To make rainbow text in an Instagram Story, select your text, hold the selection with one finger, then hold a color swatch with another. Slowly drag both fingers across the text and color spectrum together so different letters take on changing colors. The gesture can take practice, and Instagram’s controls may vary by app version.
Apply a rainbow gradient with the two-finger gesture
- Open Instagram’s Story composer and add a photo or video. You can also use a text-only canvas if that option is available in your app.
- Add the text you want to color.
- Select or highlight the text. Select the whole phrase if you want the color transition to run across it.
- Touch and hold the selected text or its selection handle with one finger. With another finger, press and hold a color swatch in the palette to open or use the color spectrum.
- Slowly move both fingers together across the text and spectrum. As the selection moves through the available colors, the letters can take on a changing gradient. Move at a controlled pace; it may take a few attempts.
- Review the text before sharing the Story.
HubSpot and Sprout Social describe this coordinated gesture, though the exact controls are not guaranteed to look the same across Instagram versions or accounts: HubSpot’s Instagram Story tips and Sprout Social’s Story guide.
Choose between the gradient gesture and manual coloring

Sprout Social says a top-to-bottom movement creates an ombré effect, while moving side to side creates a rainbow. These are practical instructions from a secondary guide, not official current interface documentation.
If the gesture or palette does not behave as expected
- Try moving more slowly while keeping the text selection and color control held at the same time.
- If the selection handles or palette behave differently, update Instagram and try the text-color controls available in your version. The precise gesture is not documented in the official sources cited here.
- Use the manual method of selecting and recoloring small portions if the gesture is difficult. Appllio described this workaround for iPhone and Android in 2019, but its steps may not match today’s interface: Appllio’s Instagram Story text-color guide. That guide advises choosing the font before applying separate colors because changing the font afterward may reset the effect.
Meta Engineering confirms that some Story fonts support “selective colorized text,” allowing different portions of text to use different colors. Its July 18, 2022 article explains the capability, but does not provide a current step-by-step tutorial for the two-finger gesture: Building Text animations for Instagram Stories. A 2026 Kontentino Q&A describes a gradient opened by holding a palette swatch and an eyedropper for sampling colors from a Story image; treat those controls as version-dependent rather than universal: Kontentino’s rainbow-text Q&A.
