The option depends on the phone maker, model, launcher and Android version. On supported Motorola phones, the feature is called Jump to lock screen for waking the phone and Put display to sleep for turning the screen off.
Google Pixel phones use different gesture names and do not provide a general double-tap-the-screen-to-turn-off setting in Google’s current documentation. Use the instructions below for Motorola first, then check the manufacturer-specific alternatives and troubleshooting steps.
What the two double-tap actions actually do

These are separate controls. Enabling double-tap wake does not automatically enable double-tap screen-off, and vice versa.
Motorola: enable double-tap wake and screen-off
Motorola has moved these controls between software releases, so use the path that matches your phone.

Motorola software version 14
- Open Settings.
- Tap Gestures.
- For double-tap wake, tap Jump to lock screen.
- Turn on Use jump to lock screen.
- Return to the gesture settings and open Put display to sleep.
- Turn on that option as well if you want to double-tap to turn the screen off.
With Use jump to lock screen enabled, double-tap a dark or off display to show the fully awake lock screen. With Put display to sleep enabled, double-tap the Home screen or lock screen to turn off the display.
Motorola software version 15, including the moto g35 5G
- Open Settings.
- Tap Home & lock screen.
- Tap Jump to lock screen.
- Enable Use jump to lock screen.
- Go back and tap Put display to sleep.
- Enable the screen-off option.
Motorola also lists Wake display in this area. That setting controls other wake behavior, such as waking the display when you tap it once or move the phone. It is not the same as the two-tap Jump to lock screen gesture.
Motorola phones using Android 16, such as the 2026 moto g
- Open Settings.
- Go to Home & lock screen > Lock screen.
- Tap Jump to lock screen.
- Turn on Use jump to lock screen.
- Return to Home & lock screen > Lock screen.
- Open Put display to sleep and enable it.
Motorola describes this version of double-tap wake as skipping sleep mode and going directly to the awake lock screen. The screen-off gesture works from the Home screen or lock screen and, according to the 2026 moto g guide, also locks the phone from any screen.

Motorola edge: check Home settings if screen-off does not work
Some Motorola edge models use a launcher-specific switch in addition to the main gesture controls. On an edge 30 ultra, try this:

- Go to the Home screen.
- Double-tap an empty area of the Home screen.
- If nothing happens, touch and hold a blank area.
- Tap Home settings.
- Turn on Double tap to turn off screen.
This setting is different from double-tapping an app icon or tapping a gesture-sensitive area. Tap an unused part of the Home screen, away from icons and widgets.
How to find the option on other Android phones
Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Nokia, Oppo, Vivo and other manufacturers may use different names or omit the feature entirely. Android itself does not guarantee a system-wide double-tap-to-turn-off-screen switch.

- Open Settings.
- Tap the search icon or the Search settings box.
- Search for
double tap,tap to wake,screen off,lock screenorgestures. - Check results under Gestures, Lock screen, Home screen, Advanced features or Convenience tools.
- Enable the wake and screen-off options separately if both are available.
If Settings search returns no relevant result, your phone’s software probably does not include the feature. A launcher may provide double-tap-to-lock, but that is a launcher function rather than a standard Android setting.
Google Pixel: what is and is not available
Current Pixel gesture documentation does not provide a general setting for double-tapping the front of the screen to turn it off. Pixel has several similarly named features that are easy to confuse:

Quick Tap is available on supported Pixel phones from the Pixel 4a (5G) generation and later, but it detects taps on the back of the phone—not taps on the display. If you want a reliable Pixel screen-off shortcut, use the power button or a supported launcher/accessibility shortcut instead of assuming Quick Tap controls the screen.

How to test the gesture
- Lock the phone with the power button.
- Wait until the display is completely dark rather than showing an always-on display or sleep screen.
- Double-tap the center of the display with two quick, deliberate taps.
- For the screen-off test, unlock the phone and return to the Home screen.
- Double-tap an empty area, not an icon, widget or notification.
On Motorola, the wake gesture should show the lock screen in its awake state. The screen-off gesture should turn off the display; depending on the model and software, it may lock the device too.
Double-tap is enabled but does nothing
- Check the software path. The setting may have moved after an update. On Motorola, check both Settings > Gestures and Settings > Home & lock screen. On Android 16 Motorola models, also check the Lock screen subsection.
- Confirm both switches. Use jump to lock screen and Put display to sleep are independent settings.
- Tap the correct surface. For screen-off, use a blank area of the Home screen or lock screen. Some launchers only recognize the gesture from the Home screen.
- Use two quick taps. A slow first tap followed by a second tap may be interpreted as two ordinary taps.
- Remove a thick or poorly fitted screen protector. A protector can reduce touch sensitivity, particularly around the edges.
- Check touch sensitivity. If ordinary taps or swipes also fail, restart the phone and test the display without gloves or moisture.
- Test the stock launcher. A third-party launcher can change or remove the Home-screen double-tap action. Temporarily switch to the manufacturer’s default launcher if the screen-off gesture fails.
- Install system updates. Gesture behavior can change after an Android or launcher update, and the manufacturer may fix detection problems in a later release.
Can an app add double-tap-to-lock?
Some third-party launchers and automation tools can add a double-tap action, usually by using an accessibility service or a launcher gesture. Treat these apps carefully: an app with accessibility access may be able to observe or control actions on the screen. Prefer the phone’s built-in setting when it exists, and review the permissions before installing an alternative.
There is no need to use ADB commands for the documented Motorola or Pixel features. The official procedures use Settings toggles, Home settings or the physical power button.

FAQ
Why can I double-tap to wake but not turn off my Android screen?
Wake and screen-off are separate features. Enable the screen-off option independently. On Motorola, look for Put display to sleep; on some edge models, also enable Home settings > Double tap to turn off screen.
Does double-tap-to-wake unlock the phone?
No. On Motorola, Jump to lock screen wakes the display and shows the lock screen. You still need to enter your PIN, pattern, password or use an enabled biometric method.
Is Pixel Quick Tap the same as double-tapping the screen?
No. Pixel Quick Tap detects two taps on the back of the phone. It is configured under Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap and is not a front-screen gesture.
Why is the Motorola setting missing?
Motorola places the control in different locations across releases. Check Settings > Gestures, then Settings > Home & lock screen, including its Lock screen subsection on newer Android 16 models. Your specific model may also not support the feature.

On supported newer Motorola models, the guide says Put display to sleep turns off the display and locks the phone from any screen. On other models, it may only turn off the display or work from the Home and lock screens.
The Bottom Line
For Motorola, enable Use jump to lock screen for double-tap wake and Put display to sleep for double-tap screen-off. Start in Settings > Gestures on software 14, or Settings > Home & lock screen on software 15 and newer. Pixel phones do not offer the same universal front-screen double-tap-to-turn-off control: Tap to check phone and Quick Tap are different features.
