates only.
Setting only Target version override is not enough. The Roll back to Target version policy must also be enabled, and Update policy override must be set to an on state.
3. Refresh policy
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
gpupdate /forceThe rollback occurs the next time Microsoft Edge Update checks for updates. Edge Update normally checks approximately every 10 hours, so gpupdate /force refreshes Group Policy but does not guarantee an immediate rollback.
4. Verify the policies and version
In Edge, open:
edge://policyClose and reopen Edge if it was running while the policies were configured. Confirm that the rollback, target-version, and update policies appear with the expected values. Then check Settings and more (Alt+F) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge for the installed version.

These GUIDs are for the Stable channel. Beta, Dev, and Canary use different product GUIDs, so do not reuse the Stable GUID when managing another channel.
Why the downgrade may fail

What not to do
- Do not rely on uninstalling Edge. The old version will not normally reappear. The automatic restoration behavior associated with the EdgeHTML-to-Chromium transition does not describe current Chromium Edge rollback.
- Do not set only a target version. Target version override alone does not downgrade an existing newer installation.
- Do not disable updates for the Group Policy method. That prevents Edge Update from executing the rollback.
- Do not leave an old release installed indefinitely. Older versions miss current security and quality fixes.
After testing the older version
Remove or reverse the temporary rollback controls when the compatibility test is complete. In Local Group Policy Editor, return Roll back to Target version, Target version override, and Update policy override to Not Configured, unless your organization has a deliberate version-management policy. Remove equivalent registry values if they were created manually, then run:
gpupdate /forceReopen Edge and check edge://policy. Leaving a bad or nonexistent target version configured can keep Edge from updating to future releases.
FAQ
Can I downgrade Edge by uninstalling it?
Usually no. Current Chromium-based Edge does not normally restore the previous version after an uninstall. Use the older-version MSI with ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 or Microsoft Edge Update rollback through Group Policy.

Why does Target version override not downgrade Edge by itself?
Microsoft separates the target from the action. Target version override specifies the version, while Roll back to Target version must be enabled to tell Edge Update to move an existing installation backward.
Does Group Policy rollback work on Windows Home?
Microsoft documents this rollback feature for Windows devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain. Local Group Policy Editor is also unavailable by default on many Home editions, so use the MSI method only if your Windows installation and management setup support it.
How long does an Edge rollback take?
After Group Policy is refreshed, rollback waits for the next Microsoft Edge Update check, which normally occurs about every 10 hours. gpupdate /force refreshes policy but does not force the update service to check immediately.
Will my bookmarks and passwords survive the downgrade?
They may, but Microsoft recommends enabling Edge Sync first. Edge can use a matching version-stamped profile snapshot, but missing snapshots or unsynchronized data can result in permanent data loss.

Edge 109 was the final version supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Edge 110 requires Windows 10 or later. That old release should not be used for routine browsing because it no longer receives current security fixes.
The Bottom Line
For a one-time downgrade, download the correct Microsoft Edge MSI and run it from an elevated Command Prompt with ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1. For managed, repeatable rollbacks, enable Roll back to Target version, set a valid complete version under Target version override, and leave Edge Update in an enabled state. Back up or synchronize the profile first, verify the result at edge://policy and About Microsoft Edge, and remove the rollback policy when testing is finished.
